What is your honest view on censorship?

Where do you draw the line?

What does one have to do with the other? Political correctness isn't about censorship, it's about tact. I don't think anyone who believes that PC tendencies are good would believe in actual censorship.

At the very least, you shouldnt be able to make fun of minorities, gays or muslims.

I think with that, it's less about doing those kind of jokes, but more the content of the joke and the way you do it. If it's just playful ribbing without any sign of hate, then it's cool. If it's clearly venom to incite hatred, then it is not cool.

But, I don't think even THAT'S Political Correctness. I think it's just the bigger terms for minorities and the like. For example, instead of saying that someone is "black," one should say that they're "african-american."

Why does it have to be devolved into a black and white answer? It depends on the audience. It can be tactful in a lot of situations, but completely pointless in others.

How so...

What about the British cartoons depecting Muhammed with a bomb on his head?

Was that PC or Censorship?

You seriously need that explicitly explained? Jesus, your name really works.

So is Political Correctness right or wrong?

Wrong...........where does free speech come in?? When people don't have adequate rebuttals, they want to shut down the opposition. They want take away the pain.....make it go away. LOL

I don't like what most of you say on these boards about Christians. I'm not going to ask for you be shut down.

But as I noticed....one of you said Muslims should be off limits???????? Why???? We just nabbed Muslims in a JFK airport terrorist plot, and you want Muslims to not be made fun of or talked about??

Free speech is what it is. You don't like it?? Move to Iran.

Just like with any idividual, you have to test the water and make sure you aren't really offending anyone when you make any sort of comment and that's the line you should draw.

unfortunately, there is a floating line because there are some things you can expect from your parents or friends, yet if your boss was to say that to you, it would offend you.

However when it comes to broadcasting, i think the majority of people should live and let live as long as it isn't spreading ignorance or hatred. I think comments attacking individuals are acceptible but general sweeping comments should be avoided (although the exception should be comical routines because their purpose is to spread laughs).

viewers should exercise the power to switch off if they are being offended

All depends on who's saying it. You can say it's wrong, you can say it's not fair, but it all depends on who's saying what to whom. I can't call a girl a *****, but another girl can call her one in a playful manner, yet if I do it I am a misogynistic pig.

I don't know, half of the jokes I know are about midget eskimo lesbians getting drunk with Jesus and Muhammad. I'm not sure I could commit to learning all new jokes....

See, to me that kind of stuff doesn't matter. I don't care if you call me Black or African-American--I know what I am and both terms are appropos in my opinion. Now, if you call me a ni**er I'm gonna have to beat that ass--that's beyond being "politcally correct"...that's downright demeaning. But aside from that? Nah.

I really don't think America should have to split hairs over such things. It's like Asian Vs. Oriental. Does it really matter? Especially if we know your behind hails from the Orient? C'mon. Sometimes I think this country's culture spends more time arguing over semantics than merely getting the gist of what's necessary: showing general respect and not being hyper sensitive.

Being offensive is 80% intention. If you intend something to offend, it will. If not, it won't.

if puff daddy called you a ******, would you beat his ass?

just out of curiousity

I would beat his ass just for putting out all that lame music. :hyper:

But in answer to your question, he wouldn't call me a ni**ER. He'd call me a ni**A, a derivative which carries an entirely different connotation. The context of the conversation would determine his ass-beatableness. :o

So if a white person asked Hey what's up ni**a? That's acceptable based on the connotation?
