Rob Marshall to direct Pirates of the Carbbean 4?

Disney is on the verge of putting Rob Marshall in as director of a fourth installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” a move that puts the film on track for a 2010 production start, with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow.

There hasn’t been a director at the helm of the pirate ship since April, when Gore Verbinski stepped out to focus on a movie version of the vidgame “Bioshock” for Universal (Daily Variety, April 7, 2009). Though that film’s lost some momentum, Verbinski has moved on to other directing and producing projects.

Marshall_flemnew Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney have been meeting with a number of directors in recent weeks, because the studio wants to pull the “Pirates” film together and have Depp star in it before he does “The Lone Ranger” for the producer and the studio. While Marshall’s involvement wasn’t immediately confirmed, sources said things look good enough that the studio has begun casting new characters that will appear in the picture.

It is big business for Disney, as the “Pirates” trilogy grossed $2.6 billion worldwide with Verbinski at the helm. Sources say unless things break down at the last moment, Marshall will be steering the pirate vehicle’s next installment.

Marshall, who made his feature directing debut with the Oscar-winning musical “Chicago,” most recently completed another musical, “Nine,” which stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson and Sophia Loren. The film will be released November 25 by The Weinstein Co.

I'm not too hyped for this. Pirates 3 was so bad, I can't get too excited about this film. I think 3 kind of showed they were out of ideas, and just made crap up as they were going.

Yeah, this franchise has been exhausted.

Although I think they may be thinking of opening up a different arc/story over a span of three other films which would be smart if they prepared a good enough first (fourth movie) story.

Not really excited but we'll see if its worth seeing I suppose.

It just never ended. They kept it going and going throwing in more random stuff as they went. The charm of the first movie was completely gone.

Um why do you people who hate them come into a Pirates thread cause its better for people who wanna see them made. If gonna bash the movies why even post in a thread where people wanna give them a chance to make up for 3's mistakes but i gotta say for me Pirates 3 was better then most of 2009 summer films except for Harry Potter 6 and Star Trek.

The first two Pirates films I quite like. The 3rd film was just kind of a jumbled mess, and it showed me that all the plot points they had carrying over they had no ideas on continuing. They just threw in random stuff, and it mostly didn't work. I am skeptical they'll have ideas for a 4th after the 3rd kind of showed they were getting exhausted.

Plus, threads for films are for both lovers and haters of a film...not just the lovers. Haters have equal right to post in here. As long as it is not trolling, which I wasn't doing. I was making a general comment.

Not a single person mentioned or even in tone wrote about the franchise in hateful disparage.

I enjoyed POTC 1 & 2 but the third film was a bit of a disappointment. You could tell Gore Verbinski was getting tired. The film showed it. Again thats just my opinion which shouldn't be a factor as to whether I should or shouldn't post in this thread.

Cause it wouldn't make sense to bash Pirates in the Batman forums.

Phew, at first I thought they said Rob Cohen. Thank God that's not true.

No problem that was more for Trollers for you get alot of posters who hate every movie seemingly.

Sorry if was sounding rude just had to endure alot of Pirates bashing and i feel that Pirates and 2 were well deserving of its hit status. The problems i did have with 3 was Made Barbossa the anti hero at the end and Elizabeth got away with feeding Jack too the Kraken. I just feel that Elizabeth caused jack alot of problems and should have been made too walk the plank again or left like Jack was.

1 and 2 were good movies. 3 was a wreck but looked pretty. I have faith in the 4th movie and I will give it a shot before condemning this franchise to Davey Jones' locker.

I agree.

Although, some people in the SM boards are already saying it will suck.

Well DMC and AWE were victims of forced, hurried and convoluted story lines. They could have easily just had Jack stay of his own accord because it was his ship, and say something corny like the Captain has to go down with the ship or I'm not losing her again.

But instead they forced on an unbelievable love triangle which was totally unnecessary.

because Spider-man movies are actually good, with a great director behind it :o
Uh the first Pirates movie is great:huh: Not to mention that it is based on a theme park ride and Jack Sparrow is one of the most memorable characters of the past decade.

We don't need Will and Elizabeth. They went from interesting to uninteresting. Their stories are done with. Though i do give the writers credit for going ballsy with what happened to Will in AWE.

Spiderman 3 was bad 1 and 2 were amazing. ironically like Pirates 3 was kinda bad and Pirates 1 and 2 good. And some could say the same thing about X-Men and Shrek. We need 4th installments of X-Men and Shrek and Let Adamson direct Shrek 4 and Singer X-MEN 4.

I have to say, I enjoyed AWE more than I did SM3. SM3 was just a pile of dissapointing crap. AWE had a lot of cheesy moments but that is what those movies are. As soon as the butler gave his speech, I wanted to throw popcorn.
