Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

I need other women to jump in here and help me gush about Johnny Depp to even things up. I feel outnumbered :csad:

Why is this movie being made?? The first was the only good one.

I love the Pirates Trilogy. The first one is the best, but the second and third are miles ahead of the matrix sequels... which were junk. I have high expectations for the fourth pirates... we shall see. Hopefully they don't drop the ball.

It's being made just for Gamma Ray.

I'm giving this a chance. I have faith they can redeem themselves. I already like the osund of the plot. Plus no Will and Elizabeth already makes this great.

No Will and Elizabeth is a plus for me. Depp was the interesting part of the whole film series

Will and Elizabeth's story is complete. The worst thing Pirates could do is just cycle through it's story over and over... especially when it's based on a romance... romance stories are never original.

While I agree, don't you want to see a new film on par or better than the first? As many have already said, Will and Elizabeth are out and it sounds like it's going to be scaled down compared to the second and third films. As long as Sparrow isn't a complete joke and it's not bloated like part 2 and 3, I'm down for another go-round.

with Depp and Rush coming back minus Bloom and Knightley, the movie has already shaped up nicely

plus, Blackbeard!! :woot:

Yeah, romance stories tend to be mostly lame.

But the romance between Jack Sparrow and Angelica played by Penelope Cruz in On Stranger Tides sounds interesting, It might be the love/hate relationship like Batman and Catwoman, Angelica's description in the synopsis hits that she'll be a femme-fatale and Jack is already a anti-hero.
Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penélope Cruz), and he's not sure if it's love—or if she's a ruthless con artist who's using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn't know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

to me, that's not fair to say since the writing of the sequels were not up to snuff to the original. Otherwise, I wouldn't place so much of the blame on Bloom and Knightley. Especially Knightley who has proven to be a great actress as of late.

I must respectfully disagree here. I thought Sparrow got plenty of time in each of the sequels.

I forgot to mention that also Sparrow's characterization became more weak and there was not much story in the sequels.

I'd like to see the trailer before I get excited about this. Everything is pretty much on the down low as far as what to expect. And I wouldn't expect it to be better then the first... the first I watched in theaters like over 10 times. Behind that, I think my record for seeing a movie in theater is like 4.

Well a teaser will be showing in front of Tron: Legacy.

The problem with the sequels was that there was too much Jack. Maybe it was also because he became a walking joke for slapstick.

I think with the first film they wrote the character of Jack, but thereafter, in the sequels, they wrote him how Depp played him--ultimately making him a parody of what he was in The Curse of the Black Pearl by forcing what Depp naturally added to the character.

I've said this before, it was lazy forced writing in the sequels. If they tried to stick to the formula of the 1st movie, the sequels wouldn't have had weaker reviews. But then again it made more money than the original.

It was like Disney came to the writers and said, we need 2 sequels, you have a week.

I think the problem with the sequels was the "2 parter to make it into an epic trilogy" idea. The Pirates films should have just been stand alones, with Jack meeting a new cast of characters in each one and facing a new threat. Kind of like the Indiana Jones films. The charm of the first one one was that it was just a fun adventure but the sequels just felt convoluted and bloated.

Exactly.

The part was originally going to be a Burt Lancaster type. Depp came in and did his own thing with the already written dialogue from Elliot and Rossio. Then with the sequels they catered to the quirks and looked at only the funny stuff. But they missed the ball completely. He's charming and witty. Not a clown. I mean seriously. But clown make on him in the sequels and that's what he was.

I think whatever their motivation for Jack Sparrow in the first one was... needed to be the motivation for the sequels. He had great writing in the first movie, and the second one was mediocre. But because of Johnny Depp, it was still very entertaining. The first time I saw Dead Man's Chest, I HATED IT, the second time I saw it, I liked it, now I love it. So... It's one of those franchises that doesn't take itself seriously, and that is where it's power lies.

Yeah, it was a happy accident in how the screenplay was written and was envision and what Depp did with the written word.

The problem with the sequels were they really didn't have a clue where to take the story after film one. No-one expected the film to be as well received as it was and so it threw everyone off guard, no doubt in my mind Disney had no idea what they were sitting on and equally had no how to expand on it when it hit big. The sequels suffered from the producers thinking the parts of film one that people liked is what they needed to emphasize and amplify in the sequels, in actual fact it was the movie as a whole which is what people liked, the story was straight forward but littered with great characters and fun action, the sequels were overstuffed with boring characters, convoluted plot and mediocre action pieces (although there were some highlights).
