Superman Returns Rate Brandon Routh's Performance

Its amazing how they were both unknowns and while Routh nailed this heavier 2 part role immediately in a hugeass motion picture, it took Tom 5 years to even get decent in the role of teenage Clark Kent...on a television show. That really pisses me off.

Brandon was prolly the best thing to come out of this movie.

im pretty dissapointed with the movie, besides the special effects...

i really doubt there's is ever gonna be a Superman wax figure with the BRouth likeness...Reeve will be Superman Forever...and Routh could be his 'son' if he hurries and claims child support now that he is well known...

in my opinion ..people need to stop comparing reeve and routh they both did superman well for there generations..sort of like passing the torch thing..and i think brandon achieved that..out wit the old..in with the new..but still have respect for them kind of way..

Brandon has just begun. Give him time. Its not a fair assessment to measure Brandon's popularity in the past 20 hours compared to Reeve's 20 years.

sorry it took awhile guys. here's my review:

Brandon Routh as Clark Kent at the Daily Planet: he played it in such a perfect combination of giddy-geeky no wonder people find it ridiculous for Clark Kent to even be mentioned in the same sentence as Superman. Routh was funny as Clark without being clumsy. sure people bump into him, but his hurmour as Clark was more due to the fly-on-the-wall effect, the big guy who is just plain awkward you dont want to spend too much time being associated with

Brandon Routh as Superman: i will say this, he did a good job, commendable even. but it just wasnt great, it wasnt even Chris Reeve level (which alas he will have to endure the comparisson a little while longer. this should be expected specially now that the movie has just come out). as i have mentioned years before when he was first cast, Routh lacked the powerful PRESENCE that Reeve had as Superman. i wouldnt say he lacked "grace" because Routh does have it plenty, its just very different with what Reeve had. Reeve's Superman had the kind of presence that would make you fall on your knees, Routh's Superman has the kind of presence that would make you want to sit down and talk about life.

however.....

Routh does have a kind of GRAVITAS or a CENTEREDNESS (as Singer puts it) that would be perfect as Kal-El. Kal-El is the combination of Superman and Clark Kent and more. Kal-El is the complete person. it was such shame that the one role that Routh would've excelled in-- the most important role of all-- was left out of the film.

^Sorry, but I think Brandon was EXCELLENT as Supes, and is very comparable to Reeve. I was floored by how good he was actually. It might have been because I really didn't have any expectations, I just went in there with an open mind.........

Brandon is a different kind of Superman than Christopher Reeve was. Reeve was more of a lighthearted Superman than Routh was, i think. Routh did an AMAZING job with the emotional parts of the movie. Reeve did a great job as the Supes for the 80's. Routh did a great job as the Supes for the new millenium. i can't say they're on the same level and i can't say one is better than the other...

Brandon being cast as Supes is about the closest thing to 'fate' as you can get. PERFECT casting by Singer. i still remember seeing Routh's picture for the first time and thinking "he's the best candidate i've seen so far" and that was when Ratner was still attached to the project.

The thing is, NONE of the released pictures did Brandon justice - you have to SEE him in the role. Man, he was fantastic! When he entered the plane after he set it down I was floored when he said "Is everybody alright?" and when he asked Lois if she was okay. Incredible.

I wasn't going to make the comparison like this, but I do agree Routh is the man - Welling is good in his role on TV, but he wouldn't hold a candle to Routh in the actual role - especially after seeing how great Brandon was.

All due respect to Mr. Welling of course - I am NOT putting him down.

Agreed on your first and last points but I disagree with you second one, buddy.

Reeve's presence IMO was that of a genuinely good guy and when you look at him, you wanna be his friend and you trust him.

Routh however has a presence abt him(in this movie) that is otherworldly and I looked at him in a way I didn't see Reeve...in awe.

Routh exudes Post-Crisis Supes.

Can't wait for him to do an "ENOUGH!" scene.

Assessment after 1st viewing...

Clark: B/B-

Supes: A-

Kal-El: A

I thought Brandon was serviceable as Clark. Didn't blow me away, but he did good. I expect he will be better in the proceeding sequels with more experience.

As Supes he was almost perfect. Chris had that certain umph, that certain charisma, that Brandon almost captures but not entirely. Nonetheless, Brandon is definitely Superman and as with his interpretation of Clark, I expect that he will be even better in the proceeding sequels.

Not much to say about his Kal-El cause there wasn't much of it. But that of which I saw was good.

That's exactly how I'd put it. Both Routh and Reeve add their own nuances to the Superman/Clark Kent role. Reeve was more charismatic and a bit jokey whereas Routh is more serious and a bit more reserved but also shows all the right range of emotions when neccessary, especially the scene with Superman and Jason which showed a brand new dynamic and spin to the mythos. Reeve's CK was bumbling and dorky and Routh's was similarly dorky but not overly so since he kept himself hidden well and exactly captures the "fly on the wall" aspect. Routh looked bigger with the new suit which enhances his performance to a more believable stoic visage. It's kind of like Reeve and Routh almost being pre-crisis/post crisis versions of each other in certain ways even though they're supposed to share the same history.

For me, Routh did not surpass Reeve.

I still liked him a lot in the role though and for 2.5 hours he WAS Superman.

About the only thing I didn't like about his Supes was the lack of a deep, commanding voice like Reeve had with "General, would you care to step outside?"

He also didn't quite exude "power" like Reeve did when he busted down the door to Luthor's lair in STM. The scene where he walks into the plane could've been so much more, up to that level Reeve did when he walked into Luthor's lair.

That said, those are only nitpicks. Aside from those, I thought Routh kicked supremo ass as Clark/Supes. And he definitely could've had more lines as both personas! The writers need to give him more dialog in the next film!
