Really disappointed with want DC are doing with Batman

Oh no you didn't...

Yeah I suppose, his work is good, and the fans love it obviously, but like I said... He needs some sort of inner mechanism that makes him say 'no, sorry, I have enough work already.'

Still an amazing artist though!

Detective is only good when Dini is writing, (which is thankfully often) Batman is consistently lame, as is B&R.
Detective has been one of the most solid books since the one-year gap. Batman is, while maybe not the dark, gruff, detective Batman we all love to read about in the old late-70s and late-80s issues, a DAMN solid Morrison narrative. ASBAR is good for what it is: a failed attempt by Miller to write yet another take on Dark Knight Returns, turned into a self-parody.

What multiverse BS? And the current crossover is kicking ass, man! Are you really giving it a chance, or are you just writing it off as one more ****ty Bat-over?

The Joker origin in Confidential is completely and unadulteratedly ****ty, but the arc before it was pretty solid, if not amazing, and i hope that after Joker origin is over, it will go back to being readable.
Edited for correctitude.

No one seems to be doing anything new in Batman though. Last time i truely enjoyed reading Batman was in the NML days.
Batman as graffiti artist? Bruce "Screw you, JLA, with your ability to rebuild this city in a matter of weeks, get the **** outta my town" Wayne? The story that caused Alan Grant to leave DC Comics forever?

I am a Batfan first and foremost, but I roundly disagree with you, man. Like, everything you said, pretty much.

Bats having a son is new.
No, not really.

each is definitly moving Batman in new directions too. you can't say that nothing new happening at all
But are those new directions GOOD? That's the question that has to be asked. As I've said, I like them all right now, but it also must be admitted that the Bat-comic world isn't what it has been at times in the past. Of course, it rarely is. You have AMAZING spots, and you have pretty-good spots. Occasionally, you have ****ty spots.

There should be only ONE Batman book. That way there will be a concentration of good writing.
Nah, there was a time when Batman, Detective, Legends, and Shadow were all top-notch ****.

Hmmm... I dunno, I think that we need a few less books, get rid of All-Star, it's just not going anywhere. They really need some new writers though.

Getting rid of All-Star is a ******ed idea...once Miller is done with his run (most likely 12 issues) a new writer will come on with a new story totally unrelated to Millers. Why destroy the whole book just because you dont like one arc of it?

yes lets get rid of the number one selling Batman title . I'll hazard a guess that it's in the top 3 of entire company. Wild guess, i don't follow sales but I know a hell of a lot of people are buying ASBR

No, not really.

The original poster said nothing was happening and i was merely saying that's clearly not true. But yeah I agree that the whole comics industry works in phases, good times and rough patches.....but in 15 years of following comics I've never bought so many bat comics at one time as I do now. So yeah to answer your question I do think the directions are good. Very good :D :batty:

LOVE Dini's run on detective...

Everything else is crap or at least uninspriring - they just appear to not be trying anymore.

I mean, its expected with an icon which runs for nearly 70 years in continuous print but still... DC need to stop everything and take a good look at themselves.

Let Paul Dini run the company i say... cause i don't have much faith in the others right now

A shakeup is needed. Something new. A new uber villain maybe. Maybe Wayne could somehow lose his money.
Which would create a Bond-like situation where Batman had to rely on himself and not his gadgets, car or cave etc..

I have to disagree. Batman comics are in a really good place right now, better than they have been for years. We have four VERY solid books running concurrently. All-Star, Dini's Detective, Morrisons Batman and Joker's Confidential. Just one of these books on there own would be enough to be grateful for. instead we've got four.

each is definitly moving Batman in new directions too. you can't say that nothing new happening at all

^ have you read Batman & son? It sounds like you have not. It's not about being another side-kick (well that's what Damien was thinking about, but it isn;t the purpose of introducing him the story). It's about Batman - who has a plan for eveything - not being able to control of something that should be closest to him. his own son and heir.

I HATE Morrison. He a freak that is making Batman into a joke. Imagine if Nolan had read this crap and not the 70's run.

Well it does seem that instead of making a great Batman book, DC are only ADDING to the books what with confidential and all.

All the tallent seems to be jumping ship to Marvel.

Yeah it may have good sales, but it's doing nothing. Maybe with a new writer it'll get better, but IMO its just not for me. Detective on the hand, with Dinni, that's some good work right there. I get the feeling that it's building towards something big.

How much longer is Dini going to be doing it? I hope its a while because Detective is the best batman book by far.

Ditto that, he's the best guy they've had in a while and i'm really enjoying his work at the moment.

Already tried that. Batman beat it. Besides, Bond ALWAYS relies on those things.

arent they planning on killing Batman? maybe thata will shake things up, even tho i hope its not true. I hate when characters get killed off

I'm glad with that, it's ridiculous to kill him off, because we all know they'd just bring him back, so what's the point?

I read DETECTIVE, BATMAN, CONFIDENTIAL, and B&R:TBW regualarly.

Detective is only good when Dini is writing, (which is thankfully often) Batman is consistently lame, as is B&R.

And above all, i hate the crossovers and multiverse BS.:o

The Joker origin in Confidential is great, but the arc before it was terrible, and i fear that after Joker origin is over, it will go back to being terrible.

No one seems to be doing anything new in Batman though. Last time i truely enjoyed reading Batman was in the NML days.

I know many won't agree with me, but i just need to vent a long standing bile thats been buggling beneath the surface for a few years now.:csad:

Try Gotham: Underground, and Batman And The Outsiders.

Both are excellent. :brucebat:

While I'm currently (as usually) enjoying all the Bat-titles, Gotham Underground is the one that makes me realize how good Batman books can really be. Takes me right back in the day, you know? Spoiler and Azrael on the way back, the Gotham mobs back in a big way that doesn't involve War Games, Robin acting like Robin, Gotham acting like Gotham, Batman acting like Batman, intrigue, danger, suspense...it's delicious.

Hmm, I think he has a point, I heard several rumours on different sites that DC were thinking of this, but decided against it 'cause all the fans realized what a cheap trick it was along with the fact that killing there biggest draw just before the new movie was suicide.

I'm sure I read that rumour at least twice, possibly more...

Just saying...

I didn't feel like starting a new thread, but here's Wizard's 2008 Batman Preview:
2008 PREVIEW: BATMAN

Super-scribes Paul Dini and Grant Morrison open up their ’08 case files on the mysteries, villains and women hitting Gotham’s pair of Batman monthlies
THE MISSION STATEMENT
DETECTIVE COMICS “I want to still do self-contained stories, but there is going to be a character continuity that runs through,” Dini says. “While the villain may not continue from issue to issue, there are recurring character beats that will.”
BATMAN “We’re trying to explore the weaknesses in Batman that people may exploit so it opens him up to story potential we haven’t seen before,” Morrison explains of his year of psychological stories starring the Dark Knight.
THE VILLAINS
DETECTIVE COMICS February sees the return of Scarface and his bombshell ventriloquist Sugar. “You’ll find out who she is, where she came from and why Scarface means so much to her,” promises Dini. “And Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee are going to be the new crime bosses of Gotham.”
BATMAN “We’re actually doing the Club of Villains that was hinted at but people didn’t actually get to see,” promises Morrison. “For me the big thing is to get to do the Joker again. I set him up to be really spooky and badass this time, so I’m looking forward to bringing him back.”
THE LADIES IN BATMAN’S LIFE
DETECTIVE COMICS “Zatanna’s on her way back,” says Dini. “I think she’s going to continue in the series as a semi-supporting character, and then it will get a little more…complicated. Their relationship is in for a surprise twist.”
BATMAN Expect Bruce Wayne’s love life to cross his alter ego’s adventures with the return of Morrison’s own bombshell. “We’re kind of playing this romance story with Jezebel Jet, the supermodel girl that Batman’s been going out with for a while.”
ODDEST ADVENTURE
DETECTIVE COMICS After an exploding Batmobile leaves the Dark Knight Detective stranded, the hero eyes a department store suit worth stealing. “We cut to Bruce Wayne in a cab with a suitcase from the window display going home. All he wants is a moment of sleep, but the cab driver won’t let him alone,” laughs Dini. “To me it’s not a Batman story unless it’s also a Bruce Wayne story.”
BATMAN Later in the year, Morrison puts his twist on 1963’s Batman issue #156. “It’s building off of that story ‘Robin Dies at Dawn,’” he reveals. “I thought there was basically a really cool story to be told about the fact that Batman underwent this [space isolation] experiment, which turned him insane for a couple of weeks and has been forgotten in history.”

Some potentially cool stuff there. I haven't been a big fan of Morrison's run, but a Joker storyline could kick ass. (Hopefully it won't be in prose again, though. One issue like #663 was enough for me).

As for Detective: Batman hooking up with Zatanna? Am I reading that right? That could be interesting, too. And then we'd have two non-powered heroes banging hot chicks in fishnets.

I thought he hated Zatanna for the whole mind-wipe thing?

In Under The Hood he slates her pretty bad.

The whole I wanted someone I could trust but had to settle on you thing...

They buried the hatchet in Detective Comics earlier this year (#833 and 834). Dini also added the fact that Bruce met Zatanna when they were both young. 833 is great read, by the way. I highly recommend it.

Oh ok wicked, i'll check that out and try and pick it up! Is it in the collected TPB Detective?
