I've heard such mixed things about this both from friends and the critics, but I think I have to see it for myself either way. I'm always down for a good Bale performance.

I thought the movie was pretty good, though disappointing. The film does look great and the acting is phenomenal with the stand out for me being Woody Harrelson.

I liked it, it was not amazing...But you can tell the cast here is bonafide A+.

Dafoe, Affleck, Bale, Harrelson, the uncle...This whole cast was terrific....Only one that was sort of bad was Forrest Whitaker. He sounded like Bale's Batman.

The ending could have been worked out better...The transitioning I mean. I think they screen-tested this or something, because there is a quick scene in the end which feels forced.

I saw it last night. Super depressing and nothing really redeeming. But I liked it:) The acting was top notch. Just outstanding performances all around. I grew up in that part of pennsylvania and it made me not miss and miss it at the same time:) This movie is not for everyone and never will be. But even if someone doesnt like the the tone of the movie they cant possibly not like the performances.

for the most part, i really liked the movie. great performances from Bale, Affleck, and Harrelson especially. though there were parts that dragged a little too much. also, the movie was kind of depressing.

what's everyone's take on the ending?

after Bale's character kills Harrelson, it just sort of fades to the next scene which is Bale sitting in some room by himself. isolation?

Growing up close in the region this story takes place, the accuracy of the characters is spot on. Everything from speech, to wardrobe, to homes, all of it was nailed.

It was a strange ending,
I would have preferred it fade to black after Bale shoots Woody, leaving it up to the viewer whether Bale gets shot in turn by Whitaker, is sent to jail, or is let go. The way I interpreted the final shot is that Whitaker let him go, and he's completely lonely and left with nothing now.

Saw the movie yesterday and I really enjoyed it. It was a slow burn revenge flick with a solid cast.

Seen it tonight. Was a pretty great film, in my opinion. A solid 8/10. Loved the performances. Loved the ending.

For some reason, I thought Rodney was going to show up at the end.

Kinda crazy that a lot of reviewers have called this now Bale's best performance and yet he'll get more recognition with American Hustle. :funny:

I thought it was great.

I cant think of a movie I enjoyed more this year.

Scott Cooper explained the ending here - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/...ding_n_4365572.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000003

It's what all here assumed it meant.

Interesting, I just saw it tonight with a friend of mine and the whole
Godfather part II ending
totally went over my head.

I found it kind of too slow at parts, but was on the edge of my seat for most of the film. The cast was phenomenal though. Last film I saw that made me feel this depressed was Requiem for a dream, lol.

I just came back from seeing it and I really enjoyed it for what the story was they were trying to tell.

I understand a lot of people not really getting into it, but as a person who has lived through many struggles and been in some bad places, living in a small town like that when I was younger all of these people felt like truly real people. As I watched this I feel like I knew someone just like each and every character, all of the performances were insanely well done. As a pretty big Bale fan I can say this is definitely in his top three performances for me ( American Hustle may change that) but he portrayed a real living breathing working man much like he never has before and I could feel every emotion he felt. I also very much enjoyed Woody Harrelson as one of the most brutal villains I've seen in a long time, definitely one of my favorite performances of his, cold, ruthless, brutal and real I really cannot stress the realistic nature of the film itself enough.

Overall I give the film an 8/10

That's a bit how I felt too.

I've been around a lot of people like this and I've even taken some similar steps. It was quite frightening to watch on the big screen because it brought back personal memories.

One of the most realistic films I've ever seen. I loved it. 9/10

The whole cast was good but Woody Harrelson and Christian Bale in particular were great in this film.

Harrelson was the most menacing I've seen him in a while and Bale gave a great understated performance. It is a testament to Bale's acting that he can convincingly play crazy rich guys (Batman, American Psycho, Shaft), do Shakespeare (Henry the 5th, A Midsummer Night's Dream) as well as working class guys in a down and out towns (this film, The Machinist, The Fighter, 3:10 To Yuma).

The only thing I didn't like was the music.

Saw this one tonight, loved it. Solid performances from Woody and Christian in particular. Casey did awesome. Very moving and just real. I loved seeing Bale playing a character like this one, and that bridge scene alone had me in tears. Probably my favorite bit of acting from him since The Prestige. A solid 8.5/10.

I was sort of perplexed that this film went so under the radar. I didn't think it was anything exceptional, but I thought it was all around a really solid film that didn't deserve to disappear so fast.

Yeah, it's a real shame. Christian, Woody and Casey alone deserve ton of praise for this. Very solid performances all around, imo.

It baffles me that Bale got all his noms this year for American Hustle and not this.

Bale completely knocks it out of the park. His scene with Zoe Saldana , i sincerely don't remember the last time i had a tear in my eye watching a scene like that. He creates the whole thing out of thin air. He has only one interaction with her previously.

Just a masterful performance , in a role that most people wouldn't find any juice to squeeze.

The ingrown hillbillies devilish force is very much disconnected with the organic of the rest of the movie . The big problem of the film ends up being the plot that moves the events forward.

I loved the ending.

It was so incredibly ignored during awards season, I think it's too dark & bleak and maybe why it didn't register as much as it should have.

I saw it twice, and I really think it's an exceptional movie.
