Please help - Backing up files through McAfee

I'm getting ready to reformat my computer so I backed up all of my files on cd's using McAfee Total Protection 2009's Backup And Restore Files.

Everything was saved and compressed into one icon on the cd. When I click to open the icon/file on the cd, a window pops up asking what program I would like to use to open the icon/file with...

I have no clue what program I should be using to open the icon/file...I also tried to go back into McAfee looking for a way to be able to open and could find nothing.

So my question is - What do I do to open these files on the cd???

What kind of file extension is it? WinRAR or 7-Zip can open most compressed archives, ATM. But since you backed it up with McAfee it should be their own compression software and want you to use that. They should have a "Recovery option" in that suite, and just go from there. That's what I would think at any rate.

That's what I thought too being as the option is 'Backup AND Restore'...but I didn't find anything. I'll have to go back through and look again.

As for WinRAR or 7-Zip...I have no clue what that means...

WinRAR & 7- Zip are compression ulilties, along with decompression. These are the best on the market for it, IMO. They have tons of different formats they are able to work with, so hopefully if you can't find a backup on McAfee that this should be able to help you.

Yeah, I would look through the program again and that's a little odd they don't have it, but... McAfee is weird in general, tho. Hehe. I just tend to use MS Sync tool to my home server, or External drive so I don't lose anything right away if I need to do a reformat, well, all the important folders anyways.

Ok, so I looked over McAfee very carefully and found that there is a 'Restore All' option on the 'Backup And Restore Files' section. Would I be right in assuming that would solve the problem?

That might be right...depends though...did it just backup your "data" which means music...movies...docs...but not the OS...or did it back EVERYTHING...

I think it backed up all of my data. I still have the Operating System cd.
