I know that there are two out there right now but I'm not sure which one to purchase...or for those of you that have one...is it even worth it??

I have never run into an issue with the PS3 and its cooling. Id save my money

your ps3 hasnt froze once? how long have you had it?

since last July. It froze when I had Assasins Creed but that game had a ton of bugs before it was patched up. It was the game, not the system which was attributed to that

well mine has frozen during gameplay but it also occasionally freezes when using the internet browser.

that all cant be related to overheating?

The entire concept of an intercooler is ******ed. And the PS3 does run hot, so hot in fact that the metal casing around the display model we have could burn you if you put your hand there long enough, and that I had a friend who actually puts his on his windowsill during the summer when he's playing, as it makes his entire room hot. But I've talked to the Sony rep that comes to my store about this, and they say that the running hot is normal, and shouldnt adversely affect playing.

Yeah, My room was kept very warm during the winter when my PS3 was running :) It was kindof nice...

Steer clear of these stupid things altogether, they're worthless. The PS3 is already designed to cool itself perfectly, and there have been very few reports of it ever overheating. The reason it "runs hot" is because the system is pumping out the hot air to keep the innards cool, not because it's over heating. The only reason these "intercoolers" exist is because the Red Rings of Death on Xbox 360 sent consumers into a panic, and opportunistic peripheral makers saw a chance to cash in.

They do not make your system cool more efficiently, and if anything, they'll just wear out the fans that are already in the system because it will force them to spin faster. They're a cheap gimmick, and in the long run they could actually make your system cool less efficiently.

I absolutely love that they make intercoolers for the Wii, too, as if THAT'S going to overheat! lmao. I laugh every time we get one in at work.

The intercoolers are known to actually do more damage than help. The ones that are powered using the USB slots on the consoles actually divert power needed to safely run the system to the intercooler thus sometimes actually damaging the systems which aren't getting the proper power to run.

Don't buy/use those coolers. Just keep your systems well ventilated. That's it.

One of my friends actually had an xbox 360 intercooler fry his system. It was fine, he bought one of those as the guy from gamestop talked him into it, plugged it in, and about 10 minutes later got red rings.

BTW the PS3 freezing isn't always from overheating. I've yet to have it freeze during gameplay, but I have had it freeze a few times while internet browsing including during remote play. Most of the time I can still hold the PS button down on my controller and select "Turn off system". IMO that comes from memory limitations. Opening too may windows on memory intensive sites can and will freeze things up. Even with 2 GB's of ram on my comp opening too many windows slow things down, I think the PS3 just kinda locks up rather than trying to run it all which might actually keep your PS3 healthier in the long run. As it's better to stop loading something that's pushing a system past it's limits than to keep trying.

As for coolers like said above I've heard they can adversely affect your system rather than help it. The PS3 will be fine as long as you keep your room at a good temp and keep your PS3 in an area where it's well ventilated, the same can be said for any electronics that run at hot like a comp tho.

When the PS3 freezes, 99% of the time it's software related, not because of overheating.
