• Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version.

PS3 patch on day one

My computer refused to view 1up. Ever. What is it with that sodding site?

Presumably it's the same thing that IGN put a story up about too?

PS3 to be Patched on Day One
System software update coming on launch day.

Sony Computer Entertainment is not hanging around with the PS3 updates. From day one, anyone connecting their shiny new PlayStation 3 to the Internet will be invited to download a system software update to version 1.10. The update will unlock all services on PlayStation Network for customers to get stuck into from 7am (JST) on November 11.
Another update is planned for late November, and will include a version update for PSP, with enhanced security features and improvements in the way the PSP can connect with the PS3. This will also include the ability to download PSP-specific games from PlayStation Store on the PS3, and transfer them to the PSP. It will also unlock the "remote play" feature that allows users to control the PS3 via their PSP remotely. This does not work with PS3s that are not fitted with the Wireless LAN adaptor, however. The update will bring the PSP system software version number up to 3.00.

There's nothing frightening about this. Unless you're frightened by them continually adding to and expanding on the PS3 OS just like how they've done an amazing job updating and adding features to the PSP. Since they locked the system down for manufacturing they've continued to work on it on the software side, as the article clearly states. So having the patch for these features on day 1 isn't a firghtening thing, it's a good thing, would you rather it was a huge stability patch? Then your fear could be justified.

You're talking like there was some huge glitch that would destroy the BD data when read by the laser or something.

I cant ever get on IUP either. I always wondered if it was just me

No, 1UP is incredibly buggy for me too, and my iBook simply refuses to load it most days.

There's something frightening about it, the system is SHIPPING and the basics aren't locked down. I get the advantage of this, but I'm also thinking of the TON of people who are getting one that don't have a broadband net connection.

I've already been scared pissless by the "heat sensitive button" ******ation, now they tell me it DEFINITELY needs an upfront fix. I'm not calling it a defect, but this may be the first console I've ever had that is immediately "not right" in some way.

And....well, *I* wouldn't talk about PSP patches being a good thing, but to me the primary point of the PSP is for homebrewing.

.......

I'm dreading the PS3 more and more, the more I learn about it. :(

I just dread the price...I guess its gonna be at least a year from now before I get one. I think I will at least wait till Gran Tourismo comes out.

Dont worry, 1up sucks anyway :(

After some time with the PS3 I am actually pretty excited about it now.... Well, in 2 or so years when I get one anyway :)

My biggest dread is that heat sensitive power button. What happens when THAT stops working? On/off switches have been WAY too ineffective in the last few decades. Way to overcomplicate the plumbing, Sony. I'm sure it was cheaper than a switch, too! :whatever:

Pretty sure the PS3 power and eject button are touch sensitive in much the same way the IPOD wheel is.

Technically it is a heat sensitive button... Technically :o. You still have to press the small rise where the button is, thus its also technically a basic button.

The patch is for the nuclear missles being launched when PS3 hits. Just like Skynet...

You're kidding.

Please tell me your kidding.

I used to give people the benefit of the doubt here and just assume they were joking/being sarcastic whenever they said something stupid...I can't bring myself to do that any more :(

Anyways, I don't really know what this thread is on about. Patches are good. They fix things. I'd rather Sony fix problems on day one instead of waiting several weeks to do it.

Being the voice of reason here though (although I don't plan on getting a Ps3, but an Xbox 360 and Wii instead), thats a few games out of a vast library. There were very few Xbox games that would play on the 360, and most needed a patch even if they were.

If you think that a heat sensitive button is a better idea than a simple on/off button as electronics have used forever, well....that's YOUR problem, but unfortunately it will likely become everyone's. There's no point to making it heat sensitive.

I actually sort of agree with you on this one. A simple button or switch has always been what has been used in the industry.
