I've been thinking that, witha series that's constantly building up to something, I doubt that they're just going to leave the explanation of the very sudden influx of super powers at just mutations. I mean, I could buy that if there were far fewer heroes, and if their powers were unrelated in origin, but having so many in such close proximity and having all of them share the same genetic trait suggets to me that that the cause will be a big reveal later on. Personally, I suspect that the answer will be similar to the Century Babies of Wildstorm. As in, the Heroes act as humanity's immune sistem, and on the case of the show come back in big waves every few millenia. Sort of similar to the idea that shamanism is built into our genetic structure as a means of having protectors of the collective people, albiet sci-fied out to the extreme.

I think they'll explain it via evolution. In the first episode or one of the first, Mohinder says something about the evolution proces not being fair and such. And they've been talking about evolution troughout the entire series.
I don't think they're in such close proximity either. I believe they are really trying to make it this seem like worldwide event. They've got people from India, Japan, Haiti and from all different city's in the U.S. It's their destiny that brings them all together.

But that's what I'm talking about right there. A genetic trait like the identical gene sequence that gives them their powers getting passed to so many unrelated people isn't quite how evolution works. Were this truely a matter of evolution, and they all got their powers from the same gene sequence, then this would only be happening in one family line. I think, from a storytelling standpoint, there's alot more to it than simply evolution, and it somehow ties into their colective detsiny. Like I said, I think it will end up being a suped up version of the shaman theory I mentioned. That they're the human race's equivalent of an immune system.
