Iron Man Sequels Recast Tony Stark

The fact that this thread is titled "Recast RDJ" is enough proof that Tony Stark shouldn't be recast.

Agreed. Although it's obviously a hypothetical scenario. I'm also under the impression that he should not be doing this past age 60. Therefore I'd prefer a recast to a reboot. In which case one of the aforementioned actors might do okay. I'm not a fan of Nolan's "one-trilogy and done" mindset when it comes to comic book movies. I like going to see Iron Man in theaters so I hope they keep it up for as long as the creative juices continue flowing.

I think it's a dreadful idea to try and get the next actor to match Robert Downey Jnr. Robert Downey Jnr played Iron Man. He isn't Iron Man. Iron Man existed long before RDJ's performance.

RDJ was fantastic as Iron Man but that's because he got to play him the way he wanted to play him. If you try to get an actor to play RDJ playing Tony Stark playing Iron Man you end up with something like this...

Well now, that is a reasonable mindset. I for one didn't quite understand why RDJ was cast as Stark in the first place. Thats not to say I was opposed, just didnt quite understand. Okay then, so assuming its just a brand new Stark casting, who should it be?

I for one, still like the previous three recommendations.

Charlie Sheen

With some nod to Sheen in the movie.

*Reporter trying to ask a question to Stark*

Reporter- Is it true that you had some plastic surgery?"

And this Iron Man poster in the background with "WINNING" at the bottom

That idea is just stupid and ludicrous enough to be brilliant...

in all seriousness though even though he has the drug background I think the actor should idealy have, I'm not sure thats Sheen's background yet unfortunately :/

I don't think Brandon Routh was awful I think Singer just didn't get the character...smh ruined two movies with one stroke

^ he wasn't necessarily implying that he was awful in the role, just that he was trying to hard to be like Reeve's superman, instead of just playing superman

ohhh got it! in that case I agree. by the way that facepalm was to singer ruining both films not his comment haha

Marvel should never replace RDJ's Tony Stark. But eventually they will bring in a new Iron Man. One idea is to have the replacement Iron Man be the genius son Tony never knew about, the result of one of his many prior flings now grown to adulthood. That could make for a good final Iron Man movie - the son putting on the armor to avenging the death of the father he never really knew.

I hope RDJ goes on to do 4 more IM movies as far as I'm concerned. BUT, if and when the time comes to recast the role, I've always said that I think Josh Brolin would be a solid choice for the part, he has the Tony Stark look, and in my opinion his acting chops are up to snuff.

One of the worst ideas for a comic movie I've seen on the boards in a while. :csad:

So you would recast RDJ with an actor who's only 3 years younger?

Had no idea Brolin was only 3 yrs younger than RDJ. Scrap that idea. LOL

I'm honored that my innocuous half-idea made your all-time worst list. In all seriousness, what the MCU has done extremely well is to show, like DC did in comics prior to the new 52, the relationships of heroes from one generation to the next. I think it would be interesting to see RDJ's Stark interact with an adult son and potential succesor.

He was being serious going by his response.

To be clear, I do not want to see an adorable moppet put on a pint-sized version of the Iron Man suit in a future installment. I do think, however, that introducing a grown son, perhaps initially as an adversary, could be interesting if Marvel continues to make IM sequels. Bottom line, I hope RDJ continues as Tony Stark in the MCU for phase two through seven or so.

Not to nitpick, but shouldn't the title of this thread be Recast TONY STARK?

Exactly. Thats the point of the thread. In other words, Downey has made quite an impression on audiences, for better or worse. Hypothetically if the MCU continues indefinitely, they might want to bridge the gap between RDJ Tony Stark and 616 Tony Stark by casting someone with a similar kind of swagger. So what do you think?

Excellent response, and choice. I think the 'why is he all of a sudden younger' might be an issue, but overall, he's one guy who can go toe to toe with any actor and make Tony Stark charming as heck.
