Ps5 vs. Series X/S: Which next gen system are you leaning more towards?

Which next gen console are you leaning more towards purchasing?

I wish every console would be fully BC with every previous iteration. That way as it stands you would only need 3 consoles along with your pc to play everything (aside from discontinued lines made by companies like Sega of course). BC is so important to me as it makes a next gen console worth buying even if the next gen doesn’t blow me away as I can trade in my old gen console for a guaranteed improvement. Something that can do everything my old one can and more, regardless of how good or not its next gen capabilities are. If it can improve those older titles, all the better. I have particular nostalgia for PS1 and SNES.

The other thing that I really like having the luxury of being able to do is to be able to play every entry in a franchise on one machine. If I had everything digitally I would do that often. I don’t mean necessarily replaying the whole franchise but doing a similar sample from every game and watching how they improved over time.

yeah. it seems like it is shaping up to be PS5's speed vs Series X's power.

and I agree that, based on the specs, Sony could be aiming for a lower price point - I could see $400 for PS5. and $500 for Series X.

The lower price point would probably help Sony sell more consoles, but even at $500, I'd still get the Series X first.

If Series X is at $600, though, then I may hold off on getting a next gen console right away and wait till they come down in price. I'll just hang on to my X1 and PS4 longer.

a $600 console + another $100-$200 or more for the ssd expansion is a tough sell, for me.

as I said in the other thread, the ssd expansion will be a hidden cost for both consoles.
$600 is too expensive for mass penetration. It’s better to take a loss or a bigger loss and get it down to $499 and try and make back any loss through increased monthly subscriptions.

being able to play every franchise on one machine would be nice, even if it was digitally.

just look at the Final Fantasy franchise and how many consoles that is spread across.

yeah, at $600, you'd be pricing yourself out of the market. especially when you add in the cost of games and accessories, now including the ssd expansions which probably won't be cheap.

I have a few Playstation 1 games I'd like to play again. If only I had a machine capable of playing them that was not buying an over-priced used Playstation of dubious working status.

It’s a thing I’ve always loved doing. I don’t necessarily have the time to replay whole franchises but when that nostalgia bug hits me I want to be able to do get a flavour of all the games in a short time.

Yeah FF is all over the place!

Yeah, you have to price within the range that the majority of your user base can afford and are willing to pay. Just because you’ve put a space shuttle engine in your new console that doesn’t mean people are going to pay 2 grand for it. (unless they can sell it for parts and make a profit lol)

I have the consoles and all, but its annoying to have to plug in them and all that...its a tedious work that full BC could prevent.

I mean it doesnt break the PS5s neck to me because in the end it is a next gen console, but in the year 2020 not to have it...looks bad.
Indie games have better technic than some psx games, we can have emulators and stuff on a smartphones...but not on a huge next gen console that could cost around 500€?

I get that ps3-4 games could be a problem because they need to be installed and all, but psx and ps2 are on disc games.
Being able to play the games of all 5 generations in one console would be so great.
They build those consoles based on the past, on the knowledge and history of it...but let us not experience it on that generation? Doesnt look good.

I've never held on to multiple and old consoles as I just sale/trade them in for a new gen console but I sure wish I did sometimes.

Xbox has BC but you need a credit card to digitally purchase them and even to download free games during deals. I don't like using my card on consoles and so I can only get BC games on gamepass. Going into next gen, hopefully they add more bigger series x titles as well as original xbox-one

I want my full PlayStation 1 catalogue ready to play at any time as that was one of my all-time favourite eras in gaming when tech was changing so fast. I don’t know if there is any way that the PS5 can later be adapted to do that but if not I hold out hope that a mid-gen refresh or Ps6 at least will do that.

The PlayStation has such a rich history that they should really take full advantage of that.

Absolutly.
They have one generation head start ahead of the XBOX and especially the PSX had such great games.
I always hear people say that barely any xbox players use the feature, even if that is true...xbox isnt playstation.
I heard so many people talk about BC and are sad that it wont be happening, so at least on the PS there seems to be a larger amount of people interested in the feature.

If there are technical troubles or so then i can understand sony not doing it, if they simply cant do it for whatever reason, then so be it.
But at least communicate with us, tell us the why.
The way sony has adressed this so far, doesnt help anybody.

I just don’t think some of the execs are understanding the attraction of BC of an entire gaming collection on one line of consoles across a lifetime. I haven’t read many of my comics for years, some decades. I haven’t checked all my historical photos for years. As mentioned before the same goes for my film and music collection. I consume a tiny portion of them but it’s not only the ones getting chosen to watch that are adding value, it’s having the choice to view any of them whenever I want that is. They’re all contributing, even the ones that never get used. Them trying to solely equate usage with benefit derived is fundamentally flawed. When someone has decades of bc games on your line of consoles it creates serious long term loyalty.

MS seems to be putting more of an emphasis on backward and forward compatibility across gens. not just for games, but also accessories. Like, the X1 controller can work on Series X and vice versa.

it does create long term loyalty and it helps keep you in that ecosystem.

Yeah, it’s a big plus. Sony have more history and better exclusives so they are the ones who would have had even more to gain by doing it. Has Nintendo got any plans on this front?

Sadly, Nintendo is behind on this front, too. I think the closest thing you can get is through their online subscription service that gets you some free NES games. And maybe some free SNES games, though I'm not sure about that.

I think on the Wii U they at least had their Virtual Shop where you could buy digital copies of classic NES and SNES games. I was really hoping they would carry that over to the Switch, but alas, almost 3 years later, they haven't done that.

It's a shame because there are some classic NES and SNES games that I'd love to play. Even some N64 games.

Or else, I guess you can buy those standalone "mini" NES and SNES consoles they released recently, if you can still find them. Or the "mini" Playstation that Sony released.

But those make me madder because that means Sony and Nintendo could technically rerelease those classic games for their current consoles. Just make a disc called "Playstation Classics Vol 1." Then do Vol 2 and so on.

But instead, they force us to buy those mini consoles, which means another device we have to hook up (with wired controllers, too). and those mini consoles are closed systems that you can't add more games to.

If they aren't going to give us true, full BC on their current consoles, at least rerelease your classic games as Collections or whatever so we can play them on the current consoles, and so generations both new and old can enjoy your classic games.

We've had Atari and Midway collections. Street Fighter Collections. Mega Man Collections. so don't tell me it can't be done.

This is terrible.

I most wanted all SNES (my favourite Nintendo console) titles to be available on the latest Nintendo console, along with N64 as I never owned that one.

yeah, one of the reasons why I bought a Switch was because I anticipated they would carry over the Virtual Console with all the classic NES/SNES games.

alas........I was mistaken............:(

It’s really frustrating for me! All I want from Sony and Nintendo is to have BC for all their classics (and keep making their core exclusives to the highest standard possible). That is all it would take for me to buy every new console either of them make (and trade in the old ones each time). I’m using pc for multiplat now but am still open to buying every new console if they just do this.

Gamecube was my last Nintendo. I'd geek out and instantly get Switch or the next console if it had BC for NES-Gamecube!

It’s so weird. Xbox has the least to gain and is doing it. Sony have much more to gain and are doing it quite piecemeal. Nintendo probably has the most of all to gain and are doing the least. I don’t understand really. Nintendo and Sony would have the most loyal supporters so you want to lock that in for life. Like for me it’s not all that easy to switch certain platforms (eg mobile and computer) due to how much content I’ve got on each that is theoretically either there for me for good or gone if I switch completely.
