I can't speak highly of Mantlo and David enough, because as much as I might love Stan and Jack....to me they're Hulk's real parents.

I just wanted a straight forward Hulk story. An experiment goes wrong and turns a guy into a monster. Didn't need the abusive childhood storyline for me.

Eh... For me that's the Hulk from the 80's and 90's I grew up with. That's the origin of the Hulk for dude's like me and Roose. Banner was broken before the gamma rays mutated his DNA. It's a better and more holistic explanation about where the Hulk personality comes from in my view.

Now... I probably disagree with Roose that the Ang Lee film really did justice to that story and aspect of the character. I honestly like Sam as General Ross and that desert Hulk sequence and... that's about it.

Oh... And I do genuinely like the the "comic book panel" effect. Everything else though... Let's just say I actually find the Norton film a big improvement in many, many ways.

This **** is golden baby!

I loved the Norton Hulk movie.

I thought Sam Elliott was great as Ross in the Ang Lee movie. I liked the comic panels usage. I normally like Bana, but didn't like him too much in it. I absolutely hated Nolte in it. The action scenes were good except for the dog attack being too dark and murky, as well as the absorbing man fight at the end. My wife watched the theatrical version once....and said she would never watch it again. I did my fan edit (cutting it down to 1 hour 8 minutes) and she has watched that several times with me.

I don't care for either Hulk movie. The Norton one was more entertaining but generally mediocre and forgettable, and the Ang Lee one had more sequences I admired (while a lot of stuff I didn't). I hadn't read any Hulk comics and based on those two movies, I thought I just didn't care for the Hulk as a character in general, but Ruffalo and Avengers turned that around. Still not sure if I'd enjoy another Hulk solo movie, though. The central conceit feels a bit played out to me. It would have to go beyond the basic "on the run from the government" premise and do something crazy like World War Hulk or something to catch my interest.

Have you ever read either the Mantlo or David runs flick?

I distinctly recall Hulk punches one of those mutant dogs in the nads. Ang's a weird fella.

Fingers crossed that since they're not doing a Strange sequel that they do a version of the Crossroads with those characters. Get real freaky with it.

Nah, I've never gotten into Hulk comics at all. I did read Planet Hulk and World War Hulk because I was impressed with Greg Pak's Action Comics run and knew he cut his teeth at Marvel so I picked those up. And I did enjoy them, but for some reason never had the urge to read more. I think because the whole Jekyll/Hyde thing has never appealed to me in any form, and those were fun because they pretty much ditched that for a bit, lol.

So disappointed they wasted the DEFENDERS name on the Netflix show.

Imagine a post A4 film with Cumberbatch's Strange, Mark's Banner/Hulk, Thompson's Valkyrie, and just pulling these two castings out of my ass right now... John Lee Miller's as the Silver Surfer and Pedro Pascal as Namor?

I could die.

I know I've said it before to you probably but... You simply MUST pick it up some time. It's some of the best mainstream comic book writing and character development of the past 40 years... I **** YOU NOT. :woot:

I also recommend David's CAPT. MARVEL run as well.

Hmm... How about this...?

Give the two part (and it has to be found in collected form at some point) FUTURE IMPERFECT a shot. It's pretty self contained. It's from the "merged Hulk" era of David's run and it's got spectacular art by George Perez. It really gives the flavor of David's run but in a story that is short and to the point. BONUS: You get to read Rick Jones as written by the best Marvel scribe to ever handle him.

Oh now I see your hidden agenda: Rick Jones. :cwink:

Thanks for the recs. Since I recently found a place to read all this older stuff online, I shall give it a shot.

It’d be entirely my kind of scene. Cooky, cosmic and weird...basically it’s what I’ve been hungry for since Ragnarok.

Wait, they're not doing a Strange sequel?

Cumberbatch said a while ago that as far as he’s aware the Strsnge sequel isn’t on the immediate agenda for marvel. Whether that means it’s not happening period or if they’re just pushing it back to the end of phase 4, I’m not really sure.

I just kinda figured he was giving the default "I don't know" until Phase 4 is announced.

Hulk talk is a great kind of talk. I love Bill Mantlo's work, I adore most of what Peter David's run, and I really really like the John Byrne + Al Milgrom stuff between those two runs.

I really like the Paul Jenkins era too.

I will always like the John Byrne Doc Sampson design.

This got me into the character

And encouraged me to watch the live action TV show that really knew how to make the character work for the special effects of those days.

It's funny how Kenneth Johnson did not want to use the double alliteration name of Bruce Banner cause the concept felt too comic booky, but he really wanted a guy with the initials BB to star in his show.

It's a neat outfit.

Is that from the issue where Iron Man (Silver Centurion Armor), Namor, Wonder Man and Hercules take on a Savage Hulk that's been physically split from Banner? Or is it from the issue before? While not crazy about Byrne's story (such as it was, he got off the book pretty quickly) I adored that era of his art.

I think this might be from the time the Doc knocked Hulk unconscious before the split.

When Banner inside Hulk causes Hulk to see all his past enemies like Rhino, Abomination, Juggernaut ect. and Samson gets in the sucker punch, right?

Yeah... Great looking stuff.

See... I can remember this BS from off the top of my head but all my High School chemistry and algebra? Totally gone from the system.
