For the first hour, I´d say I really enjoyed the movie. It was one of the most intensely clausthrophobic and atmospheric experiences I had in a horror movie in a while. I didn´t play Silent Hill, but I confess I enjoyed the idea of following Rosie through the city, and that for a big chunk of it she barely talks and feels almost like a "neutral" character, as if she could be you, like you´re a player of the game going through those bizarre dark places with her. And the creatures are some of the most bizarre and cool I seen in a while. But as the movie progresses towards the third act and the end, it became more and more what I was afraid it was going to turn out to be...
The "big revelation" is mostly The Ring - creepy wet hair little girl comes back with a vengeance - meets The Sixth Sense - protagonists were dead all the time, presumably, only with a Crucible element... On the upside, it´s good for once to see a supernatural horror where crazed fanatics are STILL crazed fanatics and don´t turn out to be right just cuz of the supernatural element is real, one thing doesn´t necessarily lead to the other.
Again, I dunno how much this has to do with the game, but somewhat killed this movie´s chance to be one of the most interesting horror movies in recent years. Still worth seeing, though.

could someone explain to me.... or give me a rational idea of what the ending was... i need to write a review for hw...........rotfl!

I agree wholeheartedly with this. I loved the first half of the movie, and parts of the second, but the 3rd act just wasn't as good overall. Still a very enjoyable horror flick.

I loved the way it began but I wasnt wild about the way it ended. Probably the best game adaption as of date.

The Ending:
Rose, after reaching the basement in the hospital (where the demon in control of the dark otherworld of Silent Hill dwells), finds out that the demon is actually a manifestation of Alessa's desire for justice and revenge. Before the town was abandoned, the people seen earlier in the church were a cult-like group of religious fanatics that burned people they considered to be witches. They burned Alessa, but did not manage to kill her; before they could, the cult accidently set the coal below on fire, and the police arrived, sending Alessa to the town hospital. The demon explains to Rose that it can not punish the fanatics because their "blind devotion" in their beliefs protects them. In order to rescue her adopted daughter (who is the daughter of Alessa), she offers to take the demon into the church. Rose goes into the church, in time to save her daughter, but not in time to save Sybil, the police officer, from being burned. After the Church leader stabs Rose, the demon heals Rose, enters the church, and kills all the fanatics. Rose leaves Silent Hill with her daughter, using her car (which now seems to work). Rose is still in the foggy world at the end, and her husband can't see her.

I´ll try...

If I understood right, Rosie and Sharon were dead from the moment of the car accident, and everything that happened in SH was a post-life experience. The little creepy girl was burned by the fanatics cuz her mom apparently had her out of wedlock, then she became this dark evil force who took revenge on the city by destroying it and killing everyone. The fanatics were stuck in a kind of limbo, denying what really happened and telling themselves the church protected them from the creatures who were really the ghosts of SH´s citizens burned out in the fire. It appears that Sharon was her biological daughter, that´s why she had those memories of the city. I dunno what happened to the souls of the fanatics after her vengeance, if they were destroyed, sent to hell or whatever. It is kinda confusing, actually.

Rose is still in the foggy world at the end,
thats the only part i dont get.....

why?........

just for the sake of a sequel?:D

My theory is
she died in the car accident in the beginning of the movie and is in a post-life world, you know, a kinda Sixth Sense thing.

yeah, ultimatefan is right, that's why

I think Silent Hill was the first great video game movie, but its a lot easier to ***** and complain about things.:o

Chill out, dude, I´m not saying it to *****, overall I still enjoyed the movie and is far above most game adaptations, but the third act felt too cliché to me, it was a rearrangement of things done in recent successful horror movies. Didn´t kill the movie to me, but bugged my enjoyment a little, just that.

I didnt know I wasnt calm. Im just saying the movie had a pretty bad 3rd act but lets really think about the other video game movies, theyre really crap compared to Silent Hill. I think the movie was too long and if they wouldve shortened up, had a tighter plot, it wouldve been truly a great movie, not just a good video game movie. But when youre ina field with ALone in the Drak and Resident Evil, thats not really hard to accomplish.

I agree with that, actually, you´re basically agreeing with me. It was a movie that could have been excellent if it had a better third act, but turned out to be interesting nonetheless.

Most of the bad reviews I read spoke about the potential this movie had. There were some generally creepy ass scenes. The 3rd act just dropped off the map and the ending was WTF? I think it all started with that scene with Rose swinging across the room.:(

IMO, I really think that this movie is awesome. As a fan of the Silent Hill series, I truly think it's a great adaptation.

if this is true....then why didn't the father (sean bean) find the car accident in plan sight once he reached silent hill where all the cops were?

i don't think she's dead...and i don't have an explanation for the ending either...except that mabye the demon, for whatever reason, is keeping them there.

I said this before, got lynched, and I'll say it again - this, for my one showing, was the scariest movie I've seen. Yeah I've witnessed the Excorcist, Omen, Psycho...... but in my lifetime, horror movies like those were spoiled for me through pop culture. But I havn't seen Silent Hill since last March, so if I rent the DVD, I'll get back to you.

Haven´t the cops found the car? I don´t remember now. But remember the cop had an accident too and was bleeding? Why did they need to add that, unless it was to say that she was dead too?

agreed

and my showing seemed to have the volume cranked so it just added to the creepiness...and some of the most disturbing visuals i have ever seen in a movie...

It had great potential. It went too big. They should have kept it to 3 or 4 characters, small and lonely.

she was bleeding because she was involved in the accident too..

and now that i think of it...they got into the accident because of seeing the demon in the road...it was probably all an elaborit plan by the demon to get Sharon into silent hill...Cybil just happened to accidently be dragged in with Rose and Sharon.

oh...and i love and own this movie...i agree with the main point of this thread to an extent...but for the atmosphere and creepiness, this movie was perfect and THE best game adaption ever, imo.

The first half blew me away.

I have to agree with some of the points mentioned. If they were really all dead, then why weren't their bodies found with the car and motorcycle?

That makes sense, but once she got her revenge, why didn´t she let them out of the alternate dimension or whatever it was they were in?

well...apparently sharon's father isn't all that great of a guy according the the second game, maybe the demon has a few things in store for him. i do know that in the second Silent Hill he goes in to get Rose and Sharon only to be confronted with demons and monsters from his own mind...

at least i think that's how it works...

Because the demon took over Sharon's body. Since the demon still exists, the dimension doesn't change.

And Spider-X, Silent Hill 2 has little to no ties whatsoever to the first game. Where did you hear this?
