And this is getting bashed by critics WHY? What about all those positive reactions from CinemaCon? Did they mean NOTHING?!

As we have seen repeatedly through the years, screenings at fan events sometimes seem to result in better reactions. Something about being surrounded by a bunch of fans and their excitement and in the hyped up atmosphere is infectious and it seems to color reactions. It's like a positive mob/fan reaction. One of the most famous comic book examples is Green Lantern. A recent one is BvS. Even films like The Witch and other indie films at festivals get hyperbolic hyped up reactions that don't always align with viewers and mainstream critics. Another example is Blair Witch which received early praise some calling it a terrifying great horror film.

These things happen. It's disappointing when a film doesn't live up to the early praise, but don't lose your **** over it.

Okay, that is one review and really didn't answer my question. Especially as if they were allowed to print the review all the way back then, why wouldn't there be a lot more? Why are the reviews coming now?

It's been known for a while that the film was screened at Cinemacon, and reactions were posted on movie news sites after Cinemacon.

I understand that Marv. But do critics go in high numbers to Cinemacon?

I don't think so. They get press passes, I think those are geared more towards regular movie goers?

I'm not shocked by the difference. Suicide Squad had a lot of hype and love around it in the beginning too, then everyone else saw it.

It is most certainly not uncommon. After MoS I think I caught onto this.

As of right now:

Oh The Baywatch score is terrible?
I didn't know that.
That film was not on my list.

I figured Bay Watch would be terrible, but I'm really sad that Pirates is getting trashed. I hoped they would finally go out on a good note, after OST. That one was terrible.

Disney fails to understand the decline in quality of these movies can be directly traced to the increased role of Jack Sparrow in them. There is a reason that the worst of them are the ones in which Jack is, undisputedly, the main character. Jack should only ever be a supporting character.

Jack was actually envisioned as a supporting character to Will the hero but obviously Depp's performance stole the show when the first came out.

The thing about Jack is there isn't anything to him that wasn't established in the first flick. He doesn't have a character arc, and has simply been the same shifty down on his luck guy, with the heart of gold.

Lower than OST OW.

And does that $80-$85M include Memorial Day?

And for a blockbuster opening Memorial Weekend.
If that includes Monday... wow.

Going to made or broken overseas. For me it is kind of amazing considering how successful the first three movies were domestically.

I want this franchise to stay alive as long as there is a chance Keira might come back, especially as a main character for one more film.

It's not a huge drop from On Stranger Tides. That made $90 million on its opening weekend, but then again that wasn't a holiday weekend (it was released just a week shy of Memorial Day 2011).

I'm glad Knightley did a little cameo for this, but she's better moving forward now and leaving this franchise behind permanently.

Its a big drop 6 years later. That opening weekend is probably the equivalent of like 100m now.

We have a consensus:

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales proves that neither a change in directors nor an undead Javier Bardem is enough to drain this sinking franchise's murky bilge.

Frankly I wish RT.com would stop posting consensuses on films's review pages. They are no better than tweet reviews which are something else that needs to die. The whole point of an aggregator is to gather data and relay it. The site gathers reviews and with simple math arrives at a percentage that a person can view and easily determine the critical response to a film. The aggregator itself should have no say in the quality of the film. Plus the consensus is I assume written by a single writer so the contents, attitude, and tone of the consensus can come down to the mood, opinion, or the observation of some random RT.com staff member with no established credibility.

The amount of shade that can be found in the negative consensuses on RT is amazing.
