The Hollywood Reporter says Ridley Scott and Leonardo DiCaprio will reteam for a dark thriller titled "The Low Dweller" that Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media has bought after a heated bidding war.

Scott and DiCaprio will produce the film, with DiCaprio attached to star and Scott eyeing to direct. The project is a spec from first-time writer Brad Ingelsby, who works as an insurance salesman in Pennsylvania.

Ingelsby had been working on the script in his spare time and has yet to step foot in Hollywood. But he has hit the spec jackpot, with the project selling for $650,000 against $1.1 million.

Set in Indiana in the mid-1980s, the movie centers on a man (DiCaprio) trying to assimilate into society after he's released from jail, only to find someone from his past pursuing him to settle a score. In addition to the pursuer, a third male character and a female love interest are said to figure prominently in the script.

The movie would be the second for DiCaprio and Scott. They just wrapped the geopolitical thriller Body of Lies for Warner Bros. DiCaprio next reteams with Martin Scorsese for period thriller Shutter Island this spring. Scott is prepping Nottingham, the Robin Hood romance with Imagine/Universal.

This one came out of the blue, wonder if this means DiCaprio wont be doing The Chaser, i hope not but i'd definitely count him out of Akira.

The story for this sounds great and more Leo/Ridley team ups is awesome news, even though we are yet to see Body of Lies.

Im liking the sound of it.....I'd rather him do this then Akira. Both seem to have a full plate.

Leo is picking one great sounding project after another right now, I hope he does this and The Chaser. The guy that sold the spec he wrote in his spare time for $650,000 is living the dream. :D

Imagine making $650,000.00 in your spare time...

I'm guessing he'll be giving up the day job to concentrate on writing now. :woot:

A bit more detailed.

Ridley Scott and Leonardo DiCaprio will reteam for a dark thriller titled "The Low Dweller" that Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media has bought after a heated bidding war.

Scott and DiCaprio will produce the film, with DiCaprio attached to star and Scott eyeing to direct. The project has echoes of "The History of Violence" and "No Country for Old Men," is a spec from first-time writer Brad Ingelsby, a twentysomething working as an insurance salesman in Pennsylvania.

Ingelsby had been working on the script in his spare time and has yet to step foot in Hollywood. But he has hit the spec jackpot, with the project selling for $650,000 against $1.1 million.

The spec piqued bidders across town, including Warners and Sony, who stayed in the bidding for some time before Relativity came away the winner late Wednesday night. The movie is thought to have a prestige bent a la "No Country," and those familiar with the project say they could see it being distributed by a studio or a specialty division.

Relativity, which is financing and producing the project, could package and make the movie itself or try to set it up at a studio. Ryan Kavanaugh's outfit, one of a select few entities that could compete with studios on higher-profile projects like this, counts Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" and Steve Zahn-starrer "A Perfect Getaway" among its current projects.

"Dweller" will be produced by Scott's Scott Free Prods. and DiCaprio's Appian Way as well as Ingelsby manager Brooklyn Weaver. Michael Ireland at Appian Way brought the project to the shingle.

The movie would be the second for DiCaprio and Scott. They just wrapped the geopolitical thriller "Body of Lies" for Warners. DiCaprio next reteams with another A-list director when he begins shooting Martin Scorsese's period thriller "Shutter Island" this spring. Scott is prepping "Nottingham," the Robin Hood romance with Imagine/Universal.

The project is one of the first big spec sales after the writers strike, though given Ingelsby's frosh status, he wouldn't have been affected by the labor stoppage.

I think we need a trailer for Body of Lies. I believe that would be DiCaprio's first team up with Crowe and Scott.

Some interestring new details.

http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/861/861427p1.html

DiCaprio would play Slim, a man released from prison after serving a murder sentence who wants to follow through on his promise to marry his long-suffering girlfriend. Things get complicated, however, when the man learns that his brother has been murdered after becoming involved in a gambling racket, and he is driven to avenge his death.

Variety reminds us that DiCaprio and Scott both have pretty full schedules, but the film may only take around a month to shoot, which might make it easy to squeeze in. The pair just worked together on Warner Bros.' Body of Lies.

Nice combination....the scipt review sounds strong....sounds like Leo will thrive in this role

It sounds very promising from the review, great role for Leo and some great character parts, the setting should also give Ridley a great landscape to shoot on. i don't get the 2010 release date for it given it will be shot in 35 days this summer.

Kind of confused me as well...he does have alot of movie scheduled for release though, Revolutionary Road(2008), Body of Lies(2008) and Shutter Island(2009). Maybe they want to spread them out to avoid overexposure like that one year Jude Law had like 10 movies out.:yay: Seriously though they could easily drop it in 2009 I would think.

They do say the screenplay is strong. I'm just excited. The end is dark and mysterious, and questionable.

That seems to fit in with both their upcoming slates perfectly.

Sanders in Talks to Direct Low Dweller
Source: The Hollywood Reporter July 7, 2009

The Hollywood Reporter says that up-and-coming director Rupert Sanders is in negotiations to direct The Low Dweller, the dark ex-con drama that Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way and Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions are producing for Relativity Media.

The commercials director is also attached to The Wild Geese, an action epic that 300 producer Gianni Nunnari is producing at Warner Bros.

Brad Ingelsby script for "Low Dweller" centers on a Midwestern man who gets out of prison only to be haunted and pursued by a figure from his past.

Bale is back after dropping off. Thread title change?

Christian Bale to Star in Revenge Drama 'Out of the Furnace' (Exclusive)
"Crazy Heart" director Scott Cooper is helming the project formerly known as "The Low Dweller"; Bale rejoins after dropping out last year.

Christian Bale is in talks to star in the revenge drama project, which was once known as The Low Dweller and is being directed by Crazy Heart helmer Scott Cooper. Relativity is behind the project.

Furnace was a hot spec by Brad Ingelsby when it hit the town in 2008. It centers on a man released after serving four years in prison. His hopes for a peaceful homecoming are thwarted when he sets out to find the man who brutally murdered his younger brother to avenge his death.

The project immediately attracted top directors such as Rupert Sanders and Ridley Scott as well as such actors as Mark Wahlberg. (Scott is now a producer on Furnace, via his banner Scott Free. Appian Way, the company run by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jenifer Davisson Killoran, also is producing.)

The project almost came together with Bale and Sanders last year but Bale dropped out due to scheduling reasons.

The intent is for Robert Duvall, who appeared in Cooper’s Crazy Heart, to join the Furnace case, although no deals have been made.

The plan now is for Bale, repped by WME, to tackle the movie in the spring, before moving on to his press commitments for summer's sure-thing blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises and shooting Terrence Malick's drama Knight of Cups.

I kinda prefer the old title because it's kinda weird.

This seems like a cool smaller project for Bale to tackle.

He's going to have a whole lot to do this year. This, TDKR promos, Knight of Cups and then Lawless.

I love that the first thing that came to my mind when I saw that Duvall was circling was "Newsies Reunion!". :hehe:

More info from Variety:

VIGGO FOR THE VILLAIN PLEASE! :awesome:

Christian Bale jumps in 'Out of the Furnace'
Also circling: Mortensen, Affleck, Hedlund, Kitsch, Tatum

By VARIETY STAFF

Christian Bale has finally found his follow-up to "The Dark Knight Rises," as he's in talks to star in Relativity Media's "Out of the Furnace," which is heating up with "Crazy Heart" helmer Scott Cooper writing and directing.
Pic is one of the five projects Variety first reported Bale was circling, as Variety first reported August 24.

"Furnace" is based on Brad Ingelsby's story "The Low Dweller," and is envisioned as a gritty throwback to pics of the 1970's. Plot follows an ex-con bent on avenging the death of his younger brother as soon as he's released from prison.

Cooper is targeting Viggo Mortensen to play the villain, while Casey Affleck, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch and Channing Tatum are among the actors circling the part of Bale's brother. Robert Duvall, who is related to Cooper, has long been rumored to play the protag's uncle, who helps him on his quest for vengeance.

It's no surprise that so many top actors have expressed interest in the project, considering its high pedigree; In addition to Relativity, producers include Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way and Ridley and Tony Scott's banner Scott Free, as well as Energy Entertainment.

Relativity cautions that no deals are in place and that additional casting will depend on whether Bale signs on to the project. Thesp was offered the lead role last summer but it was unclear whether he'd be available, as he planned on doing two Terrence Malick films back-to-back. Current plan calls for Bale to shoot the first Malick film until the end of May and have him jump into "Furnace" sometime in June before filming the second Malick project in September.

Bale is repped by WME.
