Prequel to 'The Thing'

I love Carpenter's film and was very enthusiastic to see the trailer, but it looked awfully generic.

I didn't see the trailer. Now I have.

It didn't really do anything for me--anything that it was supposed to, anyway. I do like that girl from Scott Pilgrim.

I prefer her with different coloured hair, though.

It looks good to me but trailers are often misleading. I'm not so against it as some are even though I am a fan of the original. I'm keen to watch this though. A sequel would've been nice but a prequel with the proper story telling how the Thing got loose is acceptable to me.

Not much of an update on the film but the other chick who stars in the film, Kim Bubbs, talked a little about the film in Blast Magazine:

An actress since childhood, Bubbs tends to play stronger female roles, but switches up her pace with the more reserved and fearful Juliette, an additional female character that wasn’t present in the original film production. Bubbs describes the character to be very cerebral, likeable and sweet.

Van Heijningen Jr. deviated from the original production by adding female characters such as Bubbs’ Juliette and Winstead’s Kate.

“The producer wanted to really respect the original so a lot of attention was paid to the details of the original production,” Bubbs added. “You have to take into account the piece that came before it. It’s a cult classic and the original has a large fan base so there are a lot of expectations.”

Bubbs describes the Norwegian production as a totally different experience in comparison to her previous work.

“It was great to have that foreign element to it,” she said. “But all Norwegians speak English.

“It was totally different and the really cool part about it was the combination of puppetry and special effects.”

Bubbs says fans will not be disappointed with this prequel. She philosophizes, as normal human beings, we are almost always critical of our own work; however, Bubbs predicts the film will do phenomenally among the die-hard fan base.

Sounds promising. I really hope they get this right.

One of the things that I've read about that I really love is that "The Thing" itself is pretty much going to be done with practical effects and accentuated with VFX from the company that did the Prawns in District 9.

AICN reviews The Thing.

Here's part of it:

Its basically a cover of one of your favorite songs from one of your favorite bands. It hits every beat and every note as it should but doesn’t really add anything new or different to deem it necessary or distinguishable. Yes we are seeing different characters at a different location but we’re essentially seeing the same events unfold not only that but events that we’re discovered and alluded to off screen in The Thing ’82. Part of what made Thing ’82 scary and enduring was the air of mystery surrounding the discovery of the charred Norwegian base and not knowing what exactly happened there. The Thing ’11 now gives us the horrifying details without stepping on the toes of the ’82 film. Even though we are finding out specifics, and lovers of Thing ‘82 film may not want to, its not taking away any of that air of mystery from Carpenters film.

With all that said The Thing ’11 works both on its own and as a prequel. It starts at a brisk pace and doesn’t let up. Like I said earlier it knows the notes and beats and hits them when its supposed to – the scares, the gore, tension, suspicion, paranoia – all there. The tone, look and feel is definitely Carpenter-esque. I don’t know if the score was finished but pieces of the 82 score bookended this one which lead perfectly into the end credits sequence tying the two films together.

Some of the effects work looked like they needed that final polish but the creature was as disgustingly terrifying as it was back in 82 only able to do more now, obviously, via CGI.

Overall I would recommend Thing ’11 to newcomers and fans of the Carpenter film alike. The audience I saw it with certainly enjoyed it and jumped and cringed at all the right moments. To those doubting the necessity of taking this trip back to Antarctica I say take it, sure you’ll see some things you’ve seen before but you will still enjoy the ride.

I think a new trailer was shown at Empire Big Screen over in the UK. Came across this tweet:

@M_E_Winstead Just saw the brand new trailer for #TheThing @EmpireBIGSCREEN. It looks fantastic! Congratulations. Cannot wait!

I'm looking forward to it more. It sounds like an updated version of The Thing done retro to resemble the original story.

From that review it sounds like the Let Me In remake which is good I suppose.

Let Me In did enough to separate itself from Let the Right One In. I whined and moaned when the "remake" was announced, but both films have their place.

Hopefully, this is the same.

Andky Serkis is going to motion capture for Brimley.

I want to be enthused for this, but I'm keeping that sensation in check. The trailer didn't do anything to change that. Here's hoping the trailer just held a lot back, because that would be awesome.

I think the creature looks pretty cool, look forward to seeing it in action in the film.
