A "true-to life level of immersion" in the Star Trek universe.

Star-Trek-VR-Ann-E3-16.jpg

Ubisoft announced Star Trek: Bridge Crew, a new game for virtual reality platforms, during its E3 2016 press conference.

The game promises to offer a “true-to-life level of immersion” in the Star Trek universe, where as officers of the Federation, “every action and decision” made by players together will determine the fate of your ship and crew.
Get the fact sheet and trailer below.

Overview
Star Trek: Bridge Crew puts you and your friends in the heart of a starship, where- as officers of the Federation- every action and decision you make together will determine the fate of your ship and crew. Developed specifically for VR, Star Trek: Bridge Crew is the only game to offer a true-to-life level of immersion in the Star Trek universe.
In Star Trek: Bridge Crew, the Federation dispatches you and your crew to command the new vessel U.S.S. Aegis as part of a critical initiative. Your mission: explore a largely uncharted sector of space known as The Trench, in hopes of locating a suitable new home world for the decimated Vulcan populace. The Trench contains stunning beauty and undiscovered wonders, but also strange anomalies and dangers yet unknown. The Klingon Empire is also active in the region, and their purpose is undoubtedly a threat to the Federation’s plans. It’s up to you and your crew to chart the sector to determine the Klingons’ aims, and to secure a peaceful Federation presence.
Features
Designed from the Ground Up for VR
Star Trek: Bridge Crew was developed specifically for virtual reality and capitalizes on the powerful sense of social presence possible only through VR. Our hand tracking with full body avatars and real time lip sync allow players to genuinely experience what it’s like to serve as an officer on the bridge of a Federation starship.
Operate as a Crew
Make strategic decisions and coordinate actions with your crew to complete the mission. In co-op, players can form a crew of four to serve in the roles of Captain, Helm, Tactical and Engineer. Each is crucial to the success of the varied missions you face and the safety of your crew and ship.
A Unique Ship for a Unique Mission
Take command of the U.S.S. Aegis, the first ship of her kind. Whether plotting courses and analyzing scan data or hacking enemy shields and targeting vulnerable ship subsystems, you’ll have Starfleet’s cuttingedge technology at your fingertips. The Aegis’ unique design makes her ideal for the dangerous mission in The Trench, but you’ll have to master her systems, both familiar and experimental, to save the day.
A Shared Galactic Trench
Star Trek: Bridge Crew offers a compelling and engaging co-op experience, with an unmatched sense of reality. You’ll need more than just individual skill to overcome the challenges you’ll face with one another; communication, trust, and close crew coordination are the keys to victory.
Mission Generator
In addition to a dynamic storyline, Star Trek: Bridge Crew features an “Ongoing Missions” mode, procedurally generating missions for countless hours of Solo and Co-op adventure.

Damn, nothing in ATL. Seriously Sony, you go to Arkansas over ATL? :nuhu:

I tried it today. The unit looks big but feels very light on the head. The demos to choose from didnt seem all that appealing but I went and played Eve Valkyrie bc that seemed to be the closest to a AAA game experience, which is what Id be using this for. The headtracking was VERY responsive. Fast with no visible lag. I dont like first person mode in vehicle-based games but it seemed and felt right here. Although I was only on it for less than 10 minutes, I didnt feel sick either which was a concerned of mine.

The one disappointing thing thats noticeable is the visuals. It clearly looks sub-1080p. The graphics were simplistic and seemed more like a PS3 game. Even the UI of the PS menu looked low res in comparison to non-VR. If the NEO is able to help improve the image quality, then that will be welcomed bc I can imagine it being jarring going from a non-VR to VR game. People were excited when it was announced that every game could be playable via a virtual screen, but I dont see why one would take Uncharted 4 for example and view it below 1080p. It wont be crisp and sharp.

Overall it is good for PS VR 1.0 and Im sure the next iteration will improve on the tech. I was unsure before but its definitely something I would buy. However definitely not near launch. The library just isnt there and doesnt seem to have much to justify a $400 purchase. Its also too much for me. Im sure in a year or so, one would be able to get it for $50 or more off.

I'm interested in how Gran Turismo will look with it. I'll probably pick up a PS4 this Nov when GT releases.

I kind of hate that this is GameStop only. Not only that.. But only their website

I've decided to wait... Making the finale preorder GameStop only has helped. Sure my wife said go ahead and get it but.. I really just don't feel like dropping 500 bucks right now. PS4 Neo is on the Horizon and I want to see how that pans out, plus I'd like to upgrade to a 4K TV in the future.. VR, while cool.. Is just untested tech for me. I may wait to see how things pan out first.

EP Daily Rundown for July 29, 2016

In a fun-sized Friday edition of The Rundown, we've got the first details on the next Hearthstone add-on, find out how much space you'll need to play the PlayStation VR headset, find out what high-speed DC superhero is going to cameo in Suicide Squad, take a look at the new small screen Superman, and finally, get an update on the future superhero projects from Netflix and Marvel!
Hearthstone is getting funky in its next add-on. Blizzard has announced One Night in Karazhan, a new adventure pack for their popular digital card battle game. It’s not a full expansion, but does include new single-player missions and 45 new cards, all based around the haunted castle of Karazhan in Deadwind Pass. The location has been featured in previous Warcraft games, but as with everything else in Hearthstone, it’s a lot more silly this time around, and is now the home to a funky all-night party. Like the other Hearthstone adventure packs, One Night in Karazhan is divided up into several different wings that can be purchased separately. They’ll be released on a weekly basis, with the first wing hitting the table on August 11. Expect more Adventure Packs and full expansions for Hearthstone in the coming months.

You might need to clear some space in your living room if you want to get the PlayStation VR. Sony has revealed how much free space you’ll need to run the PlayStation VR. According to a user guide published by PlayStation Asia, the device requires about 60 square feet or 5 and a half square meters of cleared space in order to function properly. That works out to about 2 meters across and 3 meters long, which is probably going to be a tight fit for some game rooms. Other VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive require a similar amount of space, and the more room you have, the more you’ll be able to walk around within compatible games. If you don’t have the space, you can always sell some of your furniture, which might be necessary given that the PlayStation VR will cost $700 in Canada. VR isn’t cheap, but at least Sony’s will cost less than the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which can run well into the thousands depending on how much you pay for your gaming PC. Before you shell out the cash, you might want to try VR for yourself, because although it’s cool, you might not think it’s worth the price. Sony actually recommends that players do this, and they’re setting up free demos in game stores across the globe. The PlayStation VR will launch this October.

Now that their shared cinematic universe is up and running, it looks like DC is rushing to fill their movies with as many crossover cameos as they can. The upcoming Suicide Squad film is already set to feature a cameo by Gotham’s favorite do-gooder Batman, and now it looks like another member of the Justice League will run in for an appearance. Ezra Miller has reportedly filmed a cameo scene as The Flash, which is expected to be part of the main Suicide Squad movie, and not just an end-credit stinger. It seems unlikely that he’ll have much of an impact on the story though, given that the film would have been mostly finished by the time he shot his scene. This means it will likely just be a cutesy cameo, kind of like what DC’s arch-nemesis Marvel has been doing with their cinematic universe, and this also indicates that DC and Warner Bros are planning to have even more cameos in their future films. Hopefully when The Flash appears in Suicide Squad, it will be better than his brief manifestation in Batman v Superman, which was downright confusing. We’ll get to find out when Suicide Squad hits theatres next week.

Marvel and Netflix want to increase their superhero output, but you’ll still have to wait. The two entertainment giants are collaborating on loads of new projects, including Luke Cage, Iron Fist, a Punisher solo series, new seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones, and finally, a crossover series called The Defenders. How long will we have to wait for all these new adventures? Speaking with IGN, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos revealed that they plan to produce their upcoming Marvel projects more quickly, which means audiences will have less time to wait in between seasons. That doesn’t mean they’re going to rush. Sarandos adds that they’re not going to sacrifice quality for time, so we’ll still have a bit of a wait. Luke Cage is the next Marvel and Netflix collaboration. It arrives September 30, followed by Iron Fist in Spring 2017. The Defenders will also arrive in 2017, which means we likely won’t get new seasons of Daredevil or Jessica Jones until late 2017 or sometime in 2018. As for The Punisher, Netflix hasn’t revealed when his solo show will start shooting, but they’re hinted that he’ll be part of The Defenders ensemble.

Reveal "probably" coming at the end of the year.

Velocity-Dev-PSVR-Title-Tease.jpg

The next game from Velocity developer FuturLab is a PlayStation VR title, the studio announced.

“We were approached by Sony last year to come up with a distinctly FuturLab concept for their shiny new hardware peripheral,” FuturLab said in a blog post. “No, it’s not a hardware peripheral, it’s a portal into a completely new medium.”

All the developer can say about the game right now is that it’s “very pretty,” “very cool,” and that “nobody has felt any kind of motion sickness whilst playing.”

FuturLab says it will “probably” reveal the game at the end of the year, but that it “reserves the right to keep schtum until it’s ready to show.”

Ace Banana (TVR, October)

Complete with single player and multiplayer co-op gameplay, Ace Banana features full-filled bright environments with comical weapons, outrageous enemies and wacky soundtrack that families will go bananas for! Intuitive controls and challenging levels that are quickly learned but slowly mastered will make Ace Banana a favorite of PlayStation VR early adopters.

In the game, players assume the role of a Banana Archer, the world-famous protectors of bananas. In opposition are hordes of mischievous monkeys, set on stealing bananas from the player’s stash.

As the enemies arrive in waves, players use the PlayStation Move controllers to mimic drawing, aiming and shooting their bow with an arsenal of arrows ranging from plungers to fish and even pandas! Players will need to stay on their toes as when all their bananas are stolen, the game is over!

Developed by TVR, Ace Banana is scheduled to ship with the PS VR hardware launch this October.

Dying: Reborn (Nekcom, Winter)

Dying: Reborn is a dark, horror-themed puzzle game that creates a unique first-person room escape experience. Examine, collect and use items to solve a variety of creative puzzle types to escape each spooky room, feeling shivers down your spine at every turn!

Developed by Nekcom, the title will release this winter.

In the arcade space shooter Mixip, players control two ships simultaneously, wielding a Move controller in each hand.

Combine the ships for new abilities, dodge heavy bullet fire and grab upgrades to increase weapon power and take down bosses!

Developed by TVR.

Pixel Gear (Geronimo Interactive, October)

Pixel Gear is a colorful 3D pixel shoot-em-up with a variety of humorous cartoon monsters and ghosts as enemies.

Each level is filled with interactive objects that exhibit entertaining reactions when hit and upgradeable weapons that grant the ability to slow down or even stop time.

Developed by Geronimo Interactive, Pixel Gear is scheduled to ship this October.

Weeping Doll (TianShe Media, October)

Weeping Doll
is a story-driven horror adventure where dolls come alive, animated and fueled by the negative thoughts of their child owners. here's IGN's review (8.5):

http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/10/05/playstation-vr-review

Basically, they're saying it brings an "affordable" VR experience to the masses, but with some compromises.

After reading the review, I'm more convinced to wait before getting into this. The tech is in its infancy, and this "version 1" is going to need to iron out all the kinks and bugs and quirks.

It sounds like the biggest "compromise" is the PS camera and its relatively limited field of view, compared to the other headset setups. Also, wire management, especially, sounds like it will be a pain.

I'm sure in a few years there will be a version 2 and most likely that will be an improvement over this launch version. I'll start to give it a look then.

Right now, it doesn't sound like it's worth it, to me at least, to shell out $500 for the VR package. way too early.

And definitely way too cost prohibitive if I have to shell out $500 for the VR launch package AND $400 for the Pro to get the "best" VR experience.
