Once Upon A Time In Wonderland

This show got so much better, it's a pity but it was doomed the moment ABC put it on Thursdays. The characters in this show were all so amazing, I highly recommend catching up if you're behind.

I am not too saddened. For one, the original idea was to have a short mini series to run on Sundays when OUaT was on hiatus. ABC got greedy and wanted another full show to run on another nite. Two... It didn't have quite the blockbuster beginning ONCE itself did. It took too long to get REALLY interesting, which again may be chalked up to it's original idea being more compressed, so they had to start up with filler stuff before getting to the meat of things. I do hope at least the Knave, Jafar, the Jobawocky and the genie mythology can be transplanted into ONCE in some way.

Aside from some additional episodes not materializing for whatever reason, nothing about the show was changed in terms of what was planned. It was ALWAYS planned to be a single story arc with a defined beginning, middle, and end.

As for the decision to air it on Thursdays in the fall rather than in OUaT's hiatus as was the original plan, ABC execs liked the premise immensely and thought it was strong enough to warrant pairing it with Grey's Anatomy and Scandal, two other series with strong female protagonists.

It's been said that, in hindsight, this was a mistake, but it was a very well-intentioned mistake.

My meaning was that when it went from hiatus place holder to full fledged show, things most likely had to be stretched out, rather than proceed at a faster pace. I know it was originally planned as a series with a start to finish, but when something gets a chance at being a regular season show rather than something finite, decompressing things tends to be the result. Personally, the reveals about Cyrus' brothers and the connection to Jafar are just way more interesting than all the episodes spent on actually searching for Cyrus. Just as the Knave, The Red Queen and Jafar are far more compelling than Alice turned out to be, or the gamble that her and Cyrus' "romance" could keep viewers coming in. Compressed this, getting to the origin of the 3 genies, releasing Jabowocky, the origin of the Red Queen, ect. would have been pretty good tv I guess. Instead the early episodes were all "Oh, where ever is Cyrus... Oh, me daddy didn't believe me... Oh..." which ran thin after 3 episodes.

Which is not to say that I think it was a total waste, or that Alice didn't have potential, or Cyrus either. They just fell flat over time, as did any engagement in their romance. They also waited way to long to not have overt connections and characters to OUaT be in the show. I was great seeing Hershey's Cora again. Would that other characters of a supporting nature had been present. I really was hoping for this to work, as I am sure the producers did too. The idea as it originally conceived works out so well for fans. We would've gotten some interesting side stories about other worlds from the main series and something to tide us all over with during the sometimes long breaks in the season. Cest la vie.

I hope American TV can find something for Mike S. He was such a different character on the BBC BEING HUMAN, that it was great to see him as the lovable Knave here. With the way the last few episodes worked out, here's to hoping he gets back to Storybrooke somehow and hooks up with Ruby. That would be a great inside joke, considering his previous job.

I just want Jafar in Storybrooke damn it. Naveen is just way to awesome as him. To have him only in 13 episodes will just suck. He definitely could rival Regina, Zelina and probably even Rumple.

That is so awesome! Now give us Anastasia as well and we're set!

Literally.

But it seemed pretty final for Alice so don't know if she will ever pop up again in Once. And I am guessing that they kind of sorta maybe wanted to try to foreshadow her daughter adventuring to Wonderland.

Overall it was an ok series, definitely could've been better. It's like the writers knew it was a mini series so they had to make it as loving and romantic as possible.

Bumping the thread to mention something that I figured out thanks to the folks over at Once Podcast.

The present-day OUaTiW events from Down the Rabbit Hole to Heart of the Matter take place in the same amount of time as the Once Upon a Time episode We Are Both, since we see Alice, Cyrus, and the White Rabbit arrive in Storybrooke at 9:25 pm on the same day that the inhabitants of Storybrooke learn that they can't leave the town without losing their real memories and reverting to their Cursed personas.

The reason we know it's the same day is because the hole that they come out of can be seen being repaired early on in the very next OUaT episode, Lady of the Lake.

It was a good story with a beginning, middle, and an end, good for them.

I definitely favored the last half of Once In Wonderland far more than the first half of Once Upon a Time

I definitely favored the last half of Once In Wonderland far more than the first two-thirds of Agents of SHIELD.

Needs to be said. :o

ABC: Here's why 'Once Upon a Time in Wonderland' didn't work out
By James Hibberd on Jul 15, 2014 at 1:37PM

ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee has a theory about why Once Upon a Time in Wonderland didn’t work out. The network executive suggests the Once Upon a Time spin-off was undermined by its time slot. Originally, ABC planned to run the Alice in Wonderland-inspired fantasy series during Once‘s winter hiatus. It ultimately opted to air Wonderland Thursdays at 8 p.m. leading into Grey’s Anatomy instead—which has been a tough hour for the network in recent years, with several shows struggling to gain traction in the slot (particularly up against CBS’ top-rated The Big Bang Theory). This fall, ABC will execute its original plan by running fairy tale musical comedy Galavant in the OUAT “gap.”

“I would have given [Wonderland] a better chance had I done what we’re doing with Galavant and put it in the gap,” Lee told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Beverly Hills on Tuesday. “We wanted to build a night of empowered women, and we were excited about the show, disappointed we didn’t bring an audience to it … I think we should have tried that one in the gap. I think we would have had a better chance with that.”

And Wonderland fizzling out doesn’t hurt the odds of Once getting another spin-off, the executive added.

“[Showrunners Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis] are endlessly inventive,” Lee said. “They have a glimpse in their eyes of stories they’re going to spin for many years to come on Once, and maybe beyond it. It certainly doesn’t rule out their ability or our ability to build on Once. In many ways, Once itself changes every season by bringing on new characters—think of the world of Hook, of Wicked, and now to have teased Frozen. It’s a very exciting way for us to use ABC to really take advantage of some of that—not just for the centuries of fairy tales, but specifically [stories] that come out of the Walt Disney company.”
Once again, no s***. :o

If they think they know what went wrong, why did they cancel it? Why not just move it to the new time slot?

Because either way the ratings were just to horrible to justify a renewal. Plus it was meant to be a "mini series" anyway;

That's really faint praise.

I favour Wonderland as a whole over Agents of Shield as a whole.

I liked Wonderland way more than the second half of OUAT season 3.

I liked Wonderland way more than seasons 2 and 3 of OUAT.

Sure, some things didn't work. But the "self-contained" story was much more enjoyable and the characters were actually permitted to grow and change instead of having their character development reversed a few episodes later in order to "reset" everything again and again.

I liked all three seasons of OUAT and OUATIW. :awesome:

I enjoyed OUATIW but gave up on OUAT about halfway through the first season. The show was on the fence for me, and then they had the episode with the thrilling debate for the sheriff election and I just couldn't take anymore.
