On a down note, SCE informed us that DVD upscaling was not part of the PS3 multimedia feature set. The Xbox 360 upscales DVDs, so it's surprising to see SCE go without the feature.

I've seen many people here curious as to whether or not the Blu-Ray drive inside the PS3 means it'll upscale regular DVDs, too. Looks like we finally got our answer.

No.

That's okay though, right? I mean, the PS3 isn't about movies anyway...

Actually, ps3 is all about movies.

If it was about the games, you would get a choice. But , and this is what makes me so angry, it's not. The gaming portion is just to draw ''gamers'' into buying a cheap blu ray dvd to get a foothold on the market. It's a cheap blu ray player first, gaming machine second. If you think otherwise, you are fooling yourself.

lol, Horrorfan, that last line was sarcasm. :p

Uh...I knew that :p

LOL seriously I thought you were a sony fan? Because seriously, the **** they come up with is ******ed (and sadly not sarcasm all).

But yeah, sorry bout that guy, egg on my face :p:csad: :o

lmao. I encourage you to read through my game-related post history. I'm most certainly not a Sony fan.

:( I'm heartbroken you thought so little of me :p

I thought it was suspicious...I was like ''this is wrong...Imdaly always seemed like a pretty smart guy before...has krazy ken's gang got to him???'' but Im glad to say not :p

Wondering that myself.

Might as well mention that PS1/PS2 games won't benefit from any graphical upgrade either on the PS3.

It's not a movie machine, but then again, Kutaragi said the PS3 wasn't a gaming machine either.

Must be a George Foreman grill....

The funny thing is before everyone around here loudly proclaimed that upscaled DVD look like crap, now what will they say?

9 hours to come up with an excuse for this, and you come up with that??

And I challenge you to find a single post of mine that ever said anything of the sort.

Oh but then again, with the cables that come with the PS3, up-conversion would not make any difference anyway, I suppose.

It happened during the GT4 debates, and I can't post from work anymore so there goes that! :-)()

Actually, I always thought upscaling looked pretty good. I remember DLing the 480p Superman Returns trailer and stretching it to 720p levels, viewing next to the actual 720p trailer and noticing little difference. With proper compression, it actually upscales quite nicely and barely noticable.

Another reason why I think 360 games should have 480p cinematics just stretched. Screw a second DVD.

I for one can safely say that upscaling is a good thing depending on the hardware. Supposedly blu ray players are/were (were in the sense of multiple players slated to be on the market, instead of the average at best Samsung out now) very good at upscaling. The fact that the PS3 wont upscale will put a dent in the idea that the PS3 can easy replace/do what the standalone blu-ray units do. If they were trying to reach out to the home theater junkies, this certainly is not going to help things, considering that crowd is VERY picky.

COULDN'T SONY ADD UPSCALING LATER WITH A FIRMWARE UPDATE, IS THAT POSSIBLE? :yay:

I never said that. :o

No shock really... SONY want people to buy BR-DVD movies, not regular DVD's.

Hey Mentok, dude where the hell is everybody? Did you guys migrate to another board or what?

I dont know. I have been away from here for a while :(

The Hulk was a better movie then SuperMan Returns, and his most recent video game will be a better game then that crappy game EA is making.
