Possible movement on Black Widow spin-off?

Feige has been free from Perlmutrter for a while now and yet we get 2 Ant man films before BW. That does not scream priority. It should have been part of that Cap marvel slate.
Almost like they want to get this fan request film out of the way and move on. Fans of Wanda and Vision should not think Marvel would just green light their solo films. They are going to have to wait their turn like Widow did.

The Ant Man series has been in development since 2006. It's not a surprise we've gotten a couple of flicks in during the past dozen years.

It's also not surprising that Feige hasn't rushed a BW film to the big screen in the three years since the breakup with Marvel Entertainment. A Post Avengers 4 Natasha solo makes a lot more sense than it would have earlier when she was working alongside her superpowered chums. Now hopefully that sequel talk will turn out to be false.

And that's fine. It does shows that Widow was not so high up the priority list at the time. That's cool, better late than never.

I like that Marvel won't give in to fan request films when fans demand it. No one really demanded Guardians of the Galaxy at the time or the Eternals film now, sorry Moon Knight fans...

You do realize that Ant-man 1 premiered in 2015 under Pelmutter's regiment, right? Feige got free in late 2015 when most of the slate was already finalized. They put Spider-man in there because Sony demanded it. Feige went through hell and high water to greenlight Black Panther and Captain Marvel under Pelmutter.

If you seriously believe BW is an "obligation" to the fans you are clearly delusional. No studio approves a multi-million production in budget and marketing because some fans "demand it"". If Feige was so submissive to fans requests you would have seen an Iron Man 4 or a Cap 4 instead of Eternals or Black Widow or Guardians. Feige makes THE MOVIES HE WANTS TO MAKE. period.

It's clearly a priority since they are almost at point blank range from a director and properties like Nova with much bigger demand are just in rumor Phase. Do you know how many years fans have been asking for Nova?

Honestly, I've never been that excited at the prospect of a solo Black Widow film and would rather see another property get a chance. Even in the comics, I think she works better as a supporting character. But if Feige and co. have an idea they think is worth pursuing, than I'm willing to keep an open mind.

I'm really curious to see who they'll have as the villain. I could see the Serpent Society working.

Yeah agree with this

In my opinion, this should have come out after the first Avengers or Iron Man 2. Not after the fourth Avengers film. The timing is simply quite off. Imo, they should just focus on a She Hulk movie or a Spider-Woman movie if there should be another female solo Marvel film.

They can still do those, but Widow has built up a strong following with moviegoers, stronger then some think.

I also watched Berlin Syndrome a couple of days ago and am exited about the potential of where they can take the character psychologically.

I have no idea why people use this argument, or the similar "This doesn't need to happen because we have Captain Marvel now."

Well to me, it looks like they are only fully committing to a Black Widow movie because of the success of Wonder Woman, and I'm sure others think that as well. There's no logical reason why we have to wait more than ten years (assuming this gets released sometime in 2021 or beyond) since her introduction in Iron Man 2 when they had the time/effort to release film/s for Spider-Man, Gotg, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Thor, Ant-Man, Black Panther and Dr. Strange.

As was already pointed out, Ike Perlmutter seems to be the main reason.

And from the talk over the last few months of movement on this, and now actual news of looking at directors would probably put it as a 2020 release, seemingly with GotG3 & DS2.

News broke about Perlmutter and the Creative Committee being booted in September 2015, so it's only about 2.5 years. Also consider by that point they had Civil War in the can, were breaking story on Avengers 3&4, those films and Widows part in all 3 may not have been served by plonking a BW film in the middle of them.

Do you guys know that in Mission: Impossible- Fallout there is a character named White Widow? How about that?

Lea Seydoux from Ghost Protocol has been my pick for Yelena Belova precisely because of her role there.

Or Rebecca Ferguson from Rogue Nation/Fallout perhaps?

Shouldn't Yelena's actress be significantly younger than Scarlett Johansson?

Sylvia Hoeks from Blade Runner 2049 would also be good.

She could easily be portrayed as Natasha’s contemporary. Y’know How Marvel likes their mirror-image villains.

You know I saw an incredible young actress in the movie “our kind of traitor” called Katia Elizarova. She might make a fun Yelena. She’s younger but she’s also got a “I’ll kill you” look and she’s Russian which could be interesting

If we didn't already get:
Red Sparrow (2018), Atomic Blonde (2017), Lucy w/ Scarjo (2014), not to mention Columbiana (2011), Salt (2010) and how many versions of La Femme Nikita (1991) like Point of No Return (1993)... or maybe Tomb Raider?

Not that Black Widow would be the same, but she would need something to stand out. Romanov vs Belova just won't be enough IMHO.

Now give her something to investigate like Latveria? There's an idea. Or perhaps work a crossover of some sort. I imagine some wouldn't care, but I think Mockingbird, Quake, Colleen Wing?, Hellcat?, maybe even figure out a way to include a Spider-Girl (Jessica Drew) or other female super could be a great way to get her a movie. SHIELD should come back to the big screen in my opinion.

From https://www.cbr.com/black-widow-kimberly-peirce-director-shortlist/

Marvel Studios is still trying to find a director for its yet-to-be-officially-announced Black Widow film. The frontrunner has been Berlin Syndrome and Lore director Cate Shortland, but now there might be another name added to the shortlist.

According to film reporter Jeff Sneider, Kimberly Peirce, director of Boys Don’t Cry and the 2013 remake of Carrie, is joining Shortland on the shortlist of potential candidates to helm the Black Widow movie.

She sounds awesome! I would love to see Kimberley get the gig!

Gee the way scarjo is handling the rub and tug thing, I’m starting to think black widow should just begin with two agents saying “oh my gosh I can’t believe the widow we saw in the avengers was a skrull the whole time! It didn’t even look like the real black widow! Anyway here’s Olga kuryenko as Natasha”

I loved Olga in death of Stalin

Ms. Johansson is a traditional limousine liberal. She supports all of the politically correct positions but puts her paycheck over all else.

'Black Widow' Movie Finds Director in Cate Shortland

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/amp/heat-vision/black-widow-movie-be-directed-by-cate-shortland-1126708
Marvel Studios’ Black Widow standalone movie has its director.

Cate Shortland, the Australian director perhaps best known for the Nazi drama Lore, has signed on to direct Black Widow, Marvel’s action-adventure project that will star Scarlett Johansson.

Shortland, who hails from Australia and does not have agency representation, had a fan in Johansson, who pushed for the helmer. The actress admired Shortland’s handling of the female lead in Lore, a critically acclaimed 2012 drama that told of a young woman who leads her siblings through Germany as the Allied army rolls in. Her most recent film was Berlin Syndrome, a 2017 thriller that starred Teresa Palmer.

Jac Schaeffer wrote the most recent draft for Widow. She also wrote the upcoming female-centric remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Nasty Women.

Johansson’s Widow is reportedly set before the events of the first Avengers movie and sees the actress reprise the Russian spy-turned-super heroine. The movie will be Marvel’s second female-centric movie after Captain Marvel, which is due to open March 8, 2019.

I guess this means that Black Widow will be our first MCU movie of 2020.
