I just watched Batman Returns again, and while I love it, there's this one thing that always bothers me. After the clown steals the mayor's baby, he hands him to Penguin, who gets on his giant duck and rises out of the sewer. I don't know why, but I just can't accept this. I'm fine with Selina Kyle surviving a fall from a skyscraper, I have no problem with near-slapstick fights with a clown gang, or any of the other fairly ridiculous (but oh-so-fun) moments in the film. I just hate this. There's two things that bother me about it. One, when he rises up, his feet come up to be just below the man hole opening. But wait, he was on the duck's back. Wouldn't the duck's head have busted through the pavement? Second, wouldn't the good people of Gotham find it a tad staged that he just glides right up out of the sewer? I think it would have served the same dramatic purpose to have him struggle to get his bulky form up the ladder (you know, those built-in manhole ones?) while holding the mayor's baby than to just.... glide. May have even made him more sympathetic to the audience. I realize it's just a small moment in the film, and it's not enough to ruin the whole movie for me, I was just wondering if it bothered anyone else.
