Tori: Poor Little Poor Girl?
Spelling being squeezed out of dad's millions? Plus, Electra and Foxx refute dating rumors, Nick and Vanessa go into PDA overload and more ...
July 26, 2006
Will Tori Spelling end up inheriting less than what was spent on her lavish first wedding? Us Weekly believes it could happen now that her estranged mom, Candy, has been appointed sole executor of dad Aaron's estimated $500 million estate.
A "family source" kvetches to the mag that, contrary to reports of a mega-million-dollar payout, the former "Beverly Hills, 90210" virgin, 33, will pocket just $200,000 in cash and $600,000 in investments, less than the $1 million her folks ponied up for her champagne fountain-filled nuptials to Charlie Shanian in July 2004, a union that lasted only 14 months.
According to the insider, the funds freeze-out could be Candy's way of getting "revenge" on her daughter.
"I believe Candy had a lot to do with what was left for Tori," says the mole, who adds the prolific producer's will was changed three months before his June 23 passing.
And while Tori's brother Randy is earmarked to inherit the same amount, he's expected to end up with a hefty chunk of his father's fortune because he's still tight with their purse string-controlling mom, says Us.
"Randy is set for life," maintains another source. "Candy will take care of him."
A "devastated" Tori, who appears to be playing up what the sympathetic magazine describes as her "new modest lifestyle" and struggle "to make ends meet" (she was snapped shopping at a pawnshop and a dollar store), "doesn't have enough money to buy an apartment, let alone a house," sniffles a confidante.
The self-described "daddy's girl" can at least take comfort in knowing she ranks higher in the Spelling hierarchy than her mom's nail buffer and pillow fluffer: Candy's manicurist is reportedly in line to receive $25,000, while her interior decorator is tipped to get $50,000 (the family has a sprawling 56,000-square-foot Los Angeles mansion, valued at $150 million, along with several other properties).
Tori and Candy have long been at odds; their family feud went cringingly public when they began trading barbs after Aaron's death.
Tori lamented to Us that she learned her father had passed away from a friend's e-mail ("My first thought was, I can't believe my mom didn't call me!," she fumed) and hinted to People that "an outside party wedged this close family apart," a reference to Beverly Hills, Calif., businessman Mark Nathanson, a longtime family friend (he introduced Aaron and Candy).
Candy, who insists Nathanson is just a pal, called her daughter's comments "meanspirited" and accused her of tainting her father's legacy.
Their ripped-from-a-movie-of-the-week rift (possible title: "Mother, May I Sleep With Anger") allegedly heated up after Tori kicked Shanian to the curb in September 2005 and took up with fellow married actor -- and future "Tori" tattoo enthusiast -- Dean McDermott, whom she wed in May. (According to People, Tori introduced Dean to her dad two weeks before he died, the first time she'd seen or spoken to him in nine months.)
Adding to the animosity: "So NoTORIous," Tori's semi-autobiographical VH1 sitcom, in which Loni Anderson played her mom, a dizzy blonde with a serious shopping habit.
TMZ.com, meanwhile, traces the bad blood all the way back to the aforementioned million-dollar wedding, claiming mother and daughter argued in the months leading up to the ill-fated aisle-walk, with Tori miffed because the opulent affair "wasn't big enough," and Candy, who planned it, peeved that not enough of her friends were invited.
For now, Tori remains mum on the will -- Us says she may contest it -- and is looking toward the future, although apparently a much thriftier one than to which she's accustomed.
"I'm moving on with my life," she told the magazine while browsing at a thrift store with McDermott. "I'm just focusing on starting a loving and healthy family with Dean."
