Oprah for president?

Would Oprah Winfrey make a good democratic presidential candidate?

  • No

  • Yes

Results are only viewable after voting.
Why is everyone creating this strawmen scenario? Ive been seeing it all week.

Yes, if it comes down to Trump vs Oprah, I shall bite my tongue and vote frigging Oprah, before leaving the country.

But why should I even entertain such a nightmarish scenario? We should all make sure it never happens. Instead of wishing for it.

Because unfortunately, there's a large contingent of the country that still can't be bothered to vote. I don't know if Oprah (or anyone for that matter) will get them to do it, but it's not unreasonable to think that the only way to energize these people may be to nominate someone who comes from outside of the realm of politics. A big complaint from people who didn't vote (or threw their vote away on a charlatan like Jill Stein) was that they feel Washington is controlled by bureaucrats and they weren't willing to vote for a career politician. So the end result was one of the most qualified presidential candidates in history losing to an unqualified, racist lunatic, when she should have won in a landslide.

Again, I'm not saying Oprah should run. But if the Democrats take a page out of the GOP playbook and get behind someone who isn't a seasoned politician, then they need to find someone who not only has a business record they can tout, but also someone electable. Oprah might be that person.

It feels like the Democrats are screwing up what would be an easy win. This nonsense about Oprah is silly. Please take this election seriously.

The gop didn't get behind Trump they just had no mechanisms to torpedo him, Trump was foisted onto the GOP aparatchiks by a media establishment that propped up his train wreck candidacy for Clinton and ratings

I'm not sure this is something that could be done for Oprah, sure the media can prop her up with a pied piper strategy that starves most rivals of air time and maybe that means she wins the primary but that kind of media bias will not go unnoticed, unchallenged or lead to any kind of meaningful GE unity

but when it comes to the electoral college victory map what does Oprah have to offer to win the rust belt? nothing

Despite the fact that I think she'd get a massive following if she ran... I think there is also a good chance of a harder fall before election night. The reasoning is that Oprah is mightily loved. But if she were to run for political office, the smear machine would kick in as it always does. Every little possibility of scandal will be explored and magnified, and those who are looked at as if saints always fall hardest when scandals are exposed. I'm not saying she has any, but even minor things will be magnified.

It's like if a Priest or Pastor or something has an affair. It's a HUGE scandal that echoes. But if joe schmoe from Brooklyn has an affair, it's not news at all with very little impact. It'd be the same with Oprah. Trump is expected to be a *****ebag so scandals don't have much impact on those who vote for him. But Oprah is looked at as if perfect, and if anything were to come out (true or not) the fall would be much harder. I don't know that she'd be able to survive it. Not to mention a lot of people are getting really tired of the whole Hollywood virtue signaling atmosphere. I think a lot in the middle would skip out on voting as a result or just go with what they know in Trump depending on how his first four years goes.

I think it'd be in her best interests... and she'd be able to have a greater impact on things she cares about... if she were to pass up a White House bid. I have been saying for the past year though that I expect a minority woman to be the candidate though... likely black. Just a gut feeling.

So after watching her Golden Globe speech again, I definitely got chills and saw why people want her to run. She's a very good orator and she knows how to send her message in a positive manner. Do I personally want her to run, no because I want someone more experienced like a Warren or Sanders or Biden. But I will say she wouldn't be the worst choice ever if the DNC hop on the #Oprah2020 bandwagon.

No. Let's not put celebrities in the White House again. I want someone with some government experience.

Obama had about 3 years "government experience" (federal, 7 as state senator which is pretty...traditionally less-than what's seen as 'ready for president' over the 20th century), we didn't give a **** in '08. Why start now?

Devil's advocate, of course. I'm all for running a Biden or some equivalent actual oldschool doddering-old-fart experienced statesman next time, contrast completely with what we have now. Just...yeah, experience is a funny thing, sometimes it matters to people and others they're cool with foregoing it completely.

I'm not American, so I don't know a lot about Oprah but my first question is "How would she stand up to Trump's relentless personal attacks ?" That is Trump's style, he attempts to intimidate his opponents, makes disparaging remarks about them and interrupts them. How would Oprah handle those sort of tactics ?

I'm curious how disparaging he'd get with her though. He's praised Oprah for years. Genuinely likes her. I don't know that I see him mocking her like how he mocks others. Unless she criticizes him first, then it'll probably open a floodgate.

Not my ideal candidate but I'd absolutely vote for her over Trump.

Point out that unlike him she is an actual billionaire.:o Seriously tho that would infuriate him.

Wow...

He wouldn't have much ammo to use which would make for some boring debates. "My opponent is very good at interviewing people."

Hell no.

I also wished we moved on from this bs of all black folks love Oprah stuff online. I can't stand her.

I prefer someone like bald Biden or Kamala Harris.

Oprah for president? You guys have got to be out of your mind.

Just having high name recognition (let alone if it's mostly positive) is a huge advantage, let alone also being able to self-fund.

not a good look. I'm sure she's not interested, first and foremost.

beyond that, she's better off as a financier, and a backer of movements/campaigns.

In the long run, with her business interests (including media ownership), that's a better empowerment vehicle for the public at large.

systemic change is what is needed. A celebrity-- even a well-meaning one-- is not going to deliver it.
