Public Misconceptions about Watchmen...

well, it depends which theater you go to.

In most cases, any theater in Hollywood will have fairly smart film goers. Well, it's Hollywood so it makes sense.

I've been to the theater in Irvine (in Orange County) and the film goers are smart too. However, when I go to...a more ghetto theater, then it's a different story.

^Ghetto...? :whatever: No smart people in poorer places I guess.

People can be so funny. I mean to have the actual BATMAN AND IRON MAN in one movie? How old are they?

It's amazing that..with the internet where you can get instant info right away, people can be so ignorant. Not just on comics, but on life in general.

I ran into someone who didn't even know comic books were still being made/published. :o

That's just sad....:csad: I mean, did they not ever step into a book store? As small as my local mall's Waldenbooks is, they still have a comic/GN section...

Watchmen's won't have the mass familiarity that Dark Knight does. Not right off the bat, at least. Everyone knows who Batman is. I think larger audiences and demographics will start flocking as word of mouth spreads about the film once it's released. Think of all the conversations we've had regarding the ethical, political, and social issues within the comic. Now imagine how everyone who's never heard of the comic will be having those same discussions after seeing the film.

I'm the kind of selfish *****e who likes my movie viewing perfect, no loud noises, no cell phones, no "All hell naw...Blue Wang!!11!!"...

I have a feeling I need to see Watchmen on a Sunday afternoon...lol.

i love it when the theater is packed. i like hearing the reactions from the crowd, as long as its not annoying.

I work at a movie theater so I hear tons of funny questions.

"Is this a comedy or something?"
"Those costumes look cheap."
"Mommy, look at her underwear."
"Oh! I wanna see that!" - "That's not for kids... that's for grownups." - "But mommy I wanna see it." - "Ok, fine."

it never ends

When I went to see Punisher War Zone opening weekend this dude brought his (I would assume) two young children with him. One was a boy and the other was a girl and they couldn't have been no older than 5 or 6 years old. Me personally, I don't believe in bringing any kids that young to a R-rated movie.

Anyway, I had never heard of the Watchmen until I saw the first trailer with TDK. I went out and bought the graphic novel and read it and I'm excited to see this movie. I'm gonna watch it on IMAX. Which reminds me, who else gonna watch it on IMAX?

Even with PG-13 movies, parents are bringing in age inappropriate children. One of the Dark Knight showings I went to, there was a couple who brought in a baby in a stroller.....*a baby in a stroller*!! The child was good till about 5 minutes in, then it was just one big waaaaaahhhhh :waa:fest. I was like :facepalm

You know, I have never seen a movie in an IMAX theater. I don't even know if there is one close to where I live! :o:o

That's why I love the comfort of watching a movie on DVD at my house. The only thing though, is watching a film for the first time on your TV set does not simply compare the feeling when you watch it in the theater. Not even close.

I saw TDK twice; the first time I saw it it was dead silence!! It was PERFECT. No chatter, no cellphones ringing, text messaging, etc. I couldn't have asked for more. And it wasn't at a fancy smancy theater, just you're average one. Second time I saw it was in Manhattan in a much bigger theater, and a young couple next to me brought their 2 year old daughter. :facepalm

OK. So she was cute, but she kept on making these kiddie gibberish noises. I saw the movie with my sister, who didn't see it yet (this was about 2 or 3 weeks after the movie came out). I kept on thinking, please don't let this child ruin it for her + the other movie goers who may have not seen it either. Please please don't ruin the good parts. She kept on running up and down the theater steps during the first 5-10 minutes of the movie, again with the gibberish sounds, and then would hop back on her mom's lap and sit still for a few seconds. I'll never forget when a man a few seats in front to the left of me turned around and threw his hands in the air like COME THE #$%$ ON! The father just shrugged. Eventually they left and took her out the theater.

Who takes their 2 yr old to see a movie, much less a PG-13 one?

Me too.

So many people in one room still aggravates me, still. I mean, just breathing and there's already too much noise for me :meanie:

I love how the thread had the required "oh noez teh i hate teh poserzs" convo already.

I got these statements from my cousin:

"It says it's the most celebrated graphic novel of all time but how come I've never heard of it? I mean I know about X-Men and Batman but..."

"What powers do the Watchmen have?"

"So are those blue guys supposed to be the most powerful? Are they aliens or something?"

(Upon seeing Nite-Owl II pop on screen?)
"Wait...is that Batman?"

When I was watching that Spike TV footage when shots of Ozymandias came up my sister asked...

"So is that sinister dude the bad guy?"

I paused and replied:

"Well, there aren't actually any villains in Watchmen. I mean...you've seen Hancock right?"

Not all was terrible from the reception of the trailer of those who were uninitiated. My friend Owen and I have been trying to make my best friend Naomi read Watchmen as long as I've known her. She is actually a huge comic aficionado, but has this disdain for Alan Moore who she considered "a pompous ******* who is overly obsessed with rape and opiates and really needs to let Marvel and DC go for **** they pulled decades ago. He also needs to cut that nasty beard which is probably nesting some chicks."

Upon showing her Watchmen the first time, she complained about the artwork and closed it within the middle of the first chapter because it was "too real" and unimaginative, then blew up upon us when we rebutted with you mean "too serious" which she and her huge collection of Vertigo/Fantasgraphics and Independent titles took extreme offense to.

Years passed. When we got into an advanced screening of The Dark Knight and the gargantuan IMAX screen flashed THE MOST CELBEBRATED GRAPHIC NOVEL OF ALL TIME, she asked me, "Steven what is this? It looks very interesting."

She then quit her Alan Moore *****ing and finally read it after all those years. It is now one of her favorite books and has the entirety of Watchmaker memorized by heart. (Dr. Manhattan is her favorite character. Even when she hated Watchmen for no reason she admitted she loved the concept of "Mister Manhattan" and could relate to his cold distance, solitude and confusion over being in two places at once.)

"Oh! I wanna see that!" - "That's not for kids... that's for grownups." - "But mommy I wanna see it." - "Ok, fine."

If I see any children at all in the theater I'm going to walk up to the parents and ask them several questions:

"Do you want your child to see an attempted rape?"

"Do you want your child to see a man who's naked for most of the movie?"

"Do you want your child to ask you questions about what impotence is?"

And so on and so forth. I've seriously thought about doing this before with other Rated R movies, but this time I am actually going to do it.

^I might do that too. why do parents even do that? it makes nos ense. the movie is rated R, and you can clearly see what it's rated R for. do they bring their annoying bastard children in for the sole purpose of trying to ruin it for everybody?

Around me, people are too afraid to make fun of it at this point because they have picked up that they will look like huge tool bags. A lot of people I know either have read or are in some way familiar with Watchmen, and so the ones who aren't are keeping their mouths shut because they don't want to sound like *****es.

Hopefully it will stay that way. The fans are doing most of the job marketing wise, I think. As long as you keep talking about it, and keep correcting people, the message gets sent a long to take this film seriously.

i think it will help the B.O. if people think its RDJ, people will say, "oh its like a ironman movie lets go and see it", i think there should be more of the comedian in the tv spots/bus posters/ ect.

oh no :csad: we need a comic inquisition :hehe:

Would that be like spanish Inquistion, but I don't think people would espect that.

imagespython-spanish-inquisition-chances-small.jpg

'THAT'S BECAUSE, NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!!!'

Yeah, it's amazing how some people are.

I mean, when I'm a parent, I'll do the research on a movie. It's not hard.

I just had this image of some kid saying, "Why is Ironman raping that girl?" hahaha, that would be hysterical.

Yes, it is necessary. Maybe they should hand out a form/questionnaire with these questions while people wait in line.

You do work at the theatre right?

I don't even consider this an exaggeration, Most people now days don't give a **** about anyone but themselves. Too many people think the world revolves around them and they can do whatever they want. Oh yeah, and a number of times when anyone stops them from being a moron and causes them embarrasment...they just try to sue.

They're like 15. These are the kind of people with massive egos who diss others with hobbies, ei. me and comics, yet they have their own like music and taking gay showers with each other. That's why I stick to people in the know, and that understand when I tell them that Batman and Iron Man are not this ****ing movie.

See, these are the types of people I am worried about getting stuck with. 'Dude, wtf is this crap? I thought there were zombies in this movie!1!' :o
I would hate to get kicked out of the movie because I had to kick someone in the teeth, haha!

Don't worry, it would be worth it, and the smart people in the audience will probably cheer you on.:hehe:
