PlayStation 4 development 'under way' - Sony

Following its annual earnings report this morning, Sony has confirmed it is working on a successor to the PlayStation 3. In a post-report conference call, Sony executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato was queried about an increase in research and development costs for the company.

When asked what the "major driver" of R&D costs was, Kato said--via a translator--that one was "prototype research work, development work during the current fiscal year in [the] game segment."

He continued, "We have a portable NGP to be launched later this year, so we have development expenses to be incurred for this product and for the home equipment. The PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform--when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that--but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there." (Emphasis added.)

Kato's comments come as Sony's competitors are gearing up their own next-generation console efforts. In April, Nintendo confirmed rumors of a Wii successor by announcing that the console will be playable at the Electronic Entertainment Expo next month. (The console itself will go on sale in 2012.) In March, Microsoft posted job listings for a range of "next generation" Xbox development positions to work on "future platforms."

My guess? We probably wont see the thing till next year. Possibly 2013 release

We'll SEE it at next years E3. Will it release in 2013? Who knows... Possible I guess. I can't help but feel slightly annoyed by this news, lol.

E3 2012, late 2013 release in one region, early - mid 2014 elsewhere.

You can push all those dates back a year too and it wouldn't surprise me; Sony should focus on the NGP.

This generation doesn't "feel" like a generation yet. Where's the Shadow of the Colossus? The comeback the size of Resident Evil 4? Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2 and Modern Warfare feel like the only really significant hits so far. I have about 15 games on PS3 that I'd give a 9 or 10 to in review scores, I couldn't count the number I'd do the same for on PS2.

This.

That's likely.

This generation doesn't "feel" like a generation yet.

Even though it's already been as long as the entirety of most generations before it and there's still a couple of years left?

Where's the Shadow of the Colossus?

On the PS2.

The comeback the size of Resident Evil 4?

Street Fighter IV? Fallout 3? Starcraft II, Donkey Kong Country Returns? NINTENDO?

Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2 and Modern Warfare feel like the only really significant hits so far.

What about the FIRST Uncharted, the FIRST Mass Effect, Gears of War, Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Braid, Castle Crashers, Shadow Complex, Street Fighter IV, Red Dead Redemption, Portal, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Arkham Asylum, Metal Gear Solid 4, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, Assassin's Creed, Dragon Age, Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, Starcraft II, etcetera etcetera, so forth and so on?

None of those fit your definition of "significant"?

Yeah. Unless a new Metal Gear comes out on this system, I probably won't buy it.

At least not right away.

I really hope for a 2014 release date. I got my PS3 almost a year ago, I'd like to enjoy it more.

Sony: "We won't begin development on the next Playstation anytime soon. We still feel the PS3 has at least five more years left on the market."

Interviewer: "You do know Nintendo is set to release their next system next year..."

Sony: "...DAMN IT..."

That's likely.

Even though it's already been as long as the entirety of most generations before it and there's still a couple of years left?

Yep. For the reason I listed below.

On the PS2.

And where's the cult classic PS3/360 equivalent?

Street Fighter IV? Fallout 3? Starcraft II, Donkey Kong Country Returns? NINTENDO?

You might have a point with maybe Fallout 3, but RE4 had people hailing best game of all time, none of those other games have a shot at that and I hate Fallout 3. You must realise this is just a personal thing. And you want to call what Nintendo had a comeback? The Wii had less interesting games than the Gamecube.

Some of those games are in that 15+ list and I think Portal would have had to join it too, but you really compare Black Ops to the likes of Uncharted 2 and ME2? Those are the only games, maybe Portal and Red Dead too that feel like a significant best game of all time contender, even if they're not my personal favorite games of this gen (well U2 is). Most of those games are great but not that great.

So there!

I thought the PS3 was supposed to last 10 years?? I'm not buying a new console any time soon. I've only had my ps3 for just under 18months.

The PS3 is still set to last 10 years. Just bc new consoles will be introduced doesnt mean the current ones still wont get their 10 years. The PS2 had a proposed 10 year cycle and has passed its 11 year mark. The orignal Playstation before it had over 11 years as well

Don't get why people are getting excited by the news of a company researching their future consoles. They've been doing this for years. They were doing R&D for what would become the PS3 back when the PS1 was out. Its called economics. You stay ahead of what you give the consumers. Nearly every electronics company does this; releasing technology in phases in order to reap the most capital. I find Sony saying "yes, something is being looking into" no more surprising than being told poop goes in the toilet.

God, this needs to be stickied or something.

I think everyone knows that Sony will still support the PS3... However, I can understand feeling annoyed. I've had my PS3 since launch (well... I had to upgrade to a slim due to my disk drive failing) and I just don't feel like the "next generation" should be right around the corner.

I'm all for them starting development, take a few years and then around 2014-15 give us a humdinger of a graphics machine. Don't just put out a slightly upgraded system around 2013 just to get one out the door so they can compete with Nintendo's new system.

Know what I mean?

So there!

Totally. Uncharted 2 has + 0.2 metacritic than alot of those games. However, Super Mario Galaxy is 0.1 higher, it's power is much more mightier and thus the best game ever for any genre, including flight simulators. Nintendo has the best exclusives, sales and quility wise.

A game (or anything else for that matter) can't become a "cult classic" overnight. We won't know which games of this generation are "classics" of any kind until we move beyond it, gain some perspective, and look back at it objectively.

You might have a point with maybe Fallout 3, but RE4 had people hailing best game of all time

And I think those people are totally crazy.

And you want to call what Nintendo had a comeback?

Absolutely. They "lost" the last two generations, and they turned it around and handily put themselves back on top with the Wii.

Some of those games are in that 15+ list and I think Portal would have had to join it too, but you really compare Black Ops to the likes of Uncharted 2 and ME2?

Why not? It probably sold more than all Uncharted and Mass Effect games combined. That's not a hit? I guess we need to define what we're talking about here. Are we talking about "hits"? Are we talking about Metacritic ratings? Or are we talking about "games Electro UK likes a lot".

Those are the only games, maybe Portal and Red Dead too that feel like a significant best game of all time contender

So a game is only a "hit" if it can be considered by you to be in the running for the "best game of all time"?

By the way, the "best game of all time" label is, in itself, a really dumb idea. (No offense.) What metric are we using? Sales? Review scores? Influence on the industry? How many people wax nostalgic about it on message boards?

Some games are so wildly different, that it's impossible to compare them. How are you going to say something like, "Final Fantasy VI is better than Red Dead Redemption, but not as good as Tetris." I mean, can you see the lunacy of that statement? Those three games are so deeply, fundamentally different that I don't see how anyone could say that one is better than the other, let alone compare them in any meaningful way.

Oh ok, well I must have misunderstood at the time because I thought they meant they would not release another console until 10 years after the PS3 had come out. So 2017. Quite Naive when you think about it :woot:
