Why do people get so defensive when it comes to films?

Person A will say how much they love a movie, then person B will say they didn't like it along with some examples, then person A will act like person B just attacked them personally?

If I love a film and someone else hates it, it just doesn't effect me. I'll correct someone if they give a wrong fact on something, but other than that it doesn't bother me if someone hates the films I like.

Even the little things people do like ''I like this film and I don't care what people think'' or ''I'm checking this film out, I DON'T care what you or anyone else thinks''. It just confuses me when someone gets worked up about a film like that and have to say such statements to defend themselves for liking or going to a film that no one else likes.

A lot of it has to do with the person's sensitivity.

If they are real sensitive and you say you thought a movie they liked was crap, to them they instantly think your outright saying they have ****** taste in film and get bitter.

Everyone has different opinions about movies and usually I accept them. But if someone cant even give a decent reason on why a movie was bad thats when I get more defensive. I met someone who said they didnt like TDK because "it was upsetting". I accept the fact that not everyone likes the movie but to say you dont like it because "it was upsetting" then thats bull. I mean if that was upsetting then you can probaly only watch Hannah Montana or something like that. But I nver get overly defensive over a movie over the net

So in short as long as you can give good reason I wont get overly defensive

forum- a public meeting place for open discussion

People usually bring up "This movie sucks" or "This movie rocks" (negatives usually just as offensive as the others are defensive) to get a response, why not follow it up?

The only reason I would have for disapproving of someone disliking a film I liked is if the extent of their critique is "it sucked" or along the lines...

If you don't have a concrete reason as to why you didn't like it, that's when I have an issue.

And to be honest...the whole 'it just didn't appeal to me. I wasn't impressed.' really doesn't work either. Because when someone says that, I just get the impression that they're disapproving of the film either for the sheer sake of it...because they want to look like they're some sort of non-conformist or rebel...or, for some reason, they resent the film's success.

Again...you need to be prepared to back up your claims of 'it sucked' or 'I didn't like it.'

Really no matter what your critique and opinion is, I won't take it as seriously as critiques or opinions that are fleshed out. So flesh them out and you'll be fine.

I can that I'm fairly open minded too. (But I'm also human) But you're right.

i think it has to do with the way people also internalize songs and bands. To many people their tastes in media is treated kind of like part of their identities, they take it very personally.

I Like the movie Hulk (2003), whatcha gonna do about it?

Hand you an invite to come over and watch it with me in HD, as I love it too! :bh:

I don't get too bent out of shape if my film tastes don't match up to someone else's. Each person brings so many personal experiences into viewing a film that you never know what will hit. There are movies I love which I KNOW are just not traditionally looked at as even decent films. :woot:

I think there's many an interesting discussion to be had when there is passionate disagreement about a movie. As long as it doesn't become personal. Really, for every movie I disagree strongly about with someone, I'll bet there's a film that we're lockstep on.

I'll never really understand it though. I don't get all offended when discussing likes and dislikes of food. Heck, sometimes I think we're all more sophisticated about food, we can recognize the contradiction that McDonald's isn't gourmet even while we eat there, than we are about art.

That's a great point. I guess the difference in tone is because we are, for the most part, more emotionally invested in works of art than with food..even though we most likely shovel way more food down our pieholes each day than watch a movie.

Food is food, and it usually serves a basic need without very much emotional attachment tied to it. You get yours, and I get mine. Nom Nom Nom!!! No biggie. :woot:

Welcome to the club....its small but growing  (I feel like a Hulk spokesman...I try to support it in anyway I can :hehe: )

I personally think its ridiculously immature. Im not talking about something like this:
Person A: I saw _____ movie and I think that movie is for ******s!! You must have bad movie taste to watch something like this! What an idiotic movie.

If person A has no reason and acts like that then I can see how someone will get defensive. Im talking about

Person A: I just saw _____ movie. I didn't like it too much, not my favorite. 6/10
Person B: You must like something more like Batman & Robin? Was it too smart for you?

I think thats a bit immature. Not everyone is going to like what you or the critics like. People are not drones (well they shouldn't be)...they have specific movie taste and there are plenty of reasons why a person my like a film thats concidered bad (some are personal too.)

^^^ i have a feeling this thread will turn out like one of my wrestling forum thread, we talk about hating the wwe or hating tna and the way you explained it Sentinel X, someone said it exactly like you did

Exactly, if i find something deeply beautiful then of course you pissing all over said thing would piss me off.

I think that there are many people here who have had characters that they have loved from early childhood and therefore they feel deeply about those characters.

the problem is this, people who don't like the same movies I do are incompetent, illiterate Nimrods with no sense of good taste whatsoever and absolutely stupid :p

weren't we doing this?

I used to be sensitive, & I can still be if I am already having a bad day or just tired of hearing the same complaint. But I have realised that I have my movie, so I don't really care what other people think of it.

yea, same here^^
and i dont care if someone didnt like the Punisher (2004) or Hulk its a movie that i like and no one can change my mind

LOL That's awesome.

I think it's fun to have debates.

Usually I won't get mad if someone likes a movie like "X3". It doesn't matter to me. I'll make of them but that's it.

But if they went in saying absurd crap like "The Dark Knight sucks" or "the prequels are better than the original Star Wars" without backing their stuff up, that's when I get..HULK-like.

Maybe it has to do with movies being one of the longest standing popular media of entertainment. Only music, art, and literature are older than movies, and people don't read books as much as they do movies. Everyone watches movies of some kind though, and that opens the door for a wider area of elitists. If you think about it, there are snobs in every form of entertainment available. It's just that movies are more casual than video games or sports. You can meet a person who doesn't play video games, but you've never met a person that doesn't watch movies. Since everyone is into movies as entertainment, then many are into the elitist critics who get paid to give their opinion. Well chances are that critics will not agree with everything their favorite critics say, and they get defensive when they hear someone else with what the critics disliked about a movie. Music is too broken up into genres to fully be like movies. Musical love is highly racial, so people will only get defensive when talking about music between races, and that rarely happens. With movies though, it's just accepted that critics opinions are "better" than everyone else.

Plus, people are just too damn unaccepting of opinions. It's like some TDK fans are. They're not the only ones, so I don't want them to feel like I'm singling them out. Still, some Dark Knight fans act like you're a bane to existence if you think another comic movie is better than it. Why should anyone care? I liked Spider-man 3, and I don't care if people bash it. I defend it a little, but I still acknowledge their opinion. It's the same thing with other movies like The Godfather, 2001:A Space Odyssey, Taxi Driver, Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc. I think those movies suck, but that's my opinion. Does it really matter that I disagree with what some people call as great movies? People just think too much with a gang mentality. That's probably why they bash you for disliking those movies anyway. They heard soooooooo much about how great the movie was, then they looked for reasons to see it as great when they watched it, and now they're pissed because you formed your own opinion instead of going with the flock. Oh well, I usually drown those people out with music anyway.
