why did bruce take in dick after his parents had died? was it because he could relate to the pain dick was feeling or was it because he intended him to become his protege?

Because he could relate to what he was going through. It was totally by accident that Dick figured out that he was Batman. In All-Star though, not in continuity, it would seem to be the other way, where he had been watching him even before his parents were dead because he thought he needed a partner/eventual replacement.
