Kutaragi: PS3 is "clearly a computer"
Thursday 8-Jun-2006 10:27 AM Hardware upgrades and expandable components may be on the way for Sony's next-gen console

Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi has bigged up PlayStation 3 as a full-on computer today, noting that PC-style upgrades and build to order systems could be on the way.

"Speaking about the PS3, we never said we will release a game console," Kutaragi said, In an Interview with Japan's PC Watch. "It is radically different from the previous PlayStation. It is clearly a computer. Indeed, with a game console, you need to take out any unnecessary elements inside the console in order to decrease its cost. ... This will of course apply to the PS3 as well."

The PlayStation boss continued, saying that the PS3's highly configurable hardware overrides any issue of cost, and even suggested that the next-gen PlayStation could keep up with PC technology. "The PS3 is a computer," said Kutaragi. "Lowering costs is important but more important is its capacity to evolve.

Advertisement:"I think the HDD will gain in capacity. If a new technology gets into mainstream PCs, the PS3 will have to adopt it as well. Maybe the Blu-ray drive will become writable. Well, maybe not at this point.

Kutaragi then continued his 'PS3 as a computer' campaign, saying that the HDD is not the only element that gives the console a computer nature. "Everything has been planned and designed so it will become a computer. The previous PlayStation had a memory slot as its unique interface. In contrast, the PS3 features PC standard interfaces. Because they are standard, they are open.

Kutaragi continued: "We put up no restrictions. Because it is a computer, it can interact with anything, freely. If someone is familiar with PC building, he or she can easily upgrade PS3's HDD."

Console traditionalists might be put off by all the talk of yearly tweaks and upgrades, but by the looks of it this is exactly the kind of route Kutaragi would like to take with the PS3.

"I think a year from the launch we could indeed extend the configuration of the PS3. Why not!" conceded Kutaragi. "Okay, this is may be joke or a personal opinion. I mean we have no such plan at this very moment. However, companies like Dell or Apple have such programs. In the PC world, specifications rarely last more than two years. You need to update them. I believe the PC is always evolving. I think that the time may come that the 60GB HDD would become too small or the RAM to low. Such issues are numerous."

It looks like the days of tamper-free, technically inferior consoles could be over. But can the PS3 really compete with PC technology? Do gamers really want to upgrade their consoles every few years? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

I will be damned if Sony ends up winning. I want them to die a horrible horrible death

Not that its any of my business but could you tell me why there's alot of hostility towards Sony? Really, I'm just curious. Be gentle...

  How much more of this does Sony think people can take before they chase everyone off.

As it stands now, I have close friends that are Sony diehards, and they are now considering other systems for themselves. Even me, who is a big PS2 junkie, is going to make the Wii my system of choice to start. Why doesn't Sony just hand the reigns over to MS and Nintendo.

:down to Sony.

WELL, FOR ME, IT'S BECAUSE THIS IS ALL JUST A REPLAY OF THE BULLS**T THEY PULLED WITH THE 'PS2'. IT WAS GOING TO REVOLUTIONIZE GAMING, AND THE 'PS2' TECH WAS GOING TO BE THE CENTERPIECE OF HOME ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE NEXT DECADE...........AND THAT'S PARAPHRASING AN ACTUAL QUOTE. 6 YEARS LATER, THEY'RE STILL MILKING THAT PIECE OF S**T FOR ALL IT'S WORTH, AND CONTINUING TO DRAG HUNDREDS OF CROSS-PLATFORM TITLES DOWN TO IT'S LEVEL. :down

ASIDE FROM THAT, 'SONY' HAS JUST BEEN VERY SMUG AND COCKY FROM THE ONSET OF THE NEXT-GEN CYCLE. IT'S LIKE THEY THINK EVERYONE WAS COMPLETELY OBLIVIOUS TO THE CRAP THEY'VE PULLED IN THE PAST, AND WILL JUST HAPPILY ACCEPT ANYTHING THEY SAY AS GOLD-PLATED CANON.
YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT BLU-RAY? TOUGH........WE THINK IT'S IMPORTANT, SO WE'RE GOING TO SHOVE IT DOWN YOUR THROAT, AND MAKE YOU PAY FOR IT. YOU THINK THE PRICE IS TOO HIGH? TOUGH........YOU SHOULD BE HAPPY IT'S NOT HIGHER, BECAUSE WE PACKED ALOT OF UNTESTED, HIGH-PRICED TECH IN OUR MACHINE, AND YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT.

WHAT'S STRANGELY IRONIC ABOUT ALL OF THIS, IS THEY DON'T SEEM TO REALIZE.....OR CARE......HOW ARROGANT THEY SOUND IN THEIR "ANNOUNCEMENTS". FOR INSTANCE, TO SAY "THE PC ISN'T NECESSARY" IS SO COMPLETELY IGNORANT, THAT IT'S NOT EVEN WORTH ARGUING ABOUT. NOT TO MENTION WHAT THAT MUST SOUND LIKE TO THE PC MANUFACTURERS THEY'RE INTENDING TO PARTNER WITH, ON THE BLU-RAY AND CELL TECH. YEAH.......REAL SMART, 'SONY'. :down:rolleyes:

Meh, Sony has been saying that the PC will die a slow and painful death since the inception of the PS2. It never happened. It's just the saem thing again. The PS3, nor will any other console, ever kill the PC. Sony is just splurting out crap again.

YEAH....THAT'S WHAT I SAID. :confused::up:

Hoookay. Well...call me stupid but I'm most likely going to get the PS3 anyways. Set aside 1 K already, might as well see it through. I didn't know Sony was so...vocal about its self-styled superiority over its Competitors. I've got nothing against either Microsoft or Nintendo but I'm one of those types who stick to what I know. Actually I was a Sega fan from way back, Saturn, Dreamcast etc...but I guess I decided to follow the trend

Plus I love Tekken. Two time local tournament champ son!

Waitwaitwaitwait....

Aren't these the same people who slamed MS for offering an XBOX360 model without a HDD, saying that that would hold back developers because they wouldn't be able to assume that the player has a HDD?

As someone who works at my local Circuit City, I cannot WAIT until I get flooded by PS3 players who bring a PS3 game up to me and ask "Will this run on my PS3? Or is it time to upgrade again?"

The great thing about a game console as opposed to using a PC for gaming is that it's as simple as: Do you have the correct console that the game is made for? Yes? Then you can play it.

But apparently Sony has forgotten this. The problem with upgrading various parts of your system over time means that if you chose NOT to pay the extra money for the upgrades every time, you won't be able to play the next great game for the console.

When I answer my customer with "Unfortunately, you'll need to buy such-and-such upgrade to play this", I'm willing to bet they won't answer me with a shrug and a "Okay. I understand that my PS3 isn't a 'gaming console' and that I should've expected to add more and more costs to my $600 system periodically over time. Where do I check out?"

And if the HDD is the only thing that will be upgraded over time (seeing as how that's the only example Krazy Ken kept mentioning, it might be), then the question is no longer "are they serious????", but instead "how is that any different from buying larger memory cards over time on the previous systems? Way to be innovative!"

Umm...not to act like a smartass but I think we should wait for all three consoles to be released before burning down any buildings. I mean, I really like Nintendo but the Wii's controller...urmm...remote is a bit of a concern for me and the 360's interface, though cool, isn't exactly idiot-proof. Not that I'm saying you guys have no right to hate crazy Ken but looking at reports gossips and so-called insider info for anything to declare your hatred for Sony seems a little harsh. I mean, the PS3 is like what? 5, 6 months away? From a marketting standpoint, the latest we're going to see the PS3 is Christmas and there's plenty of room for improvement and whatnot between now and then. As for the pricing...well...I guess you get what you pay for. Sony does have a number of solid exclusives to their name like Namco and Square Enix and Konami. Sony itself makes pretty good games. I guess that's an incentive for me to get it. My opinion anyway (ducks before the flames start to blaze)

Sony is full of it man, they always have been. Dont get me wrong, I loved PS2 for one game, Socom. I was looking forward to PS3 as well. And to be honest, I might end up getting one, just not at launch. 600 bucks is just too much money for me. I have a life outside of gaming. Payments need to be made, I have credit card bills, insurance, car, house... plus I'm getting married next year so I gotta start saving up. 600 bucks, not counting a game, extra controller, plus their online service, thats just under $1,000. I don't have that kind of money right now.

NOBODY'S "LOOKING" FOR ANYTHING.......'KRAZY KEN' AND CO. PUT IT ALL RIGHT OUT IN PUBLIC, FOR EVERYONE TO SEE/HEAR.

Looking "at" and looking "for" are two different things...THWIP*(?)

I thought that was going to be free ?
Certain aspects of it will be free. I'm not gonna just settle for some watered down version of something though. I would want the whole kabootle ka-bang, if you know what I mean.

Regardless I agree that Sony can be a letdown at times. Well...many a time really. My biggest gripe with them is undoubtedly their online policy but being sucky at most games, maybe it was smarter of me to stick to normal solo play

Funny, I thought their online was awesome.

If they made PS3 400 bucks, I'd get it.
