I didn't see much "passion" or "ideas" in AWE myself. n fact, they seemed to go out of their way to cheat an/or take the quickest/cheapest/and laziest ways out for all of the things that they'd set up.
It's like they wrote themselves into corners and decided "ah screw it, it happened offscreen. The audience won't care."
The Brethren and the pirate lords, the world's end passage, Calipso, etc.
They realy felt like old sailor's myths and built an interesting mythology around the series. Problem with these things was that they were rushed by the production. They pretty much filmed the film without a complete script.
It's another reason i dislike On Stranger Tides more, it's script didn't need to be rushed, yet, it was dull and lacked any of "neat ideas" from the previous films. Even the Directing was much inferior. The cinematography went from amazing to just alright. The fight scenes were also shot in such an uninteresting way. I remember seeing the first Jack vs Angelica fight and wondering why a certain song was playing at that time (usualy a more epic tune than the scene needed), or why the fight seemed so unengaging to me.
I think the scripts have been the main crux of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, and i realy hope the next film fixes that problem.
