Kutaragi really wants you to know the PS3 is a computer. Plus, 120GB hard drives?

June 16, 2006 - PlayStation head-honcho Ken Kutaragi
has been making a concerted effort lately to let people know the
PlayStation 3 is intended to be a computer and not just a game system.
Adding further leverage to this argument are comments Kutaragi made
recently in an interview with Japanese newspaper Nikkei BP.

According to GamerNode, Kutaragi hinted at the PlayStation 3 being offered on a built-to-order basis, as many PCs are.

Kutaragi says, "A PS3 just for you! "As
the PlayStation 3 is a computer, we might even offer it on a
built-to-order basis, customized to the needs of each and every user,"
Kutaragi is quoted as saying. "The hardware components have been
designed in a modularized format with this possibility in mind."

When the PS3 launches this November, it will be available with a 20GB
hard drive for $499 or a 60GB hard drive for $599. As an example of
built-to-order possibilities, Kutaragi indicated that larger 120GB hard
drives could be available as early as next year.

Oh Kutaragi, you crazy foo'.

Can only imagine the droves of confused and upset customers I'll be dealing with when they want to know why their PS3 won't play such-and-such game because they don't have the right PS3 specs to play it, if Sony goes ahead with this.

One of the advantages of consoles over PCs is clarity. Everything you buy for a console will work on it. Why change this?

Good stuff Sony keep making these decisoins & this is also another way for Sony to get even MORE out of their Customers over pointless stuff that should not even be there to begin with. Good job Sony you are well on your way to becoming the next Sega

It's already been said that even if this goes through, The games will be optimized for the abse PS3 unit and not be allowed to go over taht. If you want Extra Ram that would be for the Linux side of things.

It's almost like Krazy Ken has an insurance policy on the playstation's life, and he has decided he wants to collect.:down :(

cool... i'll have a straight up PS3, no extra bullsh--... just a game-playing console, please. maybe that'll make it cheaper than $600?

So why even bother thinking about the 600 dollar model? It's like for multimedia enthusiasts.

I take it your going to be getting that one

nah, i'm geting mine at launch. money isn't a big deal to me, but if can get one cheaper than $600 (i want the high end model) built to order, then i'll go for that.

Whoa, Zen, didn't recognize you with your new avvy on.

Looks good on you. MUCH better than that Snake guy. :p

wait, what's that sound?! would that be the final nail on the coffin?

Because the $600 model has the memory card reader and the other one doesn't

You'll be able to buy a memory card add on and beside that if you want to transfer your PS2 saves over, couldn't you use USB between the PS2 and PS3?

I do like me my Rockman and thanks. :o

Has the basic specs of the PS3 been revealed? What are the perks of the basic package and what is it we need to make it..."our" PS3?

Now I'm not one to knock on Sony or any of the game companies but this Kutaragi guy seems to be getting way ahead of himself. The feedback upon hearing this news may force Sony to delay the PS3 launch (again)...it really leaves one worried especially since I'm itching to get my Tekken on...

And he did say "might" right? It ain't written in stone as has everything Sony has said over the past year

Would you put it past Sony to charge like, 100 bucks for this add on? Because I wouldn't.

Sounds like its gonna be a two man race again, this time between Nintendo and Microsoft... funny, even though they've been chided for close to a decade as a "kiddy company", Nintendo seems to be the only one that can stand the test of time.

I don't even know what the hell is inside a PS3 anymore.

What is Sony doing?

This looks like a big mistake for Sony
I already have a goddamn computer.

But I'll buy it anyway. MGS4 is worth 600
