I've had Agatha Christie's The Clocks sitting in my bedroom for months, and I'm still only 30-something pages into it. I've had Stephen King's The Gunslinger sitting in my car for almost two weeks, and I'm almost done. It turns out I usually finish my novels In my car. Whenever I keep a book in my car, I usually manage to read through a few pages right before I go somewhere or while I'm waiting for something/someone. Those seconds to minutes where I'm in my car and not driving are the only time I'm not easily distracted. Otherwise if I'm at home, I've got video games, TV, and the internet to catch my attention.

Does anyone else need any special conditions or to be in a certain mood while they're reading?

I need it to be absolutely silent, otherwise I'm distracted to easily.

i tried reading steven king once, but i quickly wondered "why the hell is this guy so popular?!". but i DO love westerns! which leaves me curious if i should check out gunslinger.

If I do read in a car, it's when I'm a passenger. But as long there's enough light to read, I can read anywhere.

As for music, when I do have music playing it's usually instrumentals, be it either from my collection (CD or mp3), NPR or U92

I can only read when baby sitting, watching the dog, or generally when I'm out somewhere I don't want to be. If I'm at home with nothing to do, I have way too many distractions sitting around to challenge any book short of immediately captavating.

The Gunslinger doesn't really feel like a western. It doesn't even feel like it's part of the horror genre. It's one long ass prelude and its ending left me disappointed.

See, I can't read when a car is in motion. I tried that when I was a kid, and it always got me carsick. Handheld video games do the same. I pretty much learned to love watching passing scenery on road trips.

I've never got motion sickness. But I didn't read all the time in cars. Just when I was reading a book.

Another thing I forgot was back in college, I would read a book for personal enjoyment alongside the book(s) I had to read for class. This way I didn't get burnt out from forced reading.

Apparently I read really fast on an elliptical. I can get through 40 pages in 45 minutes on one of those. I read Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne, a 400 page book, in half the time it used to take me.
I also read while I'm in the bathroom...

Bathroom reading is always enjoyable. However, toilet seats have to be more comfortable.

I would definitely buy a toilet/recliner.

I read just about anything just about anywhere, so I always carry a book and a magazine with me

I do most of my reading while commuting, it's easy for me to zone out of the surrounding noise and just get in there.

also when waiting for my class to start, if I'd prepared my class beforehand, or waiting for my wife to leave work

most of the reading I do at home is done usually after doing housework, as a reward, and since we always have half read books in all the rooms of the house, it's nice to just sit down with a cup of tea and read a chapter or two

right now I have Anansi Boys in the bedroom, The Language Instinct and Contact in the living room (Although I think the wife took the former to read at work, need to check on that) and several others around there

I took my car to the dealership to get checked out today. That two-hour wait flew by with a book in hand.

Reading while your car is in the shop is fun, until you get the bill.

Eh. Regular maintenance with the dealership is already calculated into my car note.

when i know in advance i'll be working the desk at work, i try to bring a small read

i like to read when im traveling, but ironically, i usually do it with headphones on

i read about 75 pgs of the Green Mile while waiting in the courthouse the other day

I can really only read before bed. I'll read for around an hour and it helps me to go to sleep. I found I really can't focus enough to read any other time.

I prefer to read on a Saturday or Sunday morning or afternoon, at home alone, on the couch, with plenty of natural light. On weeknights, I get a fair amount of reading done while sitting on the toilet. I also visit the local library every now and then, and I usually stay and read for at least an hour. When I'm in the car by myself and waiting for someone or something, I might read some comics or a newspaper while listening to podcasts.

I get most of my reading done during commercials while I'm watching TV.

I read that, many years ago, and it's well worth finishing. A good book.

:xmen:

I need to have background noise. Like I have to have music going or something. I can't read if it is quiet.
