From Persistence Of Vision:

2nd Quarter 2006

POV Previs was recently awarded previsualization work on Marvel Comic's Fantastic Four 2 (A 20th Century Fox Production). POV Previs completed three sequences ranging from 50 to 110 shots per sequence. Sequences were constructed through a combination of Maya and XSI platforms. A hand off to the production facilities in Vancouver occurred during the first and second week of July. The film's director is Tim Story. For more information please check this link:

What is Previs?

Previsualization started only a few short years ago as a tool for Directors. It involves generating proposed shots for a movie, in a much lower quality. This is intended to provide a layout and setup for a visual effects shot. In today's productions, it is often necessary to see the actual motion of the camera and other objects in the scene to accurately prepare for the shot.

Previsualization is becoming more and more common due to cost effectiveness of the overall budget.

I could be wrong, so feel free to correct my uneducated thoughts here....but does this have something to do with doing the CGI as you go along as opposed to doing the CGI in post, therefore, maybe just maybe making me feel better about the short shooting schedule?

good god thats a major run on sentence, ducks out before Malus sees it...

4 minutes later...I'm always watching...;)
Hey, it read fine to me.

They seem to have done a lot of flying stuff. I suspect they will do the Fantasticar stuff really well :D This is very promising.

Great find Retro!

No problem Matt.:D

Its basically a computer-generated(animated) storyboard of sequences.Every big movie uses it nowadays. It helps the director and effects supervisor a lot in planning.

This might explain more: http://www.bluetights.net/journal.php?id=20

I have no idea what is going on. Loud noises.

Use of tools to produce films efficiently can bring about higher quality films in less time. I hope that applies here.

Exactly. And on top of that you have a director who has already done one of these movies, a cast of actors who now know their characters better than ever, as well as advancements being made in prosthetics etc There are so many ways in which this time can be better optimized.

Cool!

Does anyone know if there was much/any pre-vis work done for the first film other than the standard storyboarding? If so, I've never seen any mention of it.

This could be a very useful tool in creating what I hope to be a much "bigger" film than last time.

Slowly but surely this movie takes shape  :p

A-hemmm! All of Ms. Kelly's class! Print a copy for future use!

Seriously, these are sometimes called animatics. I first saw them used for the Hoth scene on the Empire Strikes Back where they were just crude pencil animations. You can see an example of them on the first X-men dvd of the fight between Logan and Sabertooth on top of the Statue of Liberty. There's also a really cool one on the Daredevil DVD of a scene they didn't film where in order to get DD across the street in the scene where he tries to save Elektra's dad, he has to jump from vehicle to vehicle (class, pay no attention to THAT sentence!).

It really is an inexpensive but effective way for the director to be able to show his vision and removes a lot of guesswork on the part of the cinematographer and crew.

Come to think of it, I DID see animatics of the first film. It was some original test footage that was leaked that was mixed with interviews of the cast. May have been from Comic-con of that year or something. I have it downloaded somewhere.

WOW!!! is it just me that lot of that stuff didn't make it into the theatre or were way different then what we actaully got to see.

I guess time was the biggest factor that is why they couldn't deliver last time!!!

And the same problem i see happening this time.

DAMMIT FOX!!!

Sounds good to me!

Holy ****, a lot of that stuff I hadn't seen before.I really liked the Johnny flying bit. And the whole space sequence looked so much more dramatic in the clips there.

You never saw it??? Its really old. The space stuff was taken from Armageddon I believe.

Wow, that was really cool. Some of that stuff almost looked like final product (seen on such a small screen where details are hard to pick up). They certainly have become more sophisticated with the animatics. The ones for Empire were just rudimentary pencil sketches put together in a jerky stop-motion. What you posted is very impressive!

Yeah i remember the test footage and the previs from the first film it was some how leaked to the web. Pretty cool stuff:up:

A few days ago i saw some animatics of a scene with Mr.Fantastic which i don't think they ever filmed. Forgot which site it was.
