I go to the movies often, and have done so for years.

I have never, ever experienced the kind of thing those guys are talking about in that IMDB thread.

What kind of idiot tries to be witty by shouting something out during the movie??

Wait, actually, I lie. I did experiene something similar. During Silent Hill, there was a group of kids yelling random crap. Remember the scene where the nun says goodnight to the girls? One of the kids in the cinema yelled "DON'T HAVE SEX!!". Towards the end of the film, my friend threw a bottle of water at them.

I don't care if the movie is supposed to be fun. You don't yell **** at the screen!! That's retarted!!!

Discuss.

I live in Europe and I have NEVER experienced anything in a movie theatre like some of the stuff I read about on the internet...

I doubt there's a majority of moviegoers that actually DO this kinda thing, but then I also find it incredible that it could even happen occasionally...

Say, Spider-Man beats the villain, do people really jump up and go: "YEAH! Kick his ASS, Spidey!! Whooo!!"? Or applaud when Batman first appears on-screen? Or yell dumb jokes during a romantic scene??

Here, people just sit down and shut the hell up during the movie. If someone starts talking during the film, he'll get shushed. At most, there's applause at the end, when the credits start to roll, but that's not too common either... I could totally live with that though, but not the hooting and jeering that's aparantly pretty normal practice in the US...

I dunno, maybe what we do is boring and what people do in America is exuberant, but I really enjoy the utter silence in a movie theatre, apart from the film. The most important aspect of going to see a film in the cinema for me is the total immersion in the diegesis. It's dark, it's quiet, the only thing to focus on is the film. If some jackass disturbs that, it really ruins the experience for me...

Yeah its an American thing... Pull that stuff in Australia and you will get kicked out for being an annoying jerk.

I was pissed off during the watching of The Omen'06.

It was terrible, 2 kids were sitting and commenting on every scene in the movie making stupid jokes.

Well, in the middle of the movie, I lost control and said one of them to shut their f-ing mouths up or I will kill them :D

In Italy they used to do it in the 70s in the summer arenas, when they had rerelease of old movies. Or they use to do it here in Rome at the Fantafestival, where there's a sort of contest for the wittiest remarks to the usually ****ty movie they screen. You can tell a movie is good when they stop yelling.

I've learned to just see matinees. All the idiots seem to go to the movies in the evening, while matinee audiences are generally older and go to the theatre to actually see a movie. Teenagers think theatres are a social meeting place. I hate teenagers, although not all of the idiots are teenagers, but most of them are.

It depends, if the movie is OK, no talking... there were some talking during Van Helsing and The Village.

But you never know, there might be someone in the theatre enjoying the movie and even if it's only one person, that doesn't give the people who are disliking the movie the right to shout and be glib about it... Besides, it doesn't help if you're trying to get into a movie and some jerk is ragging on it to his friends...

I feel, if you wanna go bananas, rent some $h!tty popcorn movie with some friends, get some beers and nachos and loudly trash the movie in the privacy of your own home... :o

That's how I saw Catwoman, Fantastic Four, Van Helsing, Alien vs Predator... FUN!!

Here in Brazil, the most annoying moviegoers are usually kids and teenagers who keep laughing and trying to make fun of everything trying to pose as "too cool for school" but being only obnoxious.

I remember audience reactions to

Episode 2 - Yoda kicking ass for the first time

Episode 3 - Yoda again

Superman Returns - Few things here & there :o

only happened to me once: a kid started to scream ''yeeha'' and **** during spiderman 2 but his father (And many other people) got so annoyed at him after an hour , he took him by the arm and said shut up! and walked out of there, dragging the kid out from the theater... :D

Trivia: in sweden we have assigned seating :P or whatever its called

I saw Superman Returns in a packed English cinema, and there was one guy trying to create an American atmosphere by cheering and yelling whenever Supes appeared. Nobody joined in, lol. Thing is, I can appreciate his feeling because seeing Superman in the cinema, with the stirring music booming out, does make you feel like cheering.

Wooping and rolaring is dumb i think, hell ive never even heard anyone clapping at the end of the film dont see the point in it.

Well, you have a point in that there's no one to recieve the applause, so it's pretty pointless, but that's in fact the one thing I can live with. It's not something I'd instigate, but when the credits roll and people clap, I'll join in.

Maybe it has something to do with discharging some of the emotion experienced during the film, that wasn't shown cause everyone was sitting on their hands all the way through it. I mean, I admit it can be hard to keep still during a movie if it really grabs you, but I also enjoy the visceral thrill of just being in quiet awe of the scene in front of you.

My father tells me that when he was young, people always applauded a film when it was done, sort of a tradition carried over from live theatre... Just as a sign of admiration for the movie. I can relate to that.

Yeah that attitude is international.

Yeah but clapping at live actors is a music, Movies are bits of cellulde on a reel that sipn around and around for weeks, i mean if an actor of the film or the director is in the room so be it.

Normaly i will watch it get up and go out side then talk about the film, not stand there clapping or going "Woah batmans kicking some asss now!" in the middle of the showing i find it rude.

not just America, Canada too.
Although this is usually something that happens only during opening weekend when the die hard fans are out. If you wait a couple of weeks and hit the the movies come weekend you'll likely not deal with a rowdy audience.
Snakes on a Plane last night had three sold out shows and for all of them the Audience danced around, hissed at each other and pretty much acted as if the worlds biggest dj just threw down the best set of his life at one mighty rave.

I love it. I think it's the only way to experience a film. If I want total silence I stay at home and watch the DVD. If I go out into public I want audience reaction.
I freaked out with 400 people when Bale first appeared onscreen in costume. I yelled at Tobey Maguire when he beat the snot out of Doc Ock.

I'm one of those people. I love it.

Yeah, but like I said, I think it has more to do with showing how you felt about the film towards the social group you're in at the moment (i.e. the other moviegoers) than actually congratulating the makers.

There are soooo many aspects of human behaviour that are carried out without a clear purpose, but which still signify something, even if the direct link to what it once literally signified is lost. Thus, clapping in a movie theatre can carry over a social ritual from the stage theatre, even if it's divorced from its original meaning (congratulating the entertainers)...

Clapping or cheering in the middle of the film, IS rude, no question. But at the end, I can see why people might. I always stay until the end of the credits, unlike most people. Then I discuss the movie with my friends. If anyone wants to clap during the credits, fine by me...

I find it funny sometimes and not really annoying. When I saw X3 more than half the audience was saying "I'm the Juggernaut *****" as soon as he first appeared. In POTC2 the whole movie theatre clapped and cheered the first time Jack Sparrow showed up. And of course the applauding at the end. I don't mind it and usually join in

No i go out to get the surround sound and full force of the movie of how it was ment to be viewed not on my poxy tv at home

The only time I'v seen it happen is a Snakes On A Plane trailer came on and some people started yellin "yeah! Snakes On A Plane!"

The only time I've experienced anything like that was at a daytime screening of The Two Towers.

There were a bunch of teenagers who hollered at every Uruk Hai Legolas slayed and laughed out loud at every stupid wisecrack Gimli made. It bothered me, but luckily they were sitting relatively far away or otherwise I wouldn't have been able to enjoy the film at all.

I think a film in the theatre should be watched in silence. I do like it when a spontaneous gasp goes through the theatre when there's something like a cool reveal or a boo-scare. Spontaneous oohs and aahs are one thing, but I would hate it if people shouted things at the screen and for that I thank my lucky stars I don't have to watch films in America.

You do realise that you are the reason that so many people these days decide to stay away from the cinema. No disrespect to you. But it's quite ****ing distracting just to have people talk during the film, never mind people whooping and cheering during the film. It's really ****ing rude. I'm the opposite - if I wanted to talk during a movie and do running commentary with friends, I do it at home on DVD. It's just common sense. Most people feel the same. What age are you, just out of interest.

I don't mind clapping when the credits roll. I don't mind laughter at the jokes. But commentary?? People actually SHOUTING stuff?? It's quite stupid.
