Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

No, part 3 was a bit of a mess.

But my biggest problem with the sequels was that they were too self aware. Of course they can't help it with the rising popularity of the franchise, but when you're too self-aware, then there's too much of an focus on 'the expected' and 'fan service'.

The biggest misstep was making Sparrow a caricature of himself. Then there was the constant regurgitation of gags.

When the dog brings the keys to open The Code, and Captain Teague says "Sea turtles, mate" (to explain how the dog got there), it's just too much to bear.

Seriously, it's constantly,

"Hide the rum!!"
"Why is the rum is always gone?!"
"Sea turtles!!"
"Parley!!"
"Dog with keys!!"

Over and over and over and over and over again. It was enough to drive you insane.

The first time he said "hide the rum" in Dead Man's Chest it was funny, but the over usage of the lines were alot worst in AWE, plus they brought back those 2 British guards from the first movie come back in AWE but are nowhere to be seen in DMC. Made no sense lol

I've got a jar of dirt! I've got a jar of dirt! I've got a jar of dirt! I've got a jar of dirt!

And guess wot's inside et!

Why's the rum gone!?

I liked lots of the gags.

It was some of the plot that made no sense, didn't understand the stuff with the Barbadosian woman.

Being complex is being a mess?

From what I see, read, and hear about AWE, it's a movie where you either love it or hate it; I love it despite the flaws like when they are:

Like you said, it can sometimes be good, but when it doesn't work, it's cringe-worthy.

This is my biggest complaint in both DMC and AWE, too much Jack Sparrow focus; some of it good, most of it bad/or annoying.

There's also a difference between 'complex' and being 'convoluted'.

I think in part 3, there were missed opportunities that were not fully thought out due to possible story problems or even budget. That includes the sudden death of the Krakken and the absence of the other pirate(s) in the final battle.

u are all over analyzing these movies. theres nothing wrong with the rum, parley and sea turtles jokes. now if they use parley or sea turtles AGAIN then yes, it will be a little much, however in the context of which they were used in awe was perfectly fine.

You think it was fine for the dog to just show up out of nowhere, with no sane explanation as to how he got there, just so they could include the pointless plot twist that the keys he had unlocked the Pirate Code? Why couldn't Teague just have the keys? Why would he, the Keeper of the Code, ship the only set of keys away to Port Royal... with a dog? And suppose the dog had never left Port Royal, and they needed to open the book. What then?

It wasn't funny. It wasn't clever. It was just stupid.

All of the Pirates movies have been good. I know people complain about the sequels, but COME ONE, the greatest thing about Pirates is it doesn't take itself seriously, so neither should we. 6 movies in the Pirates franchise that keep the same quality and quantity is a dream come true for my shelf. I know the first was the best, and the 2 & 3 had some major flaws, but because of its epic fantasy silliness, it makes me smile. The first time I saw the second one in theaters I hated it, the second time I liked it, now I love them. Might call that lowing my expectations or accepting unforgivable flaws, either way I'm happy, so I don't really care. My 2 cents.

Plus if you compare these sequels to the Matrix or Star Wars franchise, or hell MOST sequels to most franchises, then Pirates is a masterpiece. Why can't good franchises make good sequels, the Hollywood mystery.

The movies were tongue in cheek yet serious. They pretty much knew how convoluted the plots were getting and acknowledged it.

God, if they make part 5 and 6 then they better keep up the quality. If not, they'll run it into the ground and people will forget how great it started out.

Truth be told, I think they including the sequels have succeeded in becoming more entertaining than the Star Wars prequels. My take, of course.

I mean, at least there was attempt at awe, excitement, and heart.

As long as Johnny Depp Is In them they should do fine.I thought At World's End felt a
little Jack Sparrow light. On Stranger's tides Is almost a spinoff with only Jack and barbosa returning.I am Intrested In seeing Penelope Cruz In Blockbuster film.My hope Is
5 and 6 are new two part story and not trying to extend On Stranger's Tides Into a Trilogy.

This is exactly what I said. Agree 100% Keep them individual adventures instead of tying together into a trilogy.

I never understood the hate for pirate movies by critics or this site. I've always loved em, and my family, friends, and everyone else i know loves em too. all 3 of them. only online have i heard dislike for these films.

well actually the first one doesn't get the hate that the sequel has.

I know that, but I still never understood the hate for the sequels. like, in one critics review for 2 they started by admitting they were wrong about there review of 1, and that 1 was actually a very good film and they were wrong to dislike it. then they say that 2 just doesn't live up to the magic of 1. at which point I both rollled my eyes and decided never to take a review for pirate movies seriously again.

But there's no denying that the sequels lost focus. The main thing was that the scripts, for at least the third one, was a bit messy.

I mean, I know what you're saying, but you can't go 'but it's a popcorn movie'. It's okay to be constructive even if it's a summer film because it's not bulletproof and like anything, it's open to criticism. For examplle, I thought Machete kinda sucked and Black Dynamite did it better. People can argue "Oh but it's suppose to be a grindhouse film." But I would say "Black Dynamite just did it better, and was less self indulgent than Machete."

For example, I think JJ Abrams' Star Trek had tons of plot holes BUT it's a well made and fun movie, with critics and fans agreeing to that notion. So the positive outweighed the negative and people could overlook the flaws.

Davy Jones was amazing... then in AWE his character is barely given a real conclusion.

I agree with one of the above posts about Davy Jones. They had soo much going on in AWE that Jones kind of got lost in the shuffle. Too many characters
