See... I know why this is inspirational and all but... As the years have gone by I just see it as something a very reactionary person tells themselves as a rationalization for being backwards thinking and stubborn despite evidence to the contrary that they could be very wrong. It speaks to me these days less as a mission statement on steadfastness and more a rationalization for being wrong about something.

I find it a shame too since I have never thought of Cap like that.

It depends on who says it. If Captain America says it then you know he means that if you need to defend the tired, the poor and huddled masses then you do the right thing no matter what.

If it's Doctor Doom saying that then he means "Break **** and tromp over the corpses of your enemies."

If it's some jackass who tries to quote it due to really stupid reasons then they just need a smack upside the head.
