Our School Board Decides to Cut All Jr. High School Sports

Not necessarily. I knew a lot of kids when I was in school (and still see this today with my nieces and nephews) who get involved in sports and music because the other kids are doing it. There's a peer pressure factor involved. Yes, parents should encourage their kids to get out and do things and to try new activities, but having those options available at school can help with that in a very big way.

Wow, we agree on something! :o

I guess at the end of the day, parents and schools have to work together. Plain and simple.

Yeah I agree, but with kids, at least in my opinion, it usually boils down to lids wants do what they want do, and usually they want be cool. So I don't think forcing a kid is neccessarially the best way to get a kid to do something or they'll just figure out ways of not doing something. Show middle school class a Jimi Hendrix concert and then provide them wiht the means of learning guitar, I'm pretty sure at least a couple will take up the offer. As for sports, you got be kidding me? I mean I suck at sports and I'm way out of shape, but I still enjoy playing catch, b-ball, etc... If you make things look enticing kids will bite, most of the time... They just have to be given the choice, kids like adults don't like being told what to do or be treated like children.

Why does she keep calling him a dick?

No, it should be the kids who decide. And that is the way it was here. But now they have no choice. It is unfortunate.

Of course they have a choice. There's nothing stopping them from going outside and tossing a ball around, or starting up a game of baseball, or even just going for a walk.

Good point, but that doesn't mean schools should cancel sport teams. Its like saying, "hey a kid can just pick up a guitar at home and teach themselves how to play the instrument." I think kids, especially in middle and high school, need the proper training and experience if they are interested enough in a particular sport.

You know how many kids actually become professional sports players just because they played in high school? Not many. In school, you get into sports for excercise and fun (at least, that should be why you do that). You can get that from grapping a termite ridden bat from your garage and going into an empty feild with some friends. And really, I find that to be much more fun, since it's less strict. Now, I'm not saying that it's a good thing that they cut sports. Just that it's not that big a loss.

Also, I know a couple of people who did simply pick up a guitar and teach themselves how to play.

eh, i was always to poor to get into sports or play any instruments:(

i always wanted to learn piano, but my mom could never afford it, at this time in my life i can care less about it now. and i always had trouble reading music notes.:(

What's this? After school programs are getting cut?

Buy a knife. The gangs are forming.

You don't learn discipline, teammwork and how to deal with competition, loss and failure by just grabbing a bat and hitting the ball around with your buddies. All of these things come with playing sports in a competitive manner, which in my eyes is very important for kids and their growth.

It's sad to see team sports taken from high school, though if there is not enough interest it's hard to justify the cost of it, there are teams and compeition outside of school for these things.

so what?
what's the big deal about sports? why do people act like the friday high school football game is a life and death situation? sports are stupid

if kids want to go and PLAY they can anytime right?

Only people who are not good at sports say that

I was always involved in organized sports of some kind throughout middle and high school, whether through the school or my town's recreation leagues. Also played pick up games with friends all the time, we all had either a Nintendo or Sega system, but more often than not we'd rather play football or baseball than video games. Then again my parents wouldn't let me play video games during the week, so that probably helped me to not get too "addicted" to them.

While I the artistic kid and never the "athletic" type, I still went out for sports when I was in Jr. High and High School. Gave me a chance to hang out with friends, make new ones and keep in shape all while being far far away from chores. :o

I'd have had a week-long party if my school had cut sports. I spent every damn sports session hiding in a bathroom or an empty classroom until it was over I hated them that damn much.

Oddly enough, I did two hours of martial arts three times a week after school, so I got the benefit of the excersise without the public humiliation. Sports wasn't about excersise in school. It was about being popular and laughing at everyone else.

What kinda martial arts do you do?

Ju Jutsu. I was good too. They put me in the adult class when I was 12 because they said I had too much focus and was being wasted training with the kids. The kids mostly just pissed about, and were scared of me because I was good at it.

Dad taught me a fair bit of judo when I was really young though, so I think that helped.

Sweet deal... My father and I have been looking into Jiu Jitsu as of late, especially since my ground fighting skills kinda suck, and he wants to re-learn all his Judo stuff from when he was a kid.

I was kinda in the same situation as you, except I was 13, and they mainly wanted to upgrade me to the adult class because I was so much bigger than everyone in my level. Then I joined a youth class after I moved and got my ass handed to me :-p.
