EXCLUSIVE: ‘Iron Man 2’ Black Widow, Tony Stark & Pepper Potts Love Triangle Confirmed

Published by Silas Lesnick on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 9:41 am.

During a recent press junket for April 24th’s “The Soloist,” actor Robert Downey Jr. confirmed with MTV News what comics fans had long been expecting: Tony Stark will indeed have two lovely ladies vying for his attention in “Iron Man 2”.

Of course, Gwenyth Paltrow is set to return as assistant/love interest Pepper Potts, but the sequel will also see the addition of Scarlett Johansson as Russian agent Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow.

When asked whether he’d be 1/3 of a love triangle in the film, Downey told MTV News, “Heck yeah, Wouldn’t you?”

Still unconfirmed is exactly which iteration of the Black Widow will be making her appearance in the film. The original version was a Russian spy who, after defecting, ended up joining the Avengers. In Marvel’s Ultimate universe, however, the Black Widow nearly married Tony Stark before revealing herself as a traitor.

Regardless of whether she’ll wind up good or evil, it’s likely that the character’s first appearance (1964’s “Tales of Supense” #52) will be a major part of the on-screen backstory as it deals with an assassination attempt on Stark, as orchestrated by rumored “Iron Man 2″ villain Crimson Dynamo, a character whose possible appearance in the film is still being connected with Mickey Rourke, despite some claims by Downey to the contrary.

Very cool, they can go either way with BW origins, but both have Stark and Widow romanatically involved at some point.

Hmmm. Sounds formulaic and would probably end up like the predictable spiderman 2.

Well, that guarantees the angle most of the media will play up to appeal to the females.

Well at least this time there is 2 women rather than the other way around in spiderman 2. :D RDJ is so flucky to have scarjo and gweltrow.

Considering 2 was the best one... what's the problem?

And if someone else were using a direct story from the comics you'd prolly say, "Oooh, how faithful to the comics!"

Quit yer *****in'

:thing: :doom: :thing:

....

You do realize that this hasnt been done, right? a comic flick where the hero is at the center of a love triangle, and not the love interest??

Man I thought Happy Hogan was going to be part of the love triangle... hopefully they save that for IM3.

Anyone else worried that RDJ's Stark is going to come off as a creepy old guy that likes "jailbait" what with the nearly 20 year age gap between him and Scarlett?

I mean this film's version of Black Widow is being played by an actress that looks young enough to be pass as Pepper's daughter.

Not really. Black Widow was in her 20's in the books when she and Tony did the deed.

Not really. Stark passes for a mid to late thirty something to me while BW will probably look mid to late twenty something.

Not to mention Stark looks like a dashing playboy in his prime. It's not a baffling visual to see him with hot young ass. :hehe:

I was hoping any possible Pepper/Tony relationship was dealt with in the first movie. I much prefer seeing Pepper as a strong female character in her own right rather than being a "love interest" for Tony. I thought their dynamic in the first film was excellent and I was very pleased that the near-kiss didn't happen (at least in the version of the scene used in the film).

Still, as long as they don't turn Pepper into some kind of a jealous harpy, then I'm happy to see a Tony/Natasha romance (and fully expected that to happen with the inclusion of Black Widow). Also hoping that we might see some Pepper/Happy sparks start to fly and perhaps see the romantic progression of their relationship in IM3.

Cheers.

I don't think its as bad as pairing up Anne Hathaway and Steve Carrell in Get Smart.

Who cares if it's a May / December love affair? They are both adults right?

Yeesh. You kids are really showing your age. :D
