My brother and I currently own a Wii, and plan to purchase a PS3 sometime soon.

I have heard a lot of horror stories about PS3's and how they have a great tendency of breaking down and overheating and such. Given the very high price, I would like to last. Now, I assume I can purchase a warranty with it, but it is an inconvenience to have to take it back to the store for a new one constantly.

Has anybody here had any great problems with the PS3s? I'm not counting discontinued models, as it is pretty known knowledge that they had some serious flaws.

no they have a very solid reliability rate, always have

I have never had a problem with my system.. Nor have I heard of any incidents where the system broke down.. Are you sure you aren't thinking of the X-Box360? because earlier models of those were constantly overheating and red rings of death and what not.. Supposedly the problem has since been fixed.

You are thinking about the 360 not PS3. The PS3 has a fail rate about 1% (as does the Wii), the 360 is closer to 30%. Now that was for the earlier 360's and they have improved the build on the newer ones. Not to mention MS shelled out a billion dollars on an extended warranty for them as well. Hope that clears it up for you.

I could be. That's reassuring guys, I appreciate it.

I've had mine for almost a year now and there has been no trouble with it at all. I'd say it is usually on for 12 hours or more per day, especially if I watch a movie at night and fall asleep... never overheats, will very seldom crash depending on how much I put it through. So I would say there's not much of a problem with it

If it helps I echo them on this, the PS3 is very reliable, and you might be thinking of the 360. The 360 at one point had a near 30% failure rate, which has been decreased since. The PS3 and Wii (like said above) are very solid machines, the failure rate is very close to non existant.

I got mine probably about 3 months after launch, and while sometimes it can be slightly hot to touch, it stays pretty cool. I've yet to have any signficant problems. I've had about 3 lockups, all 3 while web browsing memory intensive web site pages (1 was via remote play with PSP), 2 of them allowed me to use the PS button to restart the system, the 3rd I just had to flip the switch on the back. All 3 times the PS3 booted right back up with no prob, and I've yet to have any problems in game.

Of course the PS3 may have problems. Nothing is 100% reliable. Now that I got that out of the way, the PS3 is very reliable and reports of failure are pretty low. The PS1 and PS2 were both plagued with problems early on after release but so far Sony has not had the same issues with its current hardware. Thats a good thing, considering its the most expensive one on the block

I've had my PS2 since 03 and I still use it :/

You got yours about 3 years after launch. Launch systems tended to have DRE issues. I got mine in summer of 2001 and it cant play DVD movies or dual layered DVD games. But I cant really blame Sony for this as Ive used swap magic with my system and thats not advised

I have a launch system too, and it stopped being able to play new dvds. Didn't have problems with games though.

i, along with 2 other of my boys, own PS3's and we haven't had any technical difficulties with ours. Sony is pretty good when it comes to their products regardless of what they are. i own a Sony camcorder, digital cam, and cell phone and i've never had a problem with any of them.

however, i have a 360 and it's the 2nd one i've had. the first one broke on me. when it comes to Microsoft products...they always find a way to give me problems.

I think you confused it with the 360 because the xbox has many breakdown problems that myself had encountered as well as many friends and ppl that i know. As for the playstation 3 i only knew 1 guy that had a problem with the ps3 not reading the discs. So i think it's a very reliable system although i do not have one myself.

My PS3 messed up, although it was entirely my fault. Unlike the PS2, you can't excessively (sp?) turn it off from the back switch, which I did. However, I don't believe it was that that messed me up though. My first PS3 wasn't reading a game of mine and got all glitched up and wouldn't work, so I switched it off from the back while the disc was inside. It *****ed up hardcore. However, I sent it back and got a new one and have yet to turn it off from the back, and it works PERFECTLY! No overheating problems from leaving it on ALL DAY downloading various things or anything.

Overall: The PS3 is wonderful and has very little chance of crashing on you as long as you don't do stupid ***** like me. Hope this helps!

One issue I'm no happy about with my rig is the connectivity. It bounces from great to non-existant in a matter of hours. Not really thrilled about that.

The PS3 we have at the TRU I work at constantly f**ks up. But I think that's more due to the genius who designed the display for it putting the console itself into small, metal box, with only a few holes at the top for the hot air to escape from. If you touch the metal on top, it gets hot enough to burn you at times.

Also, I find it odd that Sony and MS have sort of switched roles this generation. First wave PS2s were notorious for the high laser failure ratio, while I've never heard of an original xbox messing up. And now, first wave 360s are notorious for the RRoD, while I've heard very few stories of PS3 failure.

Nintendo always makes a high quality product though :o

I have both PS3 and 360, and PS3 is leaps and bounds more reliable. The graphic are also sharper, and the sound is far superior to 360. Also, the PS3 has much more responsive controls when comparing both consoles' wireless controllers. Overall, PS3 is a much safer and rewarding purchase. (I'm on my second 360, and even this second one hasn't been without its problems).

I have yet to have a problem with my PS3. It is a quality product.
