Main thing I took away was they are keeping the cell and it will be twice the power or something like that, and looking to keep performance high while cutting a few corners like the Wii to bring costs down.

They ate the brunt of the production costs with the PS3, and by the PS4's time it will be far easier to produce, and far easier for game developers to code for as they will be familiar with it.

I'd like to see the above mentioned cell improvement, more ram, and a better graphics card of course. I really have no complaints about anything else. The SD card slots, use of USB, HDMI, and several other ports are perfectly fine. It's just a matter of making a noticable improvement on the machines performance while keeping the cost down so it's cheaper at launch than the PS3 was.
 
i certainly think they keep with the cell arcitecture for reasons already stated. what i don't know is how long this generation is going to be. i mean until they can get the cost of the ps3 down far enough then any successor would be expensive aswell, since the benefits of chip shrinking would reach both a cell and an advanced cell at near enough the same time. same applies to memory and when solidstate harddisks become viable them aswell.

so lets say you get a $150 ps3 whenever sold at a profit to sony, so costing them say 100. you can multiple all the components 3 times. and sell at 300 or they can multiply more and take a hit on the hardware as they normally do. which would get you improved graphics at 1080p.

Definetly not next year. I doubt or at least hope not for 2011/2012 as well. I think theres still so much more that can be done with the PS3 bc its a very powerful machine. I dont see where a new console can go as far as power and graphics at least not within the next 2 years. With the way the economy is and looks to be in the near future, I think this generation will last longer than the ones previous to it

I hope it doesn't either. The PS3 is just hitting it's stride, it hasn't even been tapped out yet. If they continued to push the PS2 that late in it's life cycle, I see the same for the PS3.

Also you have to take manufacturing costs in. The PS3 has put Sony back 3 billion (2 billion or so the first year, 1 billion or so last). This year they say is when they'll finally get even, then everything past that is pure profit. I doubt they'll put out even more expensive consoles just as they start getting a profit.

Then again with the next Xbox coming out sooner than later, and the Wii HD on the horizon, they might be forced to jump to the next console sooner than they want. I'd rather they not, but they might not have a choice if they want to compete. Tho this also hurts game developers who already are hurting from increased production costs if they have to jump ship to an even more expensive production cycle so soon.

FOR THE NEXT next generation of consoles, PS4, XBox3 and Wii2, it looks like Intel is in, Nvidia is out. The picture for their GPUs is starting to become clear.

They can either convince companies to put in a code path for the chip in Big Budget Mediocre Sequel 7: Vengeance of the Farmland Creatures by sending people with wads of money and begging, or get a console win. They got a console win, and it was the right way to go.

Some people hanging around the Sony booth at CES were nice enough to let us in on the scoop. It seems Nvidia has proverbially bent Sony over like they did MS on the XBox, and are not really welcome there any more. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys, either way, but hardly an unexpected outcome.

Sony is looking pretty desperate nowadays with a multi-billion dollar loss in 2008, and more pain on the way for 2009. The PS3 has utterly failed in the market, and there was a lot of talk about whether or not there was going to be a PS4 at all. Sony needed a reliable partner with deep pockets which would actually be there in 2012 to fund this exercise in DRM, and it found one in Intel. Damn good choice really.

The nice Sony engineering lady at CES told us that Intel essentially bought the win, a theoretically good architecture, no imminent threats of going bust, and not being hated by Sony all contributed too. With a couple of deliverables satisfied, the PS4 GPU belongs to Intel. No word if this is going to be the entire architecture, CPU as well, or not. That, from what we are told, is not final yet.

Moving on to the the XBox3 GPU, also due in 2012, we hear strong rumors (but have not confirmed yet) that it is an ATI design. Given the close ties between ATI and MS over DirectX, the bad blood between Nvidia and MS over the grand Nvidia DX10 neutering, plus memories of the XBox1, this is not a surprise either. The bed was made for short-term profits years ago, time to lie in it.

That brings us to the Wii2, also due around the same time. Given that the ArtX / ATI guys have won about every Nintendo GPU since they went 3D, this one appears to be a no-brainer. If you take into account that it will likely be evolutionary, it is almost assuredly an ATI win as well, but we haven't confirmed it either way.

So in the end, you have Intel with one GPU confirmed, Larrabee, and ATI with another almost totally confirmed. The third is still unknown but likely will be ATI as well. Notice there is no Nvidia in this equation.

That will hamstring the egos in green badly soon, forcing them to spend a lot more on developer relations and tools if they can't claw back a console win. The games for 2012 start coding in a year, so the effects will be leading, not trailing for them.

The only real way for them to get a win at this point is to buy it, and they 1) don't have any money. 2) are bidding against someone who has money 3) are bidding against someone who they picked a stupid public fight with and 4) are hated by the two companies that make the consoles they target. This brilliant management strategy combines to mean they are locked out, if they survive that long.

Next next gen consoles also will likely have a CPU which we know nothing about. That said, given that Intel will basically be designing large swathes of the PS4, it would seem to be leaning toward x86. Given that, and MS's inclination toward x86 software, that would seem a natural path for them to follow as well, if for no other reason than to protect the living room from the ARM scourge running Linux.

With that, we have the first hard info on the next next generation gaming boxes. Given silicon time scales, three years out means work starts about now. ATI and Intel have work to do, but it should be very interesting when all things are done, a radical shift towards the PC of a magnitude not seen since the Playstation replaced cartridges with CDs. µ

honestly the wii si the only one that needs next gen, PS3 is great and i don't hear anyone complaining about xbox360. if they make a ps4 within the next 3-4 years they'll probably lose even more money than they could've made off of ps3

I´m still going to get one, so, 2012 seems right.
Going by the fact that i´m going to buy one in June/August, that makes 3 years and a few months until next gen, and because i never buy a console the moment it cames out, there still is 4/5 years until i think on buying a PS4.
 
I think this current generation could easily last another 4 years no problem. I'd rather it did - games like Crysis look great but the jump from what is currently possible on the 360 and PS3 is not enough to warrant producing a brand new console.

you are right especially since companies lose money when it comes to making new consoles. With the exception of Nintendo, I dont the other companies can afford to bring out a new console during a recession (which hopefully doesnt last that long), especially not when theres still so much juice left in this generation.

For those of you who don't want a PS4 yet...when did you get your PS3?

October 2007, a 60gb version. And that muther****er was expensive. If Sony thinks I am ready to shell out another couple of hundred dollars for another console without utilising and enjoying my ps3 then the have got another thing coming. I think they should focus on making the ps3 entertaining and a worth while console rather than just trying to up things to the next level already.

Considering the relatively small library of games for the PS3 compared with the 360 and Wii, I don't see how Sony could have the cheak to bring out the PS4 so soon.
 
Keeping with the Cell line of chips makes sense to me. Sony sunk a lot of money into creating Cell, and their third parties have sunk a lot of money into making development tools for it, so it only makes sense that they build on it instead of changing course. Also, I hope that PS4 continues to use Blu-Ray, because even though it's dandy that PS1-3 all used new types of media, Blu-Ray is still very new and will hopefully be the industry standard by the time PS4 is ready, making a new format unnecessary (also, Sony has a LOT invested in BR, and I doubt they want to ditch it any time soon).

I don't think we'll see a new console any time soon though. My conservative guess is that PS4 will launch in 2014, because the economy is crap right now and the HD consoles still have a lot of power left in 'em. It's going to take something big to make a noticeable jump over the current gen's graphics, like real time ray traced light or something of that magnitude.

The only change I would care about is size. The PS2 slim is great because of its small size (barely bigger than a DVD case).

The PS3 is such a ridiculously bulky, heavy console.

Ummm...what the hell are you talking about? The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have about the same amount of games and the same amount of great exclusive games.

The Wii on the other hand...the vast majority of those games are nothing but shovelware garbage. Nothing to be really proud of.

good grief, I also cant beleive that we are into year 3 of the PS3 and people are STILL trying to use "lack of games" as an argument against it. I mean like seriously?
