Prequel to 'The Thing'

Oh, man. The trailer covers the same beats as the original, exactly. Only this time, replace Russel for Winstead, and David with Edgerton.

Disappointing. I hope it's simply a matter of how they cut the trailer, and the film is able to do something else.

One could argue that about a lot of films and their sequels. I don't mind that it is the same because it being a semi-reboot/prequel is fine by me, show the next generation how cool this type of terror is. (as long as they keep it like the originals paranoia horror)

That is key in making this prequel great. There really hasn't been a great paranoid film in a long time.

the best thing about that trailer was the snyth at the end. but yeah, as long as they don't swap out the tension created by the paranoia with lame jump scares it should be alright.

Agreed. If they just substitute the paranoia for just cheap "jump" types of scares I will be disappointed. Though I know there will be some of that, there was in the original ('82 version) as well. But as long as they keep the paranoia feeling through out the film, and not knowing who to trust and the twists and turns of who to trust, than I'm game.

Watched it again, I may have been too harsh. Hell, Carpenter's version technically is a remake, and look how that turned out.

Like Solidus mentioned, the tension, the atmosphere, that's what made 82's version such a classic. The way they end this trailer worries me though.

The best aspect easily is the set design. They're respecting Carpenter's vision.

Not a bad trailer, I liked it for the most part. Of course it had to end with the obligatory jump scare. Why do studios feel the need to shove that s*** into every single trailer for a horror movie? Do they think people are actually frightened by that anymore? It's the same formula every time:

1. Trailer comes to a close
2. Movie title
3. One last scene depicting a character looking frightened and nervous, when all of a sudden, SOMETHING POPS OUT AT THEM!
4. Date of release

Give me a break. It's like they think we're all idiots.

I don't know how anyone is going to come away from that trailer thinking it's a prequel rather than a remake.

That's what I thought, most people about my age probably don't even know about the original let alone know this would be a prequel to it. It doesn't help that it has the exact same title as the original though.

Goosebumps...but this prequel looks like a remake in parts...should be called The Thing: Prequel. Dumb ass Hollywood. 1982 movie will own this one.

Yeah, it's not that great of a trailer. But I'm just happy to see some footage, which has a great look... that anamorphic is always aces.

We'll just have to see.

They don't think we're all idiots, but there are definitely some idiots out there. Plus, it's an advertisement so they're showing people that this movie will indeed have some jump-out moments.

Let's face it, the general public far outweighs the number of people who read the Hype Forums... Yes, we're probably all a little more cynical and harder to please, but when I go to movies and I see trailers (even the ones that I can predict every single beat) a majority of the audience still jumps in their seats when those "scary" jump-out moments happen. It's a sad fact, but people do still love that crap.

Look, here's the deal, and I find it's the same problem with a lot of horror films these days........

The cinematography is too crisp, too clean, too bland.
It adds absolutely no atmosphere at all.
Everything looks cool instead of looking threatening and uncomfortable for our characters.

Is this because everything is shot digitally now? I don't know. But these filmmakers need to stop making everything look so clean. There's no texture, everything looks FLAT.

The acting is there, the set pieces are there, the music is there, the scares are (hopefully) there, but the images look blah. And unfortunatley that's something that remians from the start to the finish of the film.

Almost all movies/horror movies look exactly the same now or days and thats just freakin boring.

Run of the mill covert remake trailer IMHO.

At least there are less ex-model/Hollywood-type actors in this than most horror remakes/prequels/spin-offs. From the looks of the trailer, the majority of the cast seem to look like average everyday people, which is a welcome change.

Digital is part of it, but also color correction and lighting has a lot to do with it as well. You're right though, most movies seem soulless and standard, like every film is copying off the other. I agree. It's got to stop.

Make something look unique and fit the atmosphere. There is something to having a film look rough around the edges.

I've never been a fan of MEW and think that she is a bland ass actress. If they had hired a real actress I'd be onboard with the cast at least.

I disagree. First saying because there is a black guy....? There are white guys too in it, should make no difference, yes there is a black man, but there are white people in it too.

Second, flamethrowers were there because they were in the original, they found the burned bodies at the camp, so they probably had the same kind of tools as the did the other camp for digging up the thing out of the ice. That is kinda like saying its lame that Star Wars PT used lightsabers as well.

Location, ya it is the same, but that was to be expected, it takes place in the same area, again like Star Wars we go back to Tatooine and many of the other same places. I don't know what you expected with that, though it seems we get to be more in the ship this time which is cool.

And dogs? Ya they were there again same similar base, that was established in the originals, and remember the thing arrives as a dog in the first one, so they need dogs not only logistically but that is what the original lead into. One could argue that it was always going to look like the original, and it kinda is a love letter/prequel at the same time.

Again it may borrow a lot from it, all that matters if they have interesting characters, and the paranoia feel, then I'm fine with it. I hope it the best, yes it could end up being bad I'm not denying that. But the reasons you used really don't hold much water to me, I just don't know what you really expected.

Overall, this feels like a great prelude/hoamge to John Carpenter's film. The feel of Carpenter is in this movie, but also it's different as well.
