I have some questions about the Spider-Man comic books. I apoligize, but I know very little about the Spider-Man comics, but I am trying to learn before the film to give me an idea of what to expect in the third film.....

1. What issues does Gwen Stacey appear in and what role does she play in the comics?? Will it be the same in the film?

2. The first appearance of the black suit was in the secret wars, but what is the first issue of the black suit in the comics? 298? 299? or 300?

3. When the writers of the comics made Spider-Man have the black suit, did they always know that the suit would become evil or was that a later thought?

4. What is so special about Amazing SM #300??

5. What issue does the black suit detach itself from Peter and get on Brock?

6. Was Eddie Brock a normal character in the comics before the black suit storyline or was he created just for the sole purpose of the Venom villain?

7. When Spider-Man first got rid of the suit and it went on Brock to become Venom, was there any more storylines after that in the comics where the suit went back on Peter????

8. Gwen Stacey and Peter dated before MJ or after MJ??? Or did he cheat on MJ like whats about to happen in the third film???

9. Did the symbiote attach itself to Peter Parker or did it attach itself to Peter Parker when he had the Spider-Man suit on?

10. What issue does the space ship crash land that is carrying the symbiote?

11. Could someone please explain a BRIEF description of how Carnage fits into the symbiote storyline?

12. How big of a character was Sandman in the comics? Was he a fan favorite?

13. How does Spider-Man defeat Sandman in the comics?

THANKS GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1) is first showed up in ASM # 31. she was peter's grielfriend who was killed in a fight with the first Green Goblin. problly not.

2) Amazing Spider-Man #252 (alien symbiote)......Amazing Spider-Man #298 (as Venom)

3) I think they did. the suit triggered his spider sense right before it bonded with him.

4) first fight with Venom

5) not sure but i would guess ASM 297 or 298

6) he was a normal character for a bit before he became Venom.

7) not sure

8) dated before

9) he had the suit on but it had been damage

10) doesn't happen in the comics

11) Carnage was once serial killer Cletus Kasady, and became Carnage after merging with the offspring of the alien symbiote called Venom during a prison breakout.

12) he first showed up in ASM # 4 i guess he was big in his day. i've always liked him but i don't know about anyone else.

13) lots of ways but the first time it was a vacuum cleaner

Water makes Sandman able to hit and hurts him.

7.) simple answer = yes. don't know whether peter attaches with venom again in the normal continuity universe (referred to as 616 universe) but i know it tries, and it succeeds in the spider-girl books (thats different continuity, set 15years in the future where his daughter has taken over), calling itself spider-venom (unfortunately after it started calling itself venom no writer could come up with any more original names for other hosts).
i also know there was an incident with spider-man and carnage (though the spider-man at the time was, i believe, ben reilly -- peter parkers clone). Also the venom symbiote is in the last ish of the current spider-girl comic, attached to an osborn (norman's grandson- but he's a goody :)), in spider-girl #100, and is currently (in normal continuity -- i.e. spider-mans world) attached to the man that used to be the scorpion - mac gargan. and some version of it has even attached itself to wolverine, among others!

in fact pick up "beyond!" #1 for a shocking venom/spider-man fight, out now. i recommend it:)

1. She first appears in Amazing Spider-Man 31, and pretty much appears in every issue until ASM 121 where she is killed by the Green Goblin. She and her death are extremely important to the Spider-Man mytho's, second only to the death of Uncle Ben.

2. Amazing Spider-Man 252 Spider-Man first appears in his new suit, later in Secret Wars 8, how Spidey got the suit is revealed

3. The suit was mainly generated to create publicity over the previously Secret Wars miniseries, later it was decided to remove it from Spidey and to use it as a later plot point. (Venom was originally supposed to be a female)

4. Peter and Venom fight for the very first time, it is described as the first full appearance of Venom, plus it was an aniversary issue and it was illustrated by Todd McFarlene. Worth about $100 (My first actual comic book btw )

5. Peter uses a churchs bell tower to remove it, it waits there until Eddie Brock comes to ask forgiveness for ending his life later that night. The suit senses his hatred of Spider-Man, and bonds with him

6. Eddie Brock never appeared before ASM 300, he was given a backstory that placed him in the middle of one of Spidey's major arcs

7. The suit has attempted to bond with Peter, most specifically in ASM 317. For years seperating Brock from the suit meant death for both of them, however he later survives an attempt to do so, and thus it can go on and off now.

8. Peter did go out with MJ before Gwen, however Gwen and MJ essentially change places personallity wise and Peter starts to date her. When Gwen dies, Peter and MJ grow closer, and MJ becomes a much more rounded character

9. When it joined Peter in Secret Wars 8 is pretty much destroyed his old suit and became his actual costume.

10. Didn't happen, thats from the Animated Series

11. Marvel wanted to make some more money off of the extremely popular villian Venom, so they created another symbiote, which was essentially the child of the Venom symbiote, and left behind after Brock escaped prison. It bonded with a serial killer name Cletus Cassidy. He's supposedly stronger than Venom and Spidey combined, and more resistant to Venom's weaknesses.

12. He fought Spidey only a couple of times during the Ditko era, and than went to Fantastic Four to become part of the Frightful Four. He later returned, wearing an extremely ugly costume, however he became a good guy after a near death experience with Hydro Man, and even became an Avenger at one point. Marvel later had The Wizard revert the Sandman into a villian again. And he has reverted to a typical thug type villian. Hopefully he gets some good stories in thanks to the new movie.

13. He beat him the first time with a vacum, however he has used also used water (Mud) and heat (Glass) to beat him

why am i the only person who thinks Carnage is WAY better than venom?

I'd like to make 2 little points about these so they are not misleading...

7. MJ and Pete went out a couple times on casual dates, it was nothing serious at all like in the movies. When Pete and Gwen went out, it was very serious. He would have probably married her. Later after she died Pete and MJ got gradually closer, and it took a long time before they were close enough to think about marraige. Actually I think it took 3 proposals by Peter for MJ to finally say yes and marry him.

13. The vaccum cleaner would not happen to Sandman anymore. He could easily bust out of it, he is strong enough to press 85 tons. That was early Spidey before Sandman had been seriously thought out about what he was capable of. Now Sandman is extemely dangerous.

1. What issues does Gwen Stacey appear in and what role does she play in the comics?? Will it be the same in the film?

That's impossible. They have already gone in a different direction in the film. I think smartly so, but judge for yourself... Here is how the saga of Peter, Gwen and MJ went down in the comics...

When Peter went off to college he met Gwen and Harry for the first time. He was distracted by Aunt May's illness and as a result, his classmates initially thought he was stuck up... a science snob.

Gwen was a high school beauty queen, and was probably used to getting any guy she wanted. She was quite offended by Peter's seeming disinterest, but it probably served to stimulate her own.

When Aunt May got better Peter started noticing Gwen... and they had this friction/attraction thing going on with each other for awhile.

In the meantime, Aunt May and MJ's Aunt Anna had been trying for months to set Peter up with MJ. Peter avoided it as long as possible, but finally gave in to the inevitable.

When Peter first set eyes on MJ, he was totally blown away... he was flustered and speechless. MJ uttered her famous line... "Face it Tiger, you just hit the jackpot!"

WhyYouMaryJanePart1A.jpg

Later that night (after a dinner that Peter just picked at... he was so shook up...) they hear a news report that the Rhino is downtown. Just as he is trying to think of a way to get away, MJ says, let's go see what's happening! And as they zip off on his motorcycle he muses that this is just the kind of girlfriend a busy Spider-Man needs! (Prophetic). As for MJ, she was excited that Spider-Man showed up...

Peter made plans to see her again, but of course, in his line of "work" social engagements were hard to keep. MJ's attitude at the time was, there is much fun to be had, and I'm not waiting round for you. Peter was left with the impression that "MJ is as pretty as a pumkin seed, and just as shallow..." His attentions turn to Gwen.

We later find out that MJ's happy-go-lucky, fun, fun fun personna was her way of escaping a troubled and abusive home life. Her mother and sister had given up their "dreams" to marry prince charmings, who actually turned out to be jerks. After they had kids, the jerks abandoned them. MJ was determined to not make the same mistake... She had goals and was afraid of getting too close... especially to someone like Peter, who she was really attracted to. Too dangerous. We also later find out that she suspected early on that he was Spider-Man.

But at this point in time Peter and Gwen go on to fall in love. It's sweet, first love. Gwen was a student, interested in science, and devoted to her father, ex police captain George Stacy. (There's more to this story that would really be worth your while to read. Try getting the Essentials.)

Peter and Gwen had their misunderstandings and drama, but on the surface, they were on their way to getting married. I say that because Gwen was quite emotional and had real problems with Spider-Man. She blamed him for her father's death and Peter never told her "the truth." He might have eventually... but, their story was cut short. Gwen was kidnapped by the Green Goblin and dropped off a bridge. Spidey tried to save her... and failed. It was tragic. (Peter's life has it's share.)

But in the aftermath of Gwen's death we see a glimpse of Mary Jane's true depth of character, and her feelings for Peter. She is there for him and really keeps him from totally losing it.

WhyYouMaryJanePart2B.jpg

In time Peter falls for MJ and proposes to her. She tells him she loves him, but she's not ready for marriage... Turns out that she DID know he was Spider-Man... and she knew he was not being totally open with her. It was going to take her awhile... to chase her career and get over her fears... She leaves town.

Peter dates around a bit... but it's pretty superfical. Spider-Man has a mostly carnal fling with the Black Cat, and briefly imagines what it would be like to marry her. Seems Peter is the marrying kind. (No matter what propaganda Marvel's editor is dishing these days.)

MJ eventually returned and dispite their denials and Spider-Man's disfunctional relationship with the Black Cat, the attraction was still there. They developed a true friendship. MJ admitted to him that she knew he was Spider-Man and that further bonded them. He, at last, had a confidant.

Peter proposed AGAIN, but his timing was lousy. MJ was in the middle of a family crisis. But instead of sulking at the rejection... Peter goes to be with MJ and lends her moral support as she finally resolves some issues. While there, Spider-Man is attacked by a "Spider-slayer" and MJ shows some real guts by going after it, and distracting it long enough to literally save Spidey's neck.

Later... at the airport they reflect over how good they are for each other... MJ says she done running.. she finally says YES, I'll marry you.

whyyoumj57.jpg

That was in 1987... They have been through some ups and downs (as writers have tried various convoluted ways of making Peter younger and single again.) But Peter remains crazy in love with his wife and they would pretty much lay down their lives for each other.

8. Gwen Stacey and Peter dated before MJ or after MJ??? Or did he cheat on MJ like whats about to happen in the third film???
There is NO WAY that Peter would cheat on MJ in the comics. I think the implication in the movie is that he is under a dark influence... But I can't believe there is more than a flirtation... there are going to be kids at this movie, for crying out loud!

If you really want to know MORE than you ever thought possible about Peter's love life, here's a great article:

http://www.spideykicksbutt.com/WhyYouMaryJane/WhyYouMaryJanePart1.html

by the way, if you want to know most of these questions, buy the 40 years of spider-man on CD-ROM, over 500 comics cover to cover(it's really only 501 comics). i got it for 50 bucks last year and it may cost cheaper now. oh, and IT'S IN COLOR!. it's a really good read. only drawback is that it's on a computer and that can hurt your eyes or neck and whatnot.

^^^^
Also the later issues are part of some multi-part arcs which are not included. Still, it's a good recommendation.

Terrific summary, Captivated.

And another  for not mentioning
how "Sins Past" fits into all of this. As far as Spidey fans are concerned, that story NEVER HAPPENED.

yeah, the crossover parts really pissed me off, but if you have the net you could look it up or just TRY to find the back issues

That post is a thing of beauty and a joy forever.

I think we should direct anyone towards Captivated in the future, should they have any questions about Spidey's love life ;)

cap, gwen or MJ... who's better for pete? you dont hat to answer

Thanks, Doc Ock, Stillanerd... I did kinda get on a roll there, huh. ;)

I was glad to see someone from the dazed and confused movie forum asking questions about the source material. :)

P.S. -- I changed a couple of pics, as they were HUGE, and I hate scrolling. Hope it's easier to read now.

I was watching the special features on the Spider-Man 2 DVD, and in it they showed this panel along with the rest. I noticed in the one to the left of it Pete's face was real red, then when I bought the comic last week his face didn't look like the one they showed in the DVD. Is this regarded as the first appearance of MJ?:)

It's considered her firt appearance because it's the first time we see her face.

She first appears in ASM #25 where her face is obscured.
