PlayStation VR/Project Morpheus Thread

I was planning on running around town on Thursday to find one and pick it up, but the reviews have me questioning that. Most of the reviews I've read say that for VR, it's "good enough", which is disappointing, but something I can get behind considering it's for a console. The biggest factor for me though is the tracking issues. While the problem seems to vary by game and reviewer, it's obviously prevelant enough to make me question a purchase. Hopefully it's something that can be fixed in patches and isn't exactly a hardware issue.

I had the Playstation VR Pre-ordered since March, but ultimately decided to cancel my Pre-order today, because the software line-up right now is just too weak to justify spending €500 on new hardware, that will collect dust after a week of use.

Even when I was 100% sure I would be picking it up, I had no illusions that it was something I would use all the time. At this point, it's a novelty purchase. Nothing wrong with that at all, so long as you're aware of that when you buy it.

In regards to the tracking issues reviewers have mentioned, I read something on reddit that makes me feel better.

Apparently there are two types of calibration. When you start up the VR, you're given a brief set up for calibration; it's purely basic changes...I assume so people can quickly get started playing.

The second type of calibration is far more in depth and even allows for IPD adjustments (something reviewers like IGN claimed the PSVR did not offer). This setup is found in the Devices section of the PS menu. Apparently many if not most reviewers have not used this second method to calibrate their test kits, as the majority of issues mentioned are either completely negated or dramatically reduced. It's still not going to be as good as the Vive, but it apparently makes a massive difference in quality of visuals and tracking.

Yeah, nothing wrong with novelty purchases, but I'd use the PSVR for literally only 1 game, and that's at most a 90 minute experience. I know there are other games that would provide more playtime, like Battlezone, RIGS and EVE: Valkyrie, but I'm not that much into the whole cockpit shooter action, unless it's a Gundam game.

And I'm also a bit worried about Sony's whole strategy of delivering mostly short VR experiences. The whole Playstation VR disc is basically a collection of one and done games, because they basically have no replay value whatsoever.

I still want to get the Playstation VR, I really do, but right now I'm going to wait for some good games to be released first, before buying it.

Superman Flying VR experience!!

motion sickness be damned, I would strongly consider getting a VR unit if a game let me experience flying around the skies of Metropolis like Superman.

Totally understandable. I don't think Sony intends for it to be a novelty item; there are a ton of VR games coming out; the problem is just that for now, they are limited, short "experiences" due to the time crunch to get stuff out for launch (not to mention simply being new tech). I would normally wait for more complete game selection, but after playing some (non PS) VR at conventions, I'm really eager to give it a go at home, even if it means being stuck with simple stuff for a while.

I'm not much of a superman fan, but yeah, that'd be awesome. I don't think the motion sickness would be an issue, considering it'd basically be like cockpit games, which from what I hear are the least likely to induce motion sickness.

Superman VR, Spider-Man VR, give me frikkin Green Lantern VR. Then of course a Gundam game I mentioned earlier, but the one game that would make me get a PSVR immediately, would be a Digimon VR game. I need a game I can get immersed in, and that provides more than 30-90 minutes of play time.

yep.

some immersive, unique, full length experience would get me interested in VR.

i bought one, its definitely cool but lacks a lot of good games at the moment. i havent tried the until dawn game, horror kinda freaks me out in VR. might buy it when i have a bunch of people over. there are a few puzzle demos i tried out that i might end up buying. who wouldve thought stacking bricks in VR would be fun. Looking forward to Robinson in November. VR worlds is kinda lame other than London heist which was too short but still really fun.

Batman Vr is friggin amazing. for 16 bucks on amazon prime i felt like it was really worth it, basically like buying a movie ticket. i haven't completed it yet but i love it.

As for tracking issues, yes they are there. I had various problems with the environment shifting in and out when i first started using it. I did restart my ps4 later in teh day and moved my camera a bit and i saw less of it. I am hoping sony ends up releasing new controllers and possibly a 2nd camera like oculus is doing to help with occlusion because turning around makes your hands disappear.

Played the Ocean Dive and Heist game so far. Also picked up Batman VR and Eve. Really, really good. I haven't had any tracking issues, and found the motion controls for Heist's shooting to be really natural, which was something I was concerned about. In Heist, there was a bit of bouncing when my hands weren't moving a few times, but when in motion, it tracked my hands perfectly fine. Standing up and moving around was smooth and without motion sickness, but I just tried Luge and it hit me pretty hard. The automatic movement was fine, the problem was tilting my head to change the angle didn't actually tilt my view. I quickly exited that and the ill feeling didn't stay, thankfully.

If you're having issues with tracking, adjust the camera, make sure you're in a low light environment, sitting in the required viewable area (it's hard to know where that is at first, but you'll get used to it).

Most importantly, go to Settings > Devices > VR. This allows for full tracking configuration/adjustment of your camera, controllers, headset and display; far more in depth than the basic adjustments you're first presented with.

I played some of the Batman VR game. It's still very much a demo of the tech, but its pretty damn cool. I love having to actually reach down to my waist to grab/put away gadgets from "my" utility belt. The graphics are pretty good; at one point I was standing on the roof of a building, and I wanted to step closer to the edge and look at the street twenty stories below...my heart started racing and I almost lost my balance because it all felt so real. There was some pretty bad environment shifting in the first level, but that's the only game to have that problem for me.

I wish the characters would react to things you do. Not having this hurts the immersion and makes you feel like you're still just watching a cutscene instead of being "there". For example, at one point I was interrogating a bad guy I caught. He was hanging upside down in front of me. I tried pushing him to make him start swinging, but nothing happened; my hands just went right through him. But stuff like this isn't the hardware's fault; it is purely on the developer's side. London Heist handled this decently; if a character held something in their hand and I reached out to take it, they would jerk their hand away from me.

Played a bit of EVE as well. Doing barrel rolls made me sick at first, but that began to subside once my brain accepted I was in a spaceship. The game itself feels more like an arcade game, but they definitely succeeded in making me feel like I was actually inside a spaceship. Outside of the fighting, the game is VERY dark and muddy, like they were trying to hide lackluster designs. This was a bit frustrating; I'm in VR, I want to actually see stuff.

All in all, I think the hardware is great. I wish it was capable of a little higher resolution, but you quickly get used to it, and smart developers can overcome this with how they design stuff. Any other negative things I can think of are purely on the developer's side. Sony laid the ground work, and its up to the game studios to push it to it's limits. I consider it a good purchase and I'm excited to see what AAA studios are able to do with more time and experience.

Telltale partnering with someone to make a game for VR would be amazing.

Heard almost nothing but good things from people I know. I'll definitely get the Playstation VR, just waiting for a title that I can see myself sink several hours into.

just curious, where do you have your camera placed? I have it below my tv, was wondering if i should move it to set on top of my tv.

My camera is sitting on top of my TV. I have a large TV, but it stands on a short entertainment center, so the camera is about 4.5' off the ground. I'd say you'd want to try and keep the camera angle as straight as you can; having to angle it up or down too many degrees might reduce it's tracking accuracy. I'm also standing between 4-6' away.

i just know when im playing batman VR im usually standing and ive noticed in certain situations the environment would shift in and out. Camera would be about a foot or 2 below me. Seems to happen more when i reach up or put the move controller in front of my face.

I got two articles from the same place.

That's happening because when you reach up, your hand is moving out side of the camera's view, and when you put your hand in front of your face, you're blocking one or more of the headset's lights. Having the camera at a higher point will increase your reach, but there's not much to do about blocking the headset.

My suggestion would be to go into the camera calibration and use this to get a better understanding of what the camera can see, and either adjust the camera or where you sit/stand to avoid moving outside of the camera'a view.

As for the environment moving on you, that's happened to me with only Batman and Job Simulator. I think it has to do with how the dev team chooses to handle these events; my guess is that the other developers write code that forces the VR world to stay where it is and simply ignore the lights that move out of view instead of allowing the camera to try and find it, causing the world to jump around.

So some developers have a lot to learn, but it's just a matter of time before solutions to these problems are common knowledge and implemented across the board.

so can you play VR games while entirely seated?

or, do some games require you to stand up and move around the room?

like, to move your VR character around, do you have to actually move yourself or do you just press a button/use the controller?
