I gotta say that they're a lot of themes and plots that are heavily played out now since they've been done so many times before...

Some of them would have to be...Vietnam, World War 1/2, Holocaust films...a "chosen" one...old/wise advisers to heroes...and so on...

Not to say that there isn't a possibility for a movie with a oft-used theme to be good, it's just that it's been done before...many times before and unless it's a faithful adaptaton from another medium like a Potter film and such, I would just like to see less of these stories involving these played out themes...

Any others agree and what would you like to see less of...

I wouldn't call those themes as much as plot devices, which I agree have been over done. I'd say a theme that is over used is facing your inner darkness. It seems every franchise has to have a film where this is a central conflict.

the orphan living with relatives, who is mistreated. never knows much about their true parantage. but then finds out that they are special. something happens and they can't come back, the relatives are dead. they're spirited away. they and what ever mentor they're with join up with someone who is bad ass. then theres also a chick around in someway. the badass friend and the chick argue but also have chemistry. the orphan finds out that they are some kind of chosen one. giant battle ensues. orphan face villan. mentor possibly sacrificed. it goes on.

at least some or all of these elements are in tons and tons and tons of books, movies, and movies of books.

star wars
harry potter
eragon
wanted
and many many others.

it gets old.
