Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - Part 1

4 was off because they Blackbeard was a really weak villain. Blackbeard was the most feared of pirates as well as the most known. Even the tale about him being beheaded and his body swimming around the ship three times before sinking after he was thrown overboard is haunting. Though, not only was he the weakest villain, but was the only main pirate villain that wasn't elemental. Had he been a zombie like his crew mates, there would have been more potential. Then instead of Blackbeard seeking the fountain of youth for himself, he could have used it to blackmail Jack into helping him seek something else to expand the story. For such a legendary pirate, 4 did not do Blackbeard any justice what so ever.

Mermaids were more scary and impressive than Blackbeard. So yeah.

So does anyone know if the Neca Deadman's chest 18 " figure had a sword scabbard?

never mind, found a review that shows the figure first coming out of the box. It's doesn't come with a scabbard, but from what I saw the Black Pearl version DID

The mermaids were pretty cool. Besides the weak villain, i think Film 4 also had a problem with lack of imagination and weaker Directing. Films 2 and 3 might have ended up bloated, but they had a lot of passion and creativity put into them. Gore Verbinski's films also have great visuals, On Stranger Tides didn't even look the budget it supposedly had. After the Lone Ranger's failure i think it was only a shame that Verbinski wasn't allowed to work with better scripts.

That's what has me afraid for PotC 5

A few set pics shared by the director

This should be re-shoots though, yeah? I thought principal photography had been complete for some time.

No, no. This is the beginning of principal photography. This movie comes out next summer after all!

Yeah I thought this and the sequel were filmed already.

Wow, it feels like yesterday this movie started filming.

I still think that 3 is the worst one. It's overly long and tedious, they go for the most nonsensical and convoluted "explanations" possible, they completely waste and squander several potentially cool concepts:

-Chow Yun-Fat as a pirate lord. He's barely in the movie and he doesn't do anything cool. They couldn't even give him a cool fight scene (and his death was lame to boot).

-The Brethren Court, useless. They barely appear either, and all of the whole "we need to unite against our enemies" proves meaningless since they don't DO ANYTHING!! They just sit there watching the Black Pearl do all of the work.

-One ship gets destroyed, and the freaking British Royal Navy turn tail and run (despite still outnumbering the pirates like 5 to 1). What an underwhelming end to that climax.

-Killing the Kraken OFFSCREEN in-between movies (with only a handwavey explanation) was inexcusably/unforgivably lame, lazy, and anticlimactic as well.

-Etc.

Not to mention the underwhelming exits of several prominent characters (Norrington, Governor Swann, Sao Feng). And most of it was just so dang BORING!! Like I was almost falling asleep at points, and I NEVER do that in theatres. And it's greatest sin, TONS of wasted potential.

It sounds like she might be the main character, who kind of just runs into/encounters Jack along the way. Which honestly is probably the best way to use him. Jack works much better as the "eccentric" part of an ensemble cast who plays off of/butts heads with the more serious/"straight men" type of characters. He works less well as THE LEAD on his own.

At World's End truly droped the ball on a lot of things, and it was weird to see all those pirates not doing anything during the final battle. On my first vieweing, when the battle finished, i thought they had fought agaisnt some other ships off-screen. Only noticed that they realy just stood there on multiple viewings.

That said, the cinematography, ideas and passion put on display still makes me give it many points. To me, On Stranger Tides was without a doubt the weakest entry in the series. It lacked passion, lacked scale and above all, lacked ideas. The only good thing i can point from it was the mermaids scene and Barbossa being entertaining.

I didn't see much "passion" or "ideas" in AWE myself. n fact, they seemed to go out of their way to cheat an/or take the quickest/cheapest/and laziest ways out for all of the things that they'd set up.

It's like they wrote themselves into corners and decided "ah screw it, it happened offscreen. The audience won't care."

I liked that there were an insane amount of plot threads, and backstabbing/sideswitching running through AWE relative to the first two and the fourth. You have a good point on the Brethren deciding to play it safe and let the Black Pearl fight their battle. Ditto for the Royal Navy. I had hoped these new movies, 4 and 5, would expand the Brethren Court mythology.

Totally agreed, OST is easily the worst for me.

The one thing I wish I could change would be the final fight in OST. I *so* wanted to see Jack show some bravery against Blackbeard and engage him in sword combat. Especially after Blackbeard tortured Jack with the voodoo doll. I feel like the Jack of 1-3 wouldn't have stood for that. Maybe for the moment, but revenge later. So I waited all movie to see payback. Sure, Jack did switch the chalices, but that wasn't enough for me.
