I hated it.
I love the first, and was uneasy about dead mans chest.
I came in with low expectations and an open mind hoping i'd be wrong.
I wasn't.
I found it exceptionally boring, even the action scenes. They had one of the greatest movie characters of all time. Jack Sparrow. And he didn't do or say anything particularly funny or witty the ENTIRE 2 hours and 40 minutes. All he did was
die
Felt like such a waste.
also:
maybe it was just me but i didn't understand 80% of the things that came out of that female witchdoctors mouth
both elizabeth and jack sparrow were extremely out of character at time
Jack abandoning the pearl? please.
and i thought the creatures on Davy Jones ship looked really stupid.
thats all imo though.
Saw it at midnight, and I have to say, best movie of the summer. It's definitley darker than the first. It deals with some adult themes. It basically improves on everything from the origional. Just beautiful to look at. A superb film
While the first film was overly long and only watchable due to a few terrific performances(mainly Depp and Rush; Lee Arenberg and MacKenzie Crook were also quite entertaining as the comic relief, and even more so in this film), this film delivered everything that intended to and then some...and then plenty actually.
This is one of the most purely entertaining popcorn films ever made, and it achieves something that the first film never came close to, epicity.
This movie is funny, exhilerating, visually stunning; Curse of the Black Pearl only had a little bit of the first one (and not as much of it as it tried to have).
This is Zimmer's best score in years. It's been too long since I've heard music like this from him. Much like the films themselves, the score blows away the original going from one thrilling action theme to another with enough heart to enhance the action, and even getting me more invested in the characters emotionally.
The cinematograhy is gorgeous. There are a few memoreable shots from Black Pearl, and there are a few every few minutes in Dead Man's Chest. The way the islands and the ocean are shot does a terrific job of not only some great eye candy, but scope to the film.
Like I said earlier, Depp and Rush are the only reasons I found the first film watchable. Without them it would've been a drawn out bore-fest. This film has one terrific, unique, and quite memoreable performance after another. Bill Nighy as Davy Jones, Stellan Skarsgard as Bootstrap Bill, Naomi Harris as Tia Dalma; all so damn good that they made me feel that they were these characters, even if these characters aren't even human. On top of that, I was indifferent to Elizabeth in the first film, while here I loved her. Her interaction with Jack is vastly more intriuging than the back and forth bickering of the first film, and it paves the way for a great finale that has me longing to see World's End in a way that Curse of the Black Pearl couldn't even come close to doing for my anticipation for Dead Man's Chest.
I loved the religious undertones to Davy Jones crew, and even though he does little in this film, Jones is a terrific villain that had me glued to the screen every time he was on it, well as making me very interested in finding out more about him in World's End. All of them have very distinct, terrific looks that are unlike anything I've ever seen. The special effects work was phenominal. Rarely do I get to see a film with this many different types of creatures that all look so good.
The natives were very unsettling villains that are handled in a way that doesn't take away from their presence, but also doesn't take away from the fun feel of the movie.
I liked Curse of the Black Pearl when I first seen it, but I wasn't thrilled by it and it didn't hold up very well to repeat viewings. Seeing Dead Man's Chest last night at the midnight screening was incredible, I haven't had an experience in a theatre like it since The Return of the King midnight show 3 years ago. The audience was completely into it, cheering and giving a standing ovation at the end and added to the overall enjoyment of the film, an experience which I very rarely have the pleasure of.
The ending couldn't have been more perfect. I absolutely loved Rush as Barbossa, and I felt like standing up and cheering when he showed up in the final shot as a lead in to World's End.
Easily one of the best films of the year(probably second behind The Hills Have Eyes), and it joins the likes of Blade 2 as being a great sequel to a mediocre at best film.
On a side note, there's a very brief, but very entertaining scene after the credits.
i give it an 8. it's a really good movie, definately as good, if not better than the first... but it just feels like it's trying to hard to make you like it.
and again, if it weren't for Depp, this movie would be a 5 or maybe 6 out of 10.
the special effects, especially on davy jones, are second to none.
the story, as a stand alone movie, is more or less forgettable, and i hate what they're doing with the will/jack/elizibeth triangle... but we'll see how it all plays out with the third movie.
Want to hear something funny? As soon as the movie started I got a massive headache and could barely pay attention to the movie. As a result I don't remember ANYTHING except
this movie was ****ing incredible...... there are rarely movies that can deliver like this one did. superman was crap compared to this.everyone in the movie cheered for everything.
and when barbosa wasd revealed everyone clapped.
its a 10/10.... this movie had no flaws. the fx were unbelievable

my thought is the same here....I almost forgot about Jeffrey Rush being in the movie until the very last shot of the movie when he showed up in human form. I jumped up and said OMG that was so sweet. I can't wait for the next one to come rolling out of theaters because there is no way they are going to top this second one. Well with Chow Yun Fat and Keith Richards in it....maybe.
