That is true actually, even in the early 60's stories, Peter wasnt that happy-go-lucky. He was still cracking jokes but it was more of a sarcastic type of humor. I think Bendis is the one who really invented the "happy-go-lucky silly" Spiderman with Ultimate Spiderman. Bendis' spiderman is very immature and cracks a ton of silly dumb jokes. Thats fine for his spiderman though, but that humor doesnt translate well with the 616 version.

Here's the thing, i'm kinda in the same boat as you man. I grew up with the 90's spiderman cartoon and the J.M. Dematteis interpretation of the character. In those iterations Peter Parker was a very mature character yet also very funny and witty at the same time. Stracynski perfected this personality during his run on Amazing Spiderman. This was the personalty i fell in love with as a kid.

However, there's a lot of people, including many of the marvel staff, who think Peter was acting a little too mature and wanted to get Peter back to his single, happy-go-lucky youth expression. Marvel figures that's what made people love the character in the 60's and that's what will make people fall in love with him again in this new millenium. Are they right? Time will tell. Its all a matter of taste in the end. Some people love the "young" Peter Parker and some love the older, wiser Peter Parker.

I can't answer the poll, because my favorite Spider-Man era is a mix between the 70's & 80's... still learning, though still making mistakes...

:csad:

Although we strongly disagree on the marriage issue, I agree with you here! We're similar in the fact that I'm only a few years older than you, and thus only started collecting a few years before you (I started in the Death of Gwen era, I believed you started in the Original Clone Saga era). As a result, that same 70's & 80's era is my favorite, approximately from the Death of Gwen up to the "reveal" of the Hobgoblin as Ned Leeds (which I found anti-climatic).

The problem with early BND was making Pete act like a "stupid teenager" when he wasn't even a "stupid teenager" when he was a teenager. Yes, he made mistakes, but he still had a maturity about him, particularly the whole responsibility thing. So, although I didn't vote, I'd side to a little mature, but still capable of mistakes and definitely still with the wisecracking banter!
