Public Misconceptions about Watchmen...

I remember when we first got the character banners at the theater I work at there was a lot of that "is that Robert Downey Jr?" thing. It didn't seem to last that long, there is a girl who is really into Grey's anatomy who set most people straight.

Me, I didn't hear too much misconceptions before hand. I read the book for the first time a few years ago. It's really one of the first times I've ever read a book because I was interested in the book itself and not because of a movie version.

For a long time I was the only person I knew who had read the book. I was excited about seeing the trailer back in July whereas no one else had ever heard of it. But over the last few months a lot of people I know, including mostly ones I work with, have read the GN. We all had a screening before the movie came out and most people seemed to like it, but it was definitley confusing for those who didn't read the book.

I didn't really go around explaining the movie all that much to people though because I didn't want to spoil it for anyone. The twists and turns of the story really should be expirienced first hand and for that reason I always thought it was kind of a good thing that so many people didn't have any idea what it was actually like. After all, the whole premise is supposed to take familiar superhero archetypes and distort the expectations.

I was hoping a lot of people would have an open mind and be pleasantly surprised by seeing a movie that ended up being completley different than what they thought it would be. Sadly though, a lot of what I've heard about people who didn't read the book was more negative.

I don't like ripping on other people's taste in movies, but I think more people should go to movies that aren't neccesarily made for their demographic and take chances, I know its hard with such high ticket prices but being surprised by a movie is the best. The Imax sold out all day but the other showings were largely empty.

Not all, but generally this really is a movie for the fans.

The big issue is that it's a movie that asks the viewers to really pay attention to what's going on.....I felt the same way after watching the film as I did when I first finished the book, I was mentally exhausted

I don't want to come off as pretentious, but more people need to see movies that require them to pay attention. There are some movies with a lot of simple little things going on, but people don't know to pay attention to them, and they're shocked when the revelations at the end of the film seem to "come out of nowhere." You ever go to the movies with a friend, only to end up answering all of their questions as you walk out of the theatre? I'm not talking about just Watchmen or any other movie based off of something you've read. I mean the movie could be just as new to you as it is to them, but a lot of dialogue flew right past them for no real reason.

It's because people have no attention span anymore.

It should be mandatory for everyone to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey without a bathroom break once in their lives. Once you sit through that movie, you can sit through anything.

"Ugh, Watchmen is taking so looonngg!"
"Are you kidding? At least it has dialogue."

That's a good idea (though I've never seen it). I watch lots of 2.30+ movies, so I'm used to it. Watchmen was no problem. Hell, I've watched one of the LOTR extended editions in one sitting with only1-2 restroom breaks (but I was drinking soda while watching it, soo...:o).

One of my girlfriend's co-workers took their children , who are both under the age of 12 , to see this movie. They were actually shocked and upset by what was in the movie. So basically nevermind people not being able to pay attention during the movie because several can't even look at the rating .

It's people like that that caused the demon known as "Batman and Robin". :csad:

"I want to complain! This R-rated movie isn't appropriate for my children!" :hehe:

And this is why Witch Mountain will be number one this weekend.

I think it's up to us, then, to keep Watchmen at number 1.

I'm not spending money on going to the movies again. Hell, I bought a matinee ticket the first time.

Do what the rest of us black folks do, get that **** on bootleg.

"The Rock is acting all silly... aha-ha-ha!! Gimme more Brondo!"

I wouldn't be shocked. But I knew this film had an uphill battle...
