The pension should apply per victim not per spouse.
Back in the olden days polygymy actually helped women to a degree, a widow would still have a place to go. Consider that in a healthy human society there are slightly more females than males, especially when, back in the old days, the guys used to fight more wars and all that. Things aren't like that now. I guess I could see polygymy amongst consenting adults, but then, why is that when we hear of most polygimist situations it's always a guy with all these young girls, usually around 14 years of age to garuntee virginity and all that? Perhaps it's best to do away with idea altogether because there is simply too much room for abuse and mismanagement.Correct me if I'm wrong but don't the majority of polygamy marriages in the world take place in the middle east? The middle east isn't exactly the land of equality of the sexes.
The pension should apply per victim not per spouse.
But the purpose of pensions like that is to give the spouse something to live off of, right? What if a cop had 100 wives? Do each of his survivors only get $1000?
Truely.I'm against polygamy purely for fiscal and psychological reasons. One person in your life is draining enough. 2?![]()
Reading through the thread a lot of people here made some really good points as to the legal complications of legalized polygamy marriage.
I forgot to mention the big "D" word. Divorce.
When this happens the children would be taken for a very tramatizing ride. I also believe the divorce rate would go up because so many people would get into a polygamy marriage without really knowing what they are getting into.
Homosexual marriage does one thing...allows two people to get married. It does not complicate anything as far as taxes, rights, etc.
Polygamy does complicate and blur laws. First of all...lets just assume that we all are willing to overhaul all of the marriage laws to fit multiple spouses. Okay, well...if a man can have multiple wives, then a woman can have multiple husbands...so theoretically a mans 3 wives could all have three husbands. But wait...their husbands are also married to multiple people. What if two men are married to the same woman???? What if two different men are married to the same woman...and that woman is also married to a wife of one of her husbands...and what if her wife is the sister of one of her other husbands...it gets too complicated.
The ONLY legitimate arguments I can see, legally, against polygamy are: 1.- The fact that if it were legal, a lot of people might get married to multiple partners, and not be able to support the numerous children they might produce, and 2.- That a lot more of us may wind up in incestuous relationships (whether that's known to us or not is purely up to the partners). Even that second issue is shaky at best.
Other than the money issues, I really don't see much problem with it. I'm a one-woman man, personally (in the rare case I'm actually with someone), and I'd only marry a woman who was in a relationship solely with me, but what other people choose to do in their bedrooms is really not my business.
