Over The Edge

Whoa Darthphere, calm down man, there's no need to go Bill O' Reilly on anybody, we're havin a friendly discussion. To answer your question, I've been reading marvel comics since '82, so yea i know what they were like back then. OF COURSE, there were those mature comics, Vertigo, Daredevil etc. but the majority of Marvel Comics at least was a lot more lighter toned than they are today. thats all i'm saying and all memphis slim is saying. Comics reflect the times, back in the 80's televesion and movies were a lot more innocent therefore the comics refelcted that. But now we live in the times of 24, The Shield, HBO, MTV, BET, everthing nowadays is a lot more raunchier and violent, therefore the comics reflect that to keep up with the times. I thinkt the initial point of this thread was to show that its just a little weird to see all the marvel heroes cursing so much when they barely used to curse at all in the 70's, 80's and most of the 90's. Thats all

But that's my point, comics, tv and movies were not as innocent as you guys want them to be so badly. I mean, DD had someone stabbed through the chest hanging in mid-air, then you had all those pretty dark Spidey stories, Venom debuted in the late eighties, X-Men were going crazy with half naked chicks and storylines that were damn dark. Not to mention God Loves, Man Kills. So you see, you guys are trying to create this utopia where the comics of the eighties were all ho hum and gee golly, when they clearly were not.

I mean, are you guys seriously going to make the argument that &^*&^^ is a lot more dangerous to little kids than people being killed, stabbed, maimed, etc. Because all of that happened from the beginning in comics, I mean even Superman and Batman would kill cats when they first started out.

I was just looking thru "Mighty Avengers", at the book shop. I just had a weird feeling about the state of comics today.

Gratuitous sex (I mean did Ultron have to be presented butt naked? ) and what is up with the language????

I mean every other word ballon had "!*&%#@!!" in it. Now granted that stop short of putting curse words in. But your brain can't help but fill in the blanks. And why do this?? Are they trying to make 616 into an Ultimates universe?? Do they think profane things is some symbol of being "more adult"???

Man...I couldn't buy the book. I can't leave that laying around for my kids to pick up and look thru it. Some of this stuff is becoming soft porn! :csad:

I actually have that issue where the female Ultron was naked, and none of the Avengers seemed to mind. That was a bit much, but i could guess this is all from the 80`s and 90`s when society and comics all went down the drain.

Sad to say,im glad you would not let your kids see that. Its not right for them, instead get them Marvel Adventures. But its also good that you notice this, its better you then them.

"Oh my god! A naked robot! I'm traumatized!"

i dont see anything wrong with them curseing.the nudity...well ultron never wore clothes either.

My virgin eyes!

ummm sex appeal in comics is nothing short of new... hell... women in comics always use to have the BIGGEST boobs ever... even sue storm has been given unmotherly globes. If anything, women are less over sexualised now.. the at least now all don't look like Pamela Anderson... plus sex sells, and it's a known fact that more guys read comics then women, also comics these days arn't geered for kids like the silver age was. Kids have there own section of marvel comics... "spider-man loves mary jane, avengers adventures, spider-man adventures... etc... "

as for cursing... A) people are alot more desensatized.. and it's viewed more as "ok" by public and the language is written as real people talk. and B) like i said, more teens and up read comics now more then ever, theres a larger older audience

omg, he doesnt have enough clothes on! and look at that BULDGE! quick give him a winter jacket and pants! he's overly sexualized

The only thing people should be upset about is a female Ultron in the first place. He's such a great design. No need for generizing. Sigh.

i like the female ultron... and it's not really "ultron" persay, he seems to have created and programed some sort of virus...which would explain how it got into the armor, as well as the shield hellicarrier

1). It's all in jest.
2). I have the hope that it'll be a dying trend. It's moving away much too slowly, but like you said, it is decreasing.

For you to talk about class is ludicrous. All I need to do is point people in the direction of your posts on the Community Board.

Secondly, I never said anything about your upbringing. I refered to my upbringing. That was the straw the broke the camel's for me. I tried to be nice, and you didn't have the decency to read what I had to say. It's impossible to have a discussion with people like you. You're so busy trying to dissect people's words and look for ways you can "cleverly" jab back, that you fail to even comprehend simple text.

If that was your attempt at being nice, you need more practice. What a joke. Advice: Next time you try to be nice to someone

1. Don't call his political view a "problem".
2. Don't assume he has problems with his upbringing.

You're a piece of work.

Who is this person who's upbringing I am refering to? Are you dense? This is the third time: I was referencing my own childhood.

Personally man....I think you're the only one that "wants" to understand my points. Darth and PhotoJones have it in for "anything" I bring up. Legit or not.

Your point is great. There were "some" books that had dark tone. But books like The Avengers?? Come on.

I just think we can do better. That's all.....what's wrong with that? Why would this bring out such anger in some these people??

Did you just admit that some of the stuff you post is not legit? Because if you did, I think you might have taken your first step to recovery. Congrats, Celldog.

Photojones Wrote: Your argument is pretty weak, but I can sort of see where you're coming from. The problem is that I know that you're a ultra conservative. And I grew up in a house like that, so I know you guys are scared to death of pee pee parts. I realize you'll grow out of that, but I thought perhaps I could give you my point of view as well.

You clearly made reference me and my family!! Now either you are a high school drop out or you just have a bad memory. Sure...you briefly mention yourself. But you project all of that crap onto my family! Good grief dude....who are the "you guys" and the "you will grow out of it" if you're not talking about us??? Don't punk out now.

Sorry you had rough upbringing dude. That explains a lot of what I read from you.

The only problem I have is that, if Ultron hates humans so much, I don't really understand why he/she/it would want to look more like them for anything but espionoge purposes.

Oh you mean the Avengers where Hank Pym slapped Janet, and went through a nervous breakdown. Yeah, that book wasn't dark at all. Or the Korvac Saga, Ultron, the lead up to War on Olympus. Yeah, there was nothing dark about that, at all.:whatever: :whatever: :whatever:

Same reason why bull dykes hate men but look just like them?

Did you have a problem with this Slim?

Circa 1977.

Oh look, naked female robots and naked women. Oh noes!!111:o

Man, this is really getting outta hand. The point that you guys are trying to make is that comics have always been this violent and gratuitous. Come on! Everything is so much more violent and raunchier nowadays. the 70's and 80's were all about fun adventures. Secret War. That was a fun adventure. Civil War? well that speaks for itself. You cant compare the violence nowadays to the violence back then. Yes I definitly agree there were some exceptions, there were books that pushed the limit, but they were very few back then. Now almost every marvel 616 book is trying to become this ultra realistic mirror of the real world. hmm, i thought thats what the Ultimate line was for...

Listen, i personally am not complaining about any of it but like memphis slim, its a lil shocking to still see these heroes act this way. Captain America is waaay more intense then he was back in the 80's, Luke cage is an excellent example of a modern revamp, and now even Spiderman is breaking bones right and left. Marvel was all fun back in the 80's now its been revamped into this gritty version of the real world.

So come one guys give Slim a break, I think you guys blew his argument way outta proportion.

So come one guys give Slim a break, I think you guys blew his argument way outta proportion.

Nah, he did that himself, when he turned what could be seen as a small problem and made it a major issue.

The things Slim is saying now are the same thing people said in the sixties, seventies, eighties and 90's about previous comic book eras. Things change, it's time to get with those times.:whatever:

This is what I said:

The "never" is bolded because I mean to type that in the first place. Still, it doesn't change anything.

You clearly made reference me and my family!! Now either you are a high school drop out or you just have a bad memory. Sure...you briefly mention yourself. Sorry you had rough upbringing dude. That explains a lot of what I read from you.

First of all, I didn't have a rough upbringing. Once again, that's something you said. My childhood was normal. I just disagree with my parent's politcal beliefs.

Now, what I said, Celldog is that I know how ultra conservatives think because I grew up in a household like that. I didn't say you did. I said I did. See how that reads? It doesn't matter if your parents were the Kennedy's. You are, right now, as an adult, an admitted ultra conservative. And because I've lived with people who think just like you, I know where you're coming from, and what your values are. Do I need to break out the sock puppets to explain this further?

I'm not "punking out". I'm explaining for the fourth time, something that a 10 year would be able to read and comprehend, yet you are unable to. At first, Celldog, I thought you were a guy of average intelligence; just someone who's views I disagreed with. Now I am seriously begining to wonder if there's something wrong with you. Joking aside, you've got some serious problems with basic logic and understanding. If you need help, get it.

Oh and Darth, stop posting pictures of naked robots. There could be children lurking around.
